Lithocarpusdahuensis (Fagaceae), a new species from Fujian Province based on morphology and genomic data.

ABSTRACT: Lithocarpusdahuensis, a new Fagaceae species from Fujian Province, China, is described and illustrated. The new species is morphologically similar to L.konishii, but its oblanceolate leaf blade has more pairs of acute teeth on the margin, denser lateral veins, smaller cupules enclosing up to 1/4-1/3 of the nut, and its nut is only half as long as those of L.konishii. The plastome of L.dahuensis was 161,303 bp in length and displayed the typical quadripartite structure. Phylogenetic analyses distinguished L.dahuensis from L.konishii with strong support based on whole plastome and nrITS, respectively.

Project description:Danxiaorchismangdangshanensis, a new mycoheterotrophic species from Fujian Province, China, is described and illustrated. The new species is morphologically similar to D.singchiana, but its callus of labellum is a less distinctive Y-shape with three auricles on the apex, four pollinia that are narrowly elliptic in shape and equal in size, and it lacks fine roots. The plastome of D.mangdangshanensis is highly degraded. Phylogenetic analyses distinguished D.mangdangshanensis from its congeners, D.singchiana and D.yangii, with strong support based on nrITS + matK and plastomes, respectively.

Lithocarpus dahuoaiensis (Fagaceae), a new species from Lam Dong Province, Vietnam.

Project description:Lithocarpus dahuoaiensis Ngoc & L. V. Dung, a new species from the Central highland of Vietnam, is described and illustrated. The new species is morphologically similar to Lithocarpus macphailii (M. R. Hend.) Barnett or Lithocarpus encleisocarpus (Korth.) A. Camus in having completely entire leaf margin, solitary cupule, long stalks of fruits, deeply cup-shaped or turbinate cupules, with a number of horizontal filiform lines. The species differs in its nut enclosure ca. 1/2 - 2/3 of the nut, adaxially glabrous leaf blades, secondary veins 11-12 pairs and faintly to very faintly visible hairs on the outside of the cupule. A table showing the morphological comparison of Lithocarpus dahuoaiensis with Lithocarpus macphailii and Lithocarpus encleisocarpus is also provided.

Lithocarpus orbicarpus (Fagaceae), a new species of Stone Oak from Phang Nga province, Thailand.

Project description:A new species is described, Lithocarpus orbicarpus Strijk, collected from Ton Pariwat Wildlife Sanctuary, Mueang district, Phang Nga Province in the Peninsular Floristic Region of Thailand. We provide the first technical illustrations and colour photographs of the new species, as well as a description of its conservation status and the collecting locality. The species can be easily distinguished by its unique orbicular acorns, each covered with a dense pattern of irregularly placed scales, which completely conceal the nut, except for a tiny apical pore, and which are arranged in a dense cluster on an erect woody spike. We also provide an amendment to the existing diagnostic key to Lithocarpus, and discuss important differences with morphologically similar species found in Thailand and the surrounding region.

Polypleurumchinense (Podostemaceae), a new species from Fujian, China, based on morphological and genomic evidence.

Project description:We describe Polypleurumchinense, a new species of Podostemaceae from Yunxiao County, Fujian Province, China, based on morphological and molecular data and the genus Polypleurum is recorded here for the first time from China. Polypleurumchinense has a gross morphology similar to P.longistylosum, but it can be distinguished from the latter by its narrower roots, more numerous and longer leaves, shorter stigmas and more numerous ovules per locule. To distinguish the new Polypleurum species and study its phylogenetic position, its complete plastome was sequenced and characterised. The plastome is 132,110 bp in length, including a pair of inverted repeat regions (IRs) of 20,389 bp divided by the large single-copy (LSC) and small single-copy (SSC) regions of 79,022 bp and 12,310 bp, respectively. The plastome size of P.chinense is relatively smaller compared to most angiosperms due to the absence of the ycf1 and ycf2 genes in the IR regions. The phylogenetic analyses also strongly support the separation of the new species from other taxa.

Quercusmangdenensis, a new species of Quercus (Fagaceae) from Kon Tum Province, Vietnam.

Project description:Quercusmangdenensis Binh & Ngoc, sp. nov. (Fagaceae) is newly described from Mang Den Town in the central highland of Vietnam. The new species is characterized by lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate leaves with entire margin, 1-5-fruited infructescence, larger fruit size 6-10.5 cm long, broadly bowl-shaped cupules enclosing 1/5 of the nut, bracts of cupule entire and arranged in 5-7 rings, and cylindrical-ellipsoid and basally flat nuts 4.5-7.5 cm long. Quercusmangdenensis is morphologically similar to Q.bidoupensis Binh & Ngoc and Q.kontumensis A.Camus in having similar leaf shape, cuneate leaf base, and bracts arrangement in cupules. However, it differs from Q.bidoupensis and Q.kontumensis by cupules broadly bowl-shaped, much larger fruits, cylindrical-ellipsoid nut shape, and cupule enclosing 1/5 of the nuts. A description, photographs, and preliminary species conservation status of the new species are also provided.

