Project description:Using the microwave-assisted sol-gel method, Zn- and Cu-doped TiO2 nanoparticles with an anatase crystalline structure were prepared. Titanium (IV) butoxide was used as a TiO2 precursor, with parental alcohol as a solvent and ammonia water as a catalyst. Based on the TG/DTA results, the powders were thermally treated at 500 °C. XRD and XRF revealed the presence of a single-phase anatase and dopants in the thermally treated nanoparticles. The surface of the nanoparticles and the oxidation states of the elements were studied using XPS, which confirmed the presence of Ti, O, Zn, and Cu. The photocatalytic activity of the doped TiO2 nanopowders was tested for the degradation of methyl-orange (MO) dye. The results indicate that Cu doping increases the photoactivity of TiO2 in the visible-light range by narrowing the band-gap energy.

Project description:Transparent crystalline yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG; Y3Al5O12) is a dominant host material used in phosphors, scintillators, and solid state lasers. However, YAG single crystals and transparent ceramics face several technological limitations including complex, time-consuming, and costly synthetic approaches. Here we report facile elaboration of transparent YAG-based ceramics by pressureless nano-crystallization of Y2O3-Al2O3 bulk glasses. The resulting ceramics present a nanostructuration composed of YAG nanocrystals (77 wt%) separated by small Al2O3 crystalline domains (23 wt%). The hardness of these YAG-Al2O3 nanoceramics is 10% higher than that of YAG single crystals. When doped by Ce3+, the YAG-Al2O3 ceramics show a 87.5% quantum efficiency. The combination of these mechanical and optical properties, coupled with their simple, economical, and innovative preparation method, could drive the development of technologically relevant materials with potential applications in wide optical fields such as scintillators, lenses, gem stones, and phosphor converters in high-power white-light LED and laser diode.

Project description:Samples of cobalt-doped neodymium orthoferrite compounds, NdCoxFe1-xO3 (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) were synthesized via glycine auto-combustion between 250 and 300°C and calcined at 500°C for 2 h. X-ray diffraction showed that all compounds had an orthorhombic perovskite structure with space group Pbnm. Increasing cobalt doping gradually reduced the lattice parameters and contracted the unit cell volume. Both X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy showed that the particles were spherical and in the nano-sized range (19-52 nm) with pores between grains. Vibrating sample magnetometry at room temperature indicated that NdFeO3 has a high coercive field (1950 Oe) and cobalt substitution for iron led to a decrease in the coercive field, saturation and remanent magnetization, which was as a result of decreased magnetic moments in the crystal and reduced canting of the FeO6 octahedra. The increase in magnetization and coercive fields with increase of Co was connected to the microstructure (bond lengths and angles, defects, pores, grain boundaries) and crystallite size. The compounds NdCoxFe1-xO3 show antiferromagnetism with weak ferromagnetism due to uncompensated non-collinear moments. These compounds could serve as prototypes for tuning the properties of magnetic materials (ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic) with potential applications in data storage, logic gates, switches and sensors.

Project description:Yttrium iron garnet has a very high Verdet constant, is transparent in the infrared and is an insulating ferrimagnet leading to its use in optical and magneto-optical applications. Its high Q-factor has been exploited to make resonators and filters in microwave devices, but it also has the lowest magnetic damping of any known material. In this article we describe the structural and magnetic properties of single crystal thin-film YIG where the temperature dependence of the magnetisation reveals a decrease in the low temperature region. In order to understand this complex material we bring a large number of structural and magnetic techniques to bear on the same samples. Through a comprehensive analysis we show that at the substrate -YIG interface, an interdiffusion zone of only 4-6 nm exists. Due to the interdiffusion of Y from the YIG and Gd from the substrate, an addition magnetic layer is formed at the interface whose properties are crucially important in samples with a thickness of YIG less than 200 nm.

Project description:Long-distance transport and control of spin waves through nanochannels is essential for integrated magnonic technology. Current strategies relying on the patterning of single-layer nano-waveguides suffer from a decline of the spin-wave decay length upon downscaling or require large magnetic bias field. Here, we introduce a new waveguiding structure based on low-damping continuous yttrium iron garnet (YIG) films. Rather than patterning the YIG film, we define nanoscopic spin-wave transporting channels within YIG by dipolar coupling to ferromagnetic metal nanostripes. The hybrid material structure offers long-distance transport of spin waves with a decay length of ∼20 μm in 160 nm wide waveguides over a broad frequency range at small bias field. We further evidence that spin waves can be redirected easily by stray-field-induced bends in continuous YIG films. The combination of low-loss spin-wave guiding and straightforward nanofabrication highlights a new approach toward the implementation of magnonic integrated circuits for spin-wave computing.

