Organolithium aggregation as a blueprint to construct polynuclear lithium nickelate clusters.

ABSTRACT: By exploiting the high aggregation of aliphatic lithium acetylides, here we report the synthesis and structural analysis of polynuclear lithium nickelate clusters in which up to 10 equivalents of organolithium can co-complex per Ni(0) centre. Exposure of the Ni(0)-ate clusters to dry air provides an alternative route to homoleptic Ni(II)-ates.

Crystallographic and solution NMR studies provide insight into the structure of well-defined chiral aggregates in which a lithium amide reagent directs asymmetric alkylation.

200 Years of Lithium and 100 Years of Organolithium Chemistry.

Project description:The element lithium has been discovered 200 years ago. Due to its unique properties it has emerged to play a vital role in industry, esp. for energy storage, and lithium-based products and processes support sustainable technological developments. In addition to the many uses of lithium in its inorganic forms, lithium has a rich organometallic chemistry. The development of organometallic chemistry has been hindered by synthetic problems from the start. When Wilhelm Schlenk developed the basic principles to handle and synthesize air- and moisture-sensitive compounds, the road was open to further developments. After more information was available about the stability and solubility of such compounds, they started to play an essential role in other fields of chemistry as alkyl or aryl transfer reagents.

Towards Hexagonal Planar Nickel: A Dispersion-Stabilised Tri-Lithium Nickelate.

Project description:Advancing the understanding of lithum nickelate complexes, here we report a family of homoleptic organonickelate complexes obtained by reacting Ni(COD)2 and lithium aryl-acetylides in the presence of the bidentate donor TMEDA. These compounds represent rare examples of low-valent transition-metals supported solely by organolithium ligands. Whilst the solid-state structures indicate a hexagonal planar geometry around Ni0 with Ni-Li bonds, bonding analysis via QTAIM, NCI, NBO and ELI methods reveals that the Ni-Li interactions are repulsive in nature, characterising these complexes as tri-coordinated. London dispersion forces between TMEDA and the organic substituents on nickel are found to play a crucial role in the stabilisation and thus isolation of these complexes. Preliminary reactivity studies demonstrate that the homoleptic lithium nickelates undergo stoichiometric cross-coupling with PhI to give dinickel clusters containing both anionic acetylide and neutral alkyne ligands.

In Situ Assembled Polynuclear Zinc Oxo Clusters Using Modified Schiff Bases as Ligands.

Project description:A series of different cores and nuclearity zinc metal clusters 1-5 have been synthesized using Zn(ClO4)2·6H2O, Schiff-base primary ligands, and dibenzoyl methane (DBM) or monoethanolamine (MEA) as co-ligand in a room-temperature reaction. The structure of the complexes is characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Among them, (1) [Zn(L1)(DBM)] is mononuclear; (2) [Zn4(L2)2(DBM)4], (3) [Zn4(L2)4(H2O)2(ClO4)2]·2CH2Cl2, and (4) [Zn4(L3)2(DBM)4] have a cubane core; and (5) [Zn4(L4)4(MEA)2(ClO4)2] has a ladderlike core structure. Compounds 1-5 have also been characterized using UV-vis absorption and emission spectroscopies. For an in-depth understanding of the absorption spectra of 1 and 3, density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been performed, which suggest that the transitions correspond to the π → π* intraligand charge transfer (ILCT) transitions.

Supramolecular polynuclear clusters sustained cubic hydrogen bonded frameworks with octahedral cages for reversible photochromism.

Project description:Developing supramolecular porous crystalline frameworks with tailor-made architectures from advanced secondary building units (SBUs) remains a pivotal challenge in reticular chemistry. Particularly for hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), construction of geometrical cavities through secondary units has been rarely achieved. Herein, a body-centered cubic HOF (TCA_NH4) with octahedral cages was constructed by a C3-symmetric building block and NH4+ node-assembled cluster (NH4)4(COOH)8(H2O)2 that served as supramolecular secondary building units (SSBUs), akin to the polynuclear SBUs in reticular chemistry. Specifically, the octahedral cages could encapsulate four homogenous haloforms including CHCl3, CHBr3, and CHI3 with truncated octahedron configuration. Crystallographic evidence revealed the cages served as spatially-confined nanoreactors, enabling fast, broadband photochromic effect associated with the reversible photo/thermal transformation between encapsulated CHI3 and I2. Overall, this work provides a strategy by shaping SSBUs to expand the framework topology of HOFs and a prototype of hydrogen-bonded nanoreactors to accommodate reversible photochromic reactions.

Expanded Mercaptocalixarenes: A New Kind of Macrocyclic Ligands for Stabilization of Polynuclear Thiolate Clusters.

