Perceiving politicians as true to themselves: Development and validation of the perceived political authenticity scale.

ABSTRACT: The authenticity of political candidates receives increasing attention in political and academic discourse. Although being perceived as authentic is seen as a success factor in contemporary political communication, little attention has been paid to how citizens evaluate politicians' authenticity. The state of research thus lacks a valid instrument to measure citizens' perceptions of politicians' authenticity. This article addresses this gap in the literature and proposes a new multidimensional scale of perceived political authenticity. We conducted three consecutive studies to test the instrument's composition, performance, and validity and present a final 12-item scale. Results from an expert panel and two online quota surveys (Sample 1: N = 556, Sample 2: N = 1,210) show that citizens rely on three political authenticity dimensions to judge politicians' authenticity: ordinariness, consistency, and immediacy. Factor analyses were used to establish construct validity and demonstrate that the new scale is a robust and reliable measure. Finally, we find that higher perceived political authenticity for specific politicians is positively associated with party identification and the intention to vote for politicians.

Project description:ObjectiveWhile ample research links health beliefs to physical health in both healthy and clinical populations, the specific health beliefs that drive this effect remain underexplored. Addressing this gap is critical for mechanistic examinations and targeted intervention development. Building on previous work, this study aimed to assess subjective beliefs about immune system efficacy and develop a novel Perceived Immunity scale.MethodsAcross three studies (total N = 378; Study 1: N = 206 healthy; Study 2: N = 132 healthy and N = 40 with immune-related diseases; and Study 3: subset of N = 87 from Study 2), we examine Perceived Immunity scale's validity, reliability, and association with everyday physical health.ResultsPerceived immunity demonstrated excellent internal consistency (Cronbach alpha = 0.9), strong construct validity (all items were loaded onto one factor) and structural validity, including convergence validity with scales assessing subjective health perceptions, and discriminant validity from scales measuring external health control. These findings were replicated across different cohorts. Furthermore, regression analyses revealed significant correlations with daily physical health measures, specifically somatic symptoms, across cohorts (all β > -0.347, all p < .001) and sick leave days (all β = -0.174, all p < .045). These associations were stronger in individuals with immune-related conditions. Finally, Perceived Immunity exhibited good test-retest reliability (interclass correlation coefficient = 0.74) and prospectively predicted somatic symptoms over time (β = -0.324, p = .002), with significant results observed up to 1 year.ConclusionsThe Perceived Immunity scale offers a valuable tool for researchers and health care providers, providing insights into the interplay between specific health beliefs and daily health. Furthermore, its validation lays the groundwork for targeted interventions that explore how health perceptions may directly influence actual physical experiences.

Project description:ObjectivesEstablish reliability, concurrent and convergent validity of the Pittsburgh Fatigability Scale (PFS) Mental subscale.DesignCross-sectional.SettingOlder adults from two University of Pittsburgh registries, Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA), and Long Life Family Study (LLFS).ParticipantsPFS Mental subscale validation was conducted using three cohorts: (1) Development Sample (N = 664, 59.1% women, age 74.8 ± 6.4 years, PFS Mental scores 10.3 ± 9.1), (2) Validation Sample I-BLSA (N = 430, 51.9% women, age 74.5 ± 8.2 years, PFS Mental scores 9.4 ± 7.9), and (3) Validation Sample II-LLFS (N = 1,917, 54.5% women, age 72.2 ± 9.3 years, PFS Mental scores 7.5 ± 8.2).MeasurementsDevelopment Sample, Validation Sample I-BLSA, and Validation Sample II-LLFS participants self-administered the 10-item Pittsburgh Fatigability Scale. Validation Sample II-LLFS completed cognition measures (Trail Making Tests A and B), depressive symptomatology (Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale, CES-D), and global fatigue from two CES-D items.ResultsIn the Development Sample and Validation Sample I-BLSA, confirmatory factor analysis showed all 10 items loaded on two factors: social and physical activities (fit indices: SRMSR = 0.064, RMSEA = 0.095, CFI = 0.91). PFS Mental scores had strong internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.85) and good test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.78). Validation Sample II-LLFS PFS Mental scores demonstrated moderate concurrent and construct validity using Pearson (r) or Spearman (ρ) correlations against measures of cognition (Trail Making Tests A (r = 0.14) and B (r = 0.17) time), depressive symptoms (r = 0.31), and global fatigue (ρ = 0.21). Additionally, the PFS Mental subscale had strong convergent validity, discriminating according to established clinical or cognitive testing cut points, with differences in PFS Mental scores ranging from 3.9 to 7.6 points (all P < .001). All analyses were adjusted for family relatedness, field center, age, sex, and education.ConclusionsThe validated PFS Mental subscale may be used in clinical and research settings as a sensitive, one-page self-administered tool of perceived mental fatigability in older adults.
