Synthesis of Metal/SU-8 Nanocomposites through Photoreduction on SU-8 Substrates.

ABSTRACT: The paper presents a simple, fast, and cost-effective method for creating metal/SU-8 nanocomposites by applying a metal precursor drop onto the surface or nanostructure of SU-8 and exposing it to UV light. No pre-mixing of the metal precursor with the SU-8 polymer or pre-synthesis of metal nanoparticles is required. A TEM analysis was conducted to confirm the composition and depth distribution of the silver nanoparticles, which penetrate the SU-8 film and uniformly form the Ag/SU-8 nanocomposites. The antibacterial properties of the nanocomposites were evaluated. Moreover, a composite surface with a top layer of gold nanodisks and a bottom layer of Ag/SU-8 nanocomposites was produced using the same photoreduction process with gold and silver precursors, respectively. The reduction parameters can be manipulated to customize the color and spectrum of various composite surfaces.

Self-Assembled TiN-Metal Nanocomposites Integrated on Flexible Mica Substrates towards Flexible Devices.

Project description:The integration of nanocomposite thin films with combined multifunctionalities on flexible substrates is desired for flexible device design and applications. For example, combined plasmonic and magnetic properties could lead to unique optical switchable magnetic devices and sensors. In this work, a multiphase TiN-Au-Ni nanocomposite system with core-shell-like Au-Ni nanopillars embedded in a TiN matrix has been demonstrated on flexible mica substrates. The three-phase nanocomposite film has been compared with its single metal nanocomposite counterparts, i.e., TiN-Au and TiN-Ni. Magnetic measurement results suggest that both TiN-Au-Ni/mica and TiN-Ni/mica present room-temperature ferromagnetic property. Tunable plasmonic property has been achieved by varying the metallic component of the nanocomposite films. The cyclic bending test was performed to verify the property reliability of the flexible nanocomposite thin films upon bending. This work opens a new path for integrating complex nitride-based nanocomposite designs on mica towards multifunctional flexible nanodevice applications.

TiO₂@PEI-Grafted-MWCNTs Hybrids Nanocomposites Catalysts for CO₂ Photoreduction.

Project description:Anatase (TiO₂) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes bearing polyethylenimine (PEI) anchored on their surface were hybridized in different proportions according to a sol-gel method. The resulting nanocomposites (TiO₂@PEI-MWCNTs), characterized by BET, XRD, XPS, SEM, and UV techniques, were found efficient catalysts for CO₂ photoreduction into formic and acetic acids in water suspension and under visible light irradiation. PEI-grafted nanotubes co-catalysts are believed to act as CO₂ activators by forming a carbamate intermediate allowing to accomplish the first example in the literature of polyamines/nanotubes/TiO₂ mediated CO₂ photoreduction to carboxylic acids.

Metal and polymer-mediated synthesis of porous crystalline hydroxyapatite nanocomposites for environmental remediation.

Project description:This study was focused on the preparation of metal and polymer-mediated porous crystalline hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanocomposites for environmental applications. Four different nano HAp systems were synthesized, namely, microwave irradiated HAp (M1), Zn doped HAp (M2), Mg-doped HAp (M3) and sodium alginate incorporated HAp (M4), and characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray fluorescence, thermogravimetric analysis and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analyses. Systems M1-M4 showed morphologies similar to coral shapes, polymer-like interconnected structures, sponges and feathery mycelium assemblies. Using XRD, selected area electron diffraction patterns and 1H and 31P CP/MAS solid-state NMR studies, crystallinity variation was observed from highest to lowest in the order of M4 > M1 > M3 > M2. Surface area estimates using BET isotherm reflected the highest surface area for M3, and M1 > M2 > M4. Four systems of M1-M4 were used as potential adsorbent materials for the removal of metal containing azo dye from aqueous system. Adsorption data were correlated to Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models. According to the results, the highest capacity of 212.8 mg g-1 was exhibited by M4 having mycelium like morphology with alginate groups. This study highlights the possibility of developing HAp nanocomposites for the effective removal of dye contaminants in the environment.

Bottom-up synthesis of ordered metal/oxide/metal nanodots on substrates for nanoscale resistive switching memory.

