Mutations that prevent the production of proteins in the <i>DMD</i> gene cause Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Most frequently, these are deletions leading to reading-frame shift. The "reading-frame rule" states that deletions that preserve ORF result in a milder Becker muscular dystrophy.
