A Green Synthesis of CoFe₂O₄ Decorated ZIF-8 Composite for Electrochemical Oxygen Evolution.

ABSTRACT: Low-cost, sustainable hydrogen production requires noble metal-free electrocatalysts for water splitting. In this study, we prepared zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF) decorated with CoFe₂O₄ spinel nanoparticles as active catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles were synthesized by converting agricultural bio-waste (potato peel extract) into economically valuable electrode materials. The biogenic CoFe₂O₄ composite showed an overpotential of 370 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 and a low Tafel slope of 283 mV dec^-1, whereas the ZIF@CoFe₂O₄ composite prepared using an in situ hydrothermal method showed an overpotential of 105 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 and a low Tafel slope of 43 mV dec^-1 in a 1 M KOH medium. The results demonstrated an exciting prospect of high-performance noble metal-free electrocatalysts for low-cost, high-efficiency, and sustainable hydrogen production.

CoFe2O4 Hollow Spheres-Decorated Three-Dimensional rGO Sponge for Highly Efficient Electrochemical Charge Storage Devices.

Project description:The energy demand, the crisis of fossil fuels, and the increasing popularity of portable and wearable electronics in the global market have triggered the demand to develop high-performance flexible all-solid-state supercapacitors that are capable of delivering high energy at high power density as well as being safely entrenched in those electronics. Herein, we have designed a nanocomposite, 80CFhs-20rGOsp, which exhibits a high specific capacitance (C S) value of 1032 F g-1 at 3 A g-1. Utilizing this nanocomposite as the cathode and reduced graphene oxide sponge (rGOsp) as the anode, a flexible all-solid-state asymmetric device has been fabricated. In this device, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) gel embedded with a mixture of 3 M KOH and 0.1 M K4[Fe(CN)6] was used as an electrolyte cum separator. The fabricated device showed the capability to deliver an energy density of 65.8 W h kg-1 at a power density of 1500 W kg-1 and retained its capability even after various physical deformations. The device also exhibited a long cycle life and retained ∼96% of its C S value after 5000 cycles. Moreover, the fabricated flexible all-solid-state device successfully illuminated light-emitting diodes, which proved its potential use in real-life supercapacitor applications. The obtained results revealed the excellent electrochemical performances of the fabricated device and rendered it a promising candidate in the energy sector.

A nickel nanoparticle engineered CoFe2O4@GO-Kryptofix 22 composite: a green and retrievable catalytic system for the synthesis of 1,4-benzodiazepines in water.

Project description:A composite of Ni nanoparticles incorporated in Kryptofix 22 conjugated magnetic nano-graphene oxide, CoFe2O4@GO-K 22·Ni, was synthesized via the grafting of Kryptofix 22 moieties on the magnetic nano-graphene oxide surface, followed by reaction of the nanocomposite with nickel nitrate. The Kryptofix 22 host material unit cavities can stabilize the Ni nanoparticles effectively and prevent their aggregation and separation from the surface. Characterization of the catalysts by FT-IR, FE-SEM, TGA, ICP, EDX, XRD, VSM and BET aided understanding the catalyst structure and morphology. This catalyst was efficiently applied for the synthesis of 1,4-benzodiazepine derivatives. The main advantages of the method are mild reaction conditions, inexpensive catalyst, it is environmentally benign, has high to excellent yields and shorter reaction times. This organometallic catalyst can be easily separated from a reaction mixture and was successfully examined for six runs with a slight loss of catalytic activity.

A facile synthesis of nanostructured CoFe2O4 for the electrochemical sensing of bisphenol A.

Project description:This work reports a novel, highly sensitive and cost-effective electrochemical sensor for the detection of bisphenol A in environmental water samples. Attractive non-noble transition metal oxide CoFe2O4 nanoparticles were successfully synthesized using a sol-gel combustion method and further characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Under optimal conditions, the CoFe2O4 nanoparticle modified glassy carbon electrode exhibits high electrochemical activity and good catalytic performance for the detection of bisphenol A. The linear calibration curves are obtained within a wide concentration range from 0.05 μmol L-1 to 10 μmol L-1, and the limit of detection is 3.6 nmol L-1 for bisphenol A. Moreover, this sensor also demonstrates excellent reproducibility, stability, and good anti-interference ability. The sensor was successfully applied to determine bisphenol A in practical samples, and the satisfactory recovery rate was between 95.5% and 102.0%. Based on the great electrochemical properties and practical application results, this electrochemical sensor has broad application prospects in the sensing of bisphenol A.