Project description:The bottom-up approach using self-assembled materials/processes is thought to be a promising solution for next-generation device fabrication, but it is often found to be not feasible for use in real device fabrication. Here, we report a feasible and versatile way to fabricate high-density, nanoscale memory devices by direct bottom-up filling of memory elements. An ordered array of metal/oxide/metal (copper/copper oxide/copper) nanodots was synthesized with a uniform size and thickness defined by self-organized nanotemplate mask by sequential electrochemical deposition (ECD) of each layer. The fabricated memory devices showed bipolar resistive switching behaviors confirmed by conductive atomic force microscopy. This study demonstrates that ECD with bottom-up growth has great potential to fabricate high-density nanoelectronic devices beyond the scaling limit of top-down device fabrication processes.

Additive manufacture of complex 3D Au-containing nanocomposites by simultaneous two-photon polymerisation and photoreduction.

Project description:The fabrication of complex three-dimensional gold-containing nanocomposite structures by simultaneous two-photon polymerisation and photoreduction is demonstrated. Increased salt delivers reduced feature sizes down to line widths as small as 78 nm, a level of structural intricacy that represents a significant advance in fabrication complexity. The development of a general methodology to efficiently mix pentaerythritol triacrylate (PETA) with gold chloride hydrate (HAuCl4∙3H2O) is reported, where the gold salt concentration is adjustable on demand from zero to 20 wt%. For the first-time 7-Diethylamino-3-thenoylcoumarin (DETC) is used as the photoinitiator. Only 0.5 wt% of DETC was required to promote both polymerisation and photoreduction of up to 20 wt% of gold salt. This efficiency is the highest reported for Au-containing composite fabrication by two-photon lithography. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) analysis confirmed the presence of small metallic nanoparticles (5.4 ± 1.4 nm for long axis / 3.7 ± 0.9 nm for short axis) embedded within the polymer matrix, whilst X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed that they exist in the zero valent oxidation state. UV-vis spectroscopy defined that they exhibit the property of localised surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). The capability demonstrated in this study opens up new avenues for a range of applications, including plasmonics, metamaterials, flexible electronics and biosensors.

Pulse irradiation synthesis of metal chalcogenides on flexible substrates for enhanced photothermoelectric performance.

Project description:High synthesis temperatures and specific growth substrates are typically required to obtain crystalline or oriented inorganic functional thin films, posing a significant challenge for their utilization in large-scale, low-cost (opto-)electronic applications on conventional flexible substrates. Here, we explore a pulse irradiation synthesis (PIS) to prepare thermoelectric metal chalcogenide (e.g., Bi2Se3, SnSe2, and Bi2Te3) films on multiple polymeric substrates. The self-propagating combustion process enables PIS to achieve a synthesis temperature as low as 150 °C, with an ultrafast reaction completed within one second. Beyond the photothermoelectric (PTE) property, the thermal coupling between polymeric substrates and bismuth selenide films is also examined to enhance the PTE performance, resulting in a responsivity of 71.9 V/W and a response time of less than 50 ms at 1550 nm, surpassing most of its counterparts. This PIS platform offers a promising route for realizing flexible PTE or thermoelectric devices in an energy-, time-, and cost-efficient manner.

General synthesis of ultrafine metal oxide/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites for ultrahigh-flux nanofiltration membrane.

Project description:Graphene-based membranes have great potential to revolutionize nanofiltration technology, but achieving high solute rejections at high water flux remains extremely challenging. Herein, a family of ultrafine metal oxide/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanocomposites are synthesized through a heterogenous nucleation and diffusion-controlled growth process for dye nanofiltration. The synthesis is based on the utilization of oxygen functional groups on GO surface as preferential active sites for heterogeneous nucleation, leading to the formation of sub-3 nm size, monodispersing as well as high-density loading of metal oxide nanoparticles. The anchored ultrafine nanoparticles could inhibit the wrinkling of the rGO nanosheet, forming highly stable colloidal solutions for the solution processing fabrication of nanofiltration membranes. By functioning as pillars, the nanoparticles remarkably increase both vertical interlayer spacing and lateral tortuous paths of the rGO membranes, offering a water permeability of 225 L m-2 h-1 bar-1 and selectivity up to 98% in the size-exclusion separation of methyl blue.