Morphological and phylogenetic analyzes reveal two new species of Melanconiella from Fujian Province, China.

Project description:IntroductionSpecies of Melanconiella include a diverse array of plant pathogens as well as endophytic fungi. Members of this genus have been frequently collected from the family Betulaceae (birches) in Europe and North America. Little, however, if known concerning the distribution of Melanconiella and/or their potential as pathogens of other plant hosts.MethodsFungi were noted and isolated from diseased leaves of Loropetalum chinense (Chinese fringe flower) and Camellia sinensis (tea) in Fujian Province, China. Genomic DNA was extracted from fungal isolates and the nucleotide sequences of four loci were determined and sued to construct phylogenetic trees. Morphological characteristics of fungal structures were determined via microscopic analyses.ResultsFour strains and two new species of Melanconiella were isolated from infected leaves of L. chinense and C. sinensis in Fujian Province, China. Based on morphology and a multi-gene phylogeny of the internal transcribed spacer regions with the intervening 5.8S nrRNA gene (ITS), the 28S large subunit of nuclear ribosomal RNA (LSU), the second largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (RPB2), and the translation elongation factor 1-α gene (TEF1-α), Melanconiellaloropetali sp. nov. and Melanconiellacamelliae sp. nov. were identified and described herein. Detailed descriptions, illustrations, and a key to the known species of Melanconiella are provided.DiscussionThese data identify new species of Melanconiella, expanding the potential range and distribution of these dark septate fungi. The developed keys provide a reference source for further characterization of these fungi.

A new species of the genus Rana sensu lato Linnaeus, 1758 (Anura, Ranidae) from Wuyi Mountain, Fujian Province, China.

Project description:A new species of the frog genus Rana sensu lato from Wuyi Mountain, Fujian Province, China is described. Molecular phylogenetic analyses clustered the new species into the R.johnsi group and indicated that it was genetically divergent from its closely related species. The new species could be distinguished from its congeners by a combination of the following characters: body size medium, SVL 41.4-45.6 mm (42.9 ± 1.9 mm, n = 4) in adult males and 47.6-50.3 mm (n = 2) in adult females; adult male with a pair of internal subgular vocal sacs; lateroventral grooves present on tip of toes; webbing on fourth toes reaching the tip of toe; transverse skin ridges distinctly present on the dorsal surface of thigh and tibia, the number large (mean 26.5 ± 2.7, range 22-29, n = 6); breeding males possess creamy white nuptial pad with tiny velvety spines on the dorsal surface of the first finger, divided into three parts.

Morphology and phylogeny identify two new species and one new subspecies of Podoscypha from Yunnan Province, Southwest China

Project description:In this study, Podoscypha was taxonomically and phylogenetically evaluated. In total, five specimens collected from the tropical areas of Yunnan Province in Southwest China were studied. In combination with morphological observations and phylogenetic analyses based on ITS and LSU loci, two new species and one new subspecies, Podoscypha subinvoluta, P. tropica, and P. petalodes subsp. cystidiata, respectively, were discovered. The illustrated descriptions of the new species and subspecies are provided. Moreover, the main morphological differences between related species are discussed.

Four new species of Tremella (Tremellales, Basidiomycota) based on morphology and DNA sequence data.

Project description:In the present study, a total of 33 Tremella specimens in China were collected and examined using molecular phylogenetic analysis based on a combined sequence dataset of the nuc rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and nuc 28S rDNA D1/D2 domain in conjunction with the morphological characters. Four new species, namely Tremellabasidiomaticola, T.cheejenii, T.erythrina, and T.salmonea, are newly described based on their distinct phylogenetic relationships and the comparison of morphological characters with known Tremella species. Our results indicate a high species diversity of Tremella waiting to be discovered.

Simulating potential outbreaks of Delta and Omicron variants based on contact-tracing data: A modelling study in Fujian Province, China.

Project description:Although studies have compared the relative severity of Omicron and Delta variants by assessing the relative risks, there are still gaps in the knowledge of the potential COVID-19 burden these variations may cause. And the contact patterns in Fujian Province, China, have not been described. We identified 8969 transmission pairs in Fujian, China, by analyzing a contact-tracing database that recorded a SARS-CoV-2 outbreak in September 2021. We estimated the waning vaccine effectiveness against Delta variant infection, contact patterns, and epidemiology distributions, then simulated potential outbreaks of Delta and Omicron variants using a multi-group mathematical model. For instance, in the contact setting without stringent lockdowns, we estimated that in a potential Omicron wave, only 4.7% of infections would occur in Fujian Province among individuals aged >60 years. In comparison, 58.75% of the death toll would occur in unvaccinated individuals aged >60 years. Compared with no strict lockdowns, combining school or factory closure alone reduced cumulative deaths of Delta and Omicron by 28.5% and 6.1%, respectively. In conclusion, this study validates the need for continuous mass immunization, especially among elderly aged over 60 years old. And it confirms that the effect of lockdowns alone in reducing infections or deaths is minimal. However, these measurements will still contribute to lowering peak daily incidence and delaying the epidemic, easing the healthcare system's burden.