NiCoP-CeO2 composites for efficient electrochemical oxygen evolution.

Project description:In this study, a novel NiCoP-CeO2 composite was constructed on a Ni foam by a simple hydrothermal method and thermal phosphating strategy. In the OER test, NiCoP-CeO2 exhibited a low overpotential of 217 mV at 10 mA cm-2, 45 mV dec-1 of Tafel slopes. With the help of theoretical calculations and experimental characterization, the reason for performance improvement was analyzed in depth. The results show that CeO2 leads to a confinement effect, maintaining the nanosheet morphology of NiCo-LDHs, which contributes to sustaining the catalyst in favourable contact with H2O and minimizing the OER potential. Furthermore, by loading CeO2 onto NiCoP, the hydrophilicity of the catalyst is significantly enhanced. Our work provides an ingenious synthesis strategy for the preparation of efficient and inexpensive electrocatalytic materials.

Anchoring CoFe2O4 Nanoparticles on N-Doped Carbon Nanofibers for High-Performance Oxygen Evolution Reaction.

Project description:The exploration of earth-abundant and high-efficiency electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great significant for sustainable energy conversion and storage applications. Although spinel-type binary transition metal oxides (AB2O4, A, B = metal) represent a class of promising candidates for water oxidation catalysis, their intrinsically inferior electrical conductivity exert remarkably negative impacts on their electrochemical performances. Herein, we demonstrates a feasible electrospinning approach to concurrently synthesize CoFe2O4 nanoparticles homogeneously embedded in 1D N-doped carbon nanofibers (denoted as CoFe2O4@N-CNFs). By integrating the catalytically active CoFe2O4 nanoparticles with the N-doped carbon nanofibers, the as-synthesized CoFe2O4@N-CNF nanohybrid manifests superior OER performance with a low overpotential, a large current density, a small Tafel slope, and long-term durability in alkaline solution, outperforming the single component counterparts (pure CoFe2O4 and N-doped carbon nanofibers) and the commercial RuO2 catalyst. Impressively, the overpotential of CoFe2O4@N-CNFs at the current density of 30.0 mA cm-2 negatively shifts 186 mV as compared with the commercial RuO2 catalyst and the current density of the CoFe2O4@N-CNFs at 1.8 V is almost 3.4 times of that on RuO2 benchmark. The present work would open a new avenue for the exploration of cost-effective and efficient OER electrocatalysts to substitute noble metals for various renewable energy conversion/storage applications.

In situ hybridization of an MXene/TiO2/NiFeCo-layered double hydroxide composite for electrochemical and photoelectrochemical oxygen evolution.

Project description:Electrochemical and photoelectrochemical (PEC) oxygen evolution reactions (OER) are receiving considerable attention owing to their important roles in the overall water splitting reaction. In this contribution, ternary NiFeCo-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanoplates were in situ hybridized with Ti3C2T x (the MXene phase) via a simple solvothermal process during which Ti3C2T x was partially oxidized to form anatase TiO2 nanoparticles. The obtained Ti3C2T x /TiO2/NiFeCo-LDH composite (denoted as TTL) showed a superb OER performance as compared with pristine NiFeCo-LDH and comercial IrO2 catalyst, achieving a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a potential of 1.55 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE) in 0.1 M KOH. Importantly, the composite was further deposited on a standard BiVO4 film to construct a TTL/BiVO4 photoanode which showed a significantly enhanced photocurrent density of 2.25 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE under 100 mW cm-2 illumination. The excellent PEC-OER performance can be attributed to the presence of TiO2 nanoparticles which broadened the light adsorption to improve the generation of electron/hole pairs, while the ternary LDH nanoplates were efficient hole scavengers and the metallic Ti3C2T x nanosheets were effective shuttles for transporting electrons/ions. Our in situ synthetic method provides a facile way to prepare multi-component catalysts for effective water oxidation and solar energy conversion.

Spinel oxide CoFe2O4 grown on Ni foam as an efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction.