Strengthening behavior of carbon/metal nanocomposites.

Project description:Nanocomposites reinforced with nano-scale reinforcements exhibit excellent mechanical properties with low volume fraction of the reinforcement. For instance, only an addition of 0.7 vol.% few-layer graphene (FLG) into the pure titanium shows strength of ~1.5 GPa, obviously much superior to that of the monolithic titanium. The strengthening efficiency of composites is determined by several factors such as reinforcement geometrical/spatial characteristics and interfacial features between the matrix and the reinforcement. For the metal-matrix nanocomposites (MMNCs), since the nano-scale reinforcement has significantly high specific surface area, interfacial feature is more important and has to be clearly evaluated in understanding property of MMNCs. Although many researchers suggested the theoretical work using continuum mechanics in order to estimate the mechanical properties of the metallic composites, a clear determination has yet not to be proven by systematic experimental works. Here, we provide a new model to predict strength and stiffness of MMNCs based on quantitative analysis of efficiency parameters in which interface feature is strongly emphasized. To validate the model, we select multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) and FLG for reinforcement, and titanium (Ti) and aluminum (Al) for the matrix to modify bonding strength and specific surface area in the MMNCs.

Defect engineering of metal-oxide interface for proximity of photooxidation and photoreduction.

Project description:Close proximity between different catalytic sites is crucial for accelerating or even enabling many important catalytic reactions. Photooxidation and photoreduction in photocatalysis are generally separated from each other, which arises from the hole-electron separation on photocatalyst surface. Here, we show with widely studied photocatalyst Pt/[Formula: see text] as a model, that concentrating abundant oxygen vacancies only at the metal-oxide interface can locate hole-driven oxidation sites in proximity to electron-driven reduction sites for triggering unusual reactions. Solar hydrogen production from aqueous-phase alcohols, whose hydrogen yield per photon is theoretically limited below 0.5 through conventional reactions, achieves an ultrahigh hydrogen yield per photon of 1.28 through the unusual reactions. We demonstrated that such defect engineering enables hole-driven CO oxidation at the Pt-[Formula: see text] interface to occur, which opens up room-temperature alcohol decomposition on Pt nanoparticles to [Formula: see text] and adsorbed CO, accompanying with electron-driven proton reduction on Pt to [Formula: see text].

Synthesis of Metal-Organic Framework-Based ZIF-8@ZIF-67 Nanocomposites for Antibiotic Decomposition and Antibacterial Activities.

Project description:Toxic antibiotic effluents and antibiotic-resistant bacteria constitute a threat to global health. So, scientists are investigating high-performance materials for antibiotic decomposition and antibacterial activities. In this novel research work, we have successfully designed ZIF-8@ZIF-67 nanocomposites via sol-gel and solvothermal approaches. The ZIF-8@ZIF-67 nanocomposite is characterized by various techniques that exhibit superior surface area enhancement, charge separation, and high light absorption performance. Yet, ZIF-8 has high adsorption rates and active sites, while ZIF-67 has larger pore volume and efficient adsorption and reaction capabilities, demonstrating that the ZIF-8@ZIF-67 nanocomposite outperforms pristine ZIF-8 and ZIF-67. Compared with pristine ZIF-8 and ZIF-67, the most active 6ZIF-67@ZIF-8 nanocomposite showed higher decomposition efficacy for ciprofloxacin (65%), levofloxacin (54%), and ofloxacin (48%). Scavenger experiments confirmed that •OH, •O2-, and h+ are the most active species for the decomposition of ciprofloxacin (CIP), levofloxacin (LF), and ofloxacin (OFX), respectively. In addition, the 6ZIF-67/ZIF-8 nanocomposite suggested its potential applications in Escherichia coli for growth inhibition zone, antibacterial activity, and decreased viability. Moreover, the stability test and decomposition pathway of CIP, LF, and OFX were also proposed. Finally, our study aims to enhance the efficiency and stability of ZIF-8@ZIF-67 nanocomposite and potentially enable its applications in antibiotic decomposition, antibacterial activities, and environmental remediation.