Project description:Magnetic nanoparticles of Fe3O4 doped by different amounts of Y3+ (0, 0.1, 1, and 10%) ions were designed to obtain maximum heating efficiency in magnetic hyperthermia for cancer treatment. Single-phase formation was evident by X-ray diffraction measurements. An improved magnetization value was obtained for the Fe3O4 sample with 1% Y3+ doping. The specific absorption rate (SAR) and intrinsic loss of power (ILP) values for prepared colloids were obtained in water. The best results were estimated for Fe3O4 with 0.1% Y3+ ions (SAR = 194 W/g and ILP = 1.85 nHm2/kg for a magnetic field of 16 kA/m with the frequency of 413 kHz). The excellent biocompatibility with low cell cytotoxicity of Fe3O4:Y nanoparticles was observed. Immediately after magnetic hyperthermia treatment with Fe3O4:0.1%Y, a decrease in 4T1 cells' viability was observed (77% for 35 μg/mL and 68% for 100 μg/mL). These results suggest that nanoparticles of Fe3O4 doped by Y3+ ions are suitable for biomedical applications, especially for hyperthermia treatment.

Project description:Modern-day CMOS-based computation technology is reaching its fundamental limitations. The emerging field of magnonics, which utilizes spin waves for data transport and processing, proposes a promising path to overcome these limitations. Different devices have been demonstrated recently on the macro- and microscale, but the feasibility of the magnonics approach essentially relies on the scalability of the structure feature size down to the extent of a few 10 nm, which are typical sizes for the established CMOS technology. Here, we present a study of propagating spin-wave packets in individual yttrium iron garnet (YIG) conduits with lateral dimensions down to 50 nm. Space and time-resolved microfocused Brillouin-light-scattering (BLS) spectroscopy is used to characterize the YIG nanostructures and measure the spin-wave decay length and group velocity directly. The revealed magnon transport at the scale comparable to the scale of CMOS proves the general feasibility of magnon-based data processing.

Project description:The role of damping in the spin Seebeck effect (SSE) was studied experimentally for the first time. The experiments used Y3Fe5O12 (YIG)/Pt bilayered structures where the YIG films exhibit very similar structural and static magnetic properties but very different damping. The data show that a decrease in the damping gives rise to an increase in the SSE coefficient, which is qualitatively consistent with some of the theoretical models. This response also shows quasi-linear behavior, which was not predicted explicitly by previous studies. The data also indicate that the SSE coefficient shows no notable correlations with the enhanced damping due to spin pumping, which can be understood in the frame of two existing models.

Project description:Recently, magnons, which are quasiparticles describing the collective motion of spins, were found to undergo Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) at room temperature in films of Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG). Unlike other quasiparticle BEC systems, this system has a spectrum with two degenerate minima, which makes it possible for the system to have two condensates in momentum space. Recent Brillouin Light Scattering studies for a microwave-pumped YIG film of thickness d = 5 μm and field H = 1 kOe find a low-contrast interference pattern at the characteristic wavevector Q of the magnon energy minimum. In this report, we show that this modulation pattern can be quantitatively explained as due to unequal but coherent Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons into the two energy minima. Our theory predicts a transition from a high-contrast symmetric state to a low-contrast non-symmetric state on varying the d and H, and a new type of collective oscillation.

Project description:The degradation of organic pollutants in wastewaters assisted by oxide semiconductor nanostructures has been the focus of many research groups over the last decades, along with the synthesis of these nanomaterials by simple, eco-friendly, fast, and cost-effective processes. In this work, porous zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures were successfully synthesized via a microwave hydrothermal process. A layered zinc hydroxide carbonate (LZHC) precursor was obtained after 15 min of synthesis and submitted to different calcination temperatures to convert it into porous ZnO nanostructures. The influence of the calcination temperature (300, 500, and 700 °C) on the morphological, structural, and optical properties of the ZnO nanostructureswas investigated. All ZnO samples were tested as photocatalysts in the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) under UV irradiation and natural sunlight. All samples showed enhanced photocatalytic activity under both light sources, with RhB being practically degraded within 60 min in both situations. The porous ZnO obtained at 700 °C showed the greatest photocatalytic activity due to its high crystallinity, with a degradation rate of 0.091 and 0.084 min-1 for UV light and sunlight, respectively. These results are a very important step towards the use of oxide semiconductors in the degradation of water pollutants mediated by natural sunlight.