Project description:The effect of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is important in water splitting. In this work, we develop sphere-like morphology spinel oxide CoFe2O4/NF by hydrothermal reaction and calcination, and the diameter of the spheres is about 111.1 nm. The CoFe2O4/NF catalyst exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance with an overpotential of 273 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 78 mV dec-1. The cycling stability of CoFe2O4/NF is remarkable, and it only increased by 5 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm-2 after 3000 cycles. Therefore, this simple method to prepare CoFe2O4/NF can enhance the OER properties of electrocatalysts, which makes CoFe2O4/NF a promising material to replace noble metal-based catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction.

Decoration of green synthesized S, N-GQDs and CoFe2O4 on halloysite nanoclay as natural substrate for electrochemical hydrogen storage application.

Project description:Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) with high active sites are used as natural layered mineral supports. Sulfur- and nitrogen-co doped graphene quantum dots (S, N-GQDs) as conductive additive and CoFe2O4 as the electrocatalyst was decorated on a HNT support to design an effective and environmentally friendly active material. Herein, an eco-friendly CoFe2O4/S, N-GQDs/HNTs nanocomposite is fabricated via a green hydrothermal method to equip developed hydrogen storage sites and to allow for quick charge transportation for hydrogen storage utilization. The hydrogen storage capacity of pure HNTs was 300 mAhg-1 at a current density of 1 mA after 20 cycles, while that of S, N-GQD-coated HNTs (S, N-GQDs/HNTs) was 466 mAhg-1 under identical conditions. It was also conceivable to increase the hydrogen sorption ability through the spillover procedure by interlinking CoFe2O4 in the halloysite nanoclay. The hydrogen storage capacity of the CoFe2O4/HNTs was 450 mAhg-1, while that of the representative designed nanocomposites of CoFe2O4/S, N-GQDs/HNTs was 600 mAhg-1. The halloysite nano clay and treated halloysite show potential as electrode materials for electrochemical energy storage in alkaline media; in particular, ternary CoFe2O4/S, N-GQD/HNT nanocomposites prove developed hydrogen sorption performance in terms of presence of conductive additive, physisorption, and spillover mechanisms.

Scanning Electrochemical Cell Microscopy Investigation of Single ZIF-Derived Nanocomposite Particles as Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Evolution in Alkaline Media.

Project description:"Single entity" measurements are central for an improved understanding of the function of nanoparticle-based electrocatalysts without interference arising from mass transfer limitations and local changes of educt concentration or the pH value. We report a scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM) investigation of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67)-derived Co-N-doped C composite particles with respect to the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Surmounting the surface wetting issues as well as the potential drift through the use of a non-interfering Os complex as free-diffusing internal redox potential standard, SECCM could be successfully applied in alkaline media. SECCM mapping reveals activity differences relative to the number of particles in the wetted area of the droplet landing zone. The turnover frequency (TOF) is 0.25 to 1.5 s-1 at potentials between 1.7 and 1.8 V vs. RHE, respectively, based on the number of Co atoms in each particle. Consistent values at locations with varying number of particles demonstrates OER performance devoid of macroscopic film effects.

Oxygen-Plasma-Induced Hetero-Interface NiFe2O4/NiMoO4 Catalyst for Enhanced Electrochemical Oxygen Evolution.

Project description:The electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen is an effective method for solving the rapid consumption of fossil fuel resources and the problem of global warming. The key to its success is to design an oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst with efficient conversion and reliable stability. Interface engineering is one of the most effective approaches for adjusting local electronic configurations. Adding other metal elements is also an effective way to enrich active sites and improve catalytic activity. Herein, high-valence iron in a heterogeneous interface of NiFe2O4/NiMoO4 composite was obtained through oxygen plasma to achieve excellent electrocatalytic activity and stability. In particular, 270 mV of overpotential is required to reach a current density of 50 mA cm-2, and the overpotential required to reach 500 mA cm-2 is only 309 mV. The electron transfer effect for high-valence iron was determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The fast and irreversible reconstruction and the true active species in the catalytic process were identified by in situ Raman, ex situ XPS, and ex situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements. This work provides a feasible design guideline to modify electronic structures, promote a metal to an active oxidation state, and thus develop an electrocatalyst with enhanced OER performance.