Project description:The syntheses and properties of expanded 4-tert-butyl-mercaptocalix[4]arenes, in which the methylene linkers are replaced by -CH2 NRCH2 - or -CH2 NRCH2 - and -CH2 NRCH2 CH2 CH2 NRCH2 - units, are described. The new macrocycles were obtained in a step-wise manner, utilizing fully protected, i. e. S-alkylated, derivatives of the oxidation-sensitive thiophenols in the cyclisation steps. Reductive cleavage of the macrobicyclic or macrotricyclic intermediates (6, 7, 11) afforded the free thiophenols (H4 8, H4 9, and H4 12) in preparative yields as their hydrochloride salts. The protected proligands can exist in two conformations, resembling the "cone" and "1,3-alternate" conformations found for the parent calix[4]arenes. The free macrocycles do not show conformational isomerism, but are readily oxidized forming intramolecular disulfide linkages. Preliminary complexation experiments show that these expanded mercaptocalixarenes can serve as supporting ligands for tetranuclear thiolato clusters.

Aggregation-fragmentation and individual dynamics of active clusters.

Project description:A remarkable feature of active matter is the propensity to self-organize. One striking instance of this ability to generate spatial structures is the cluster phase, where clusters broadly distributed in size constantly move and evolve through particle exchange, breaking or merging. Here we propose an exhaustive description of the cluster dynamics in apolar active matter. Exploiting large statistics gathered on thousands of Janus colloids, we measure the aggregation and fragmentation rates and rationalize the resulting cluster size distribution and fluctuations. We also show that the motion of individual clusters is entirely consistent with a model positing random orientation of colloids. Our findings establish a simple, generic model of cluster phase, and pave the way for a thorough understanding of clustering in active matter.

Monodisperse Manganese-Vanadium-Oxo Clusters with Extraordinary Lithium Storage.

Project description:Although possessing well-defined nanostructures and excellent multi-electron redox properties, polyoxometalate clusters have poor intrinsic electrical conductivity and are prone to aggregation due to large surface energy, which makes them difficult to be fully utilized when applying as electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries. In this paper, monodisperse K7MnV13O38 (MnV13) clusters are achieved by rationally utilizing nano-sized high conductive carbon dots (CDs) as stabilizers. Benefiting from the fully exposed redox sites of MnV13 clusters (high utilization rate) and sufficient interfaces with carbon dots (extra interfacial energy storage), the optimized MnV13/10CDs anode delivers a high discharge capacity up to 1348 mAh g-1 at a current density of 0.1 A g-1 and exhibits superb rate/cycling capabilities. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations verify that ionic archway channels are formed between MnV13 and CDs, eliminating the bandgap and greatly improving the electron/ion conductivity of MnV13 and CDs. This paper paves a brand-new way for synthesis of monodisperse clusters and maximization of extra interfacial energy storage.

Using protein clusters from whole proteomes to construct and augment a dendrogram.

Project description:In this paper we present a new ab initio approach for constructing an unrooted dendrogram using protein clusters, an approach that has the potential for estimating relationships among several thousands of species based on their putative proteomes. We employ an open-source software program called pClust that was developed for use in metagenomic studies. Sequence alignment is performed by pClust using the Smith-Waterman algorithm, which is known to give optimal alignment and, hence, greater accuracy than BLAST-based methods. Protein clusters generated by pClust are used to create protein profiles for each species in the dendrogram, these profiles forming a correlation filter library for use with a new taxon. To augment the dendrogram with a new taxon, a protein profile for the taxon is created using BLASTp, and this new taxon is placed into a position within the dendrogram corresponding to the highest correlation with profiles in the correlation filter library. This work was initiated because of our interest in plasmids, and each step is illustrated using proteomes from Gram-negative bacterial plasmids. Proteomes for 527 plasmids were used to generate the dendrogram, and to demonstrate the utility of the insertion algorithm twelve recently sequenced pAKD plasmids were used to augment the dendrogram.

Lithium Enolates Derived from Pyroglutaminol: Aggregation, Solvation, and Atropisomerism.

Project description:Lithium enolates derived from protected pyroglutaminols were characterized by using (6)Li, (13)C, and (19)F NMR spectroscopies in conjunction with the method of continuous variations. Mixtures of tetrasolvated dimers and tetrasolvated tetramers in different proportions depend on the steric demands of the hemiaminal protecting group, tetrahydrofuran concentration, and the presence or absence of an α-fluoro moiety. The high steric demands of the substituted bicyclo[3.3.0] ring system promote dimers to an unusual extent and allow solvents and atropisomers in cubic tetramers to be observed in the slow-exchange limit. Pyridine used as a (6)Li chemical shift reagent proved useful in assigning solvation numbers.
