Evaluating the Effectiveness of Calcium Silicate in Enhancing Soybean Growth and Yield.

ABSTRACT: The application of silicon (Si) fertilizer positively impacts crop health, yield, and seed quality worldwide. Si is a "quasi-essential" element that is crucial for plant nutrition and stress response but is less associated with growth. This study aimed to investigate the effect of Si on the yield of cultivated soybean (Glycine max L). Two locations, Gyeongsan and Gunwi, in the Republic of Korea were selected, and a land suitability analysis was performed using QGIS version 3.28.1. The experiments at both locations consisted of three treatments: the control, Si fertilizer application at 2.3 kg per plot (9 m × 9 m) (T1), and Si fertilizer application at 4.6 kg per plot (9 m × 9 m) (T2). The agronomic, root, and yield traits, as well as vegetative indices, were analyzed to evaluate the overall impact of Si. The results demonstrated that Si had consistently significant effects on most root and shoot parameters in the two experimental fields, which led to significantly increased crop yield when compared with the control, with T2 (22.8% and 25.6%, representing an output of 2.19 and 2.24 t ha^-1 at Gyeongsan and Gunwi, respectively) showing a higher yield than T1 (11% and 14.2%, representing 1.98 and 2.04 t ha^-1 at Gyeongsan and Gunwi, respectively). These results demonstrate the positive impact of exogenous Si application on the overall growth, morphological and physiological traits, and yield output of soybeans. However, the application of the optimal concentration of Si according to the crop requirement, soil status, and environmental conditions requires further studies.

Project description:ContextPhotosynthetic stimulations have shown promising outcomes in improving crop photosynthesis, including soybean. However, it is still unclear to what extent these changes can impact photosynthetic assimilation and yield under long-term field climate conditions.ObjectiveIn this paper, we present a systematic evaluation of the response of canopy photosynthesis and yield to two critical parameters in leaf photosynthesis: the maximum carboxylation rate of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Vcmax) and the maximum electron transport of the ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate regeneration rate (Jmax).MethodsUsing the field-scale crop model Soybean-BioCro and ten years of observed climate data in Urbana, Illinois, U.S., we conducted sensitivity experiments to estimate the changes in canopy photosynthesis, leaf area index, and biomass due to the changes in Vcmax and Jmax.ResultsThe results show that 1) Both the canopy photosynthetic assimilation (An) and pod biomass yields were more sensitive to the changes in Jmax, particularly at high atmospheric carbon-dioxide concentrations ([CO2]); 2) Higher [CO2] undermined the effectiveness of increasing the two parameters to improve An and yield; 3) Under the same [CO2], canopy light interception and canopy respiration were key factors that undermined improvements in An and yield; 4) A canopy with smaller leaf area index tended to have a higher yield improvement, and 5) Increases in assimilations and yields were highly dependent on growing-season climatic conditions. The solar radiation, temperature, and relative humidity were the main climate drivers that impacted the yield improvement, and they had opposite correlations with improved yield during the vegetative phase compared to the reproductive phase.ConclusionsIn a world with elevated [CO2], genetic engineering crop photosynthesis should focus more on improving Jmax. Further, long-term climate conditions and seasonal variations must be considered to determine the improvements in soybean canopy photosynthesis and yield at the field scale.ImplicationsQuantifying the effectiveness of changing Vcmax and Jmax helps understand their individual and combined contributions to potential improvements in assimilation and yield. This work provides a framework for evaluating how altering the photosynthetic rate parameters impacts soybean yield and assimilation under different seasonal climate scenarios at the field scale.

Project description:BackgroundSeed size is an important quality trait in crops and is one of the key factors affecting crop yield; however, how seed size affects growth and physiological differences, stress resistance, and yield characteristics is unclear.MethodsIn this study, the effects of different seed sizes on germination, morphology, physiological characteristics, and yield traits of soybean were studied by combining germination, pot, and field experiments using Kenfeng 16 and Heinong 84 varieties.ResultsThe germination potential, rate, and index, as well as the vigor index of very small seeds, were significantly lower than those of other seed sizes. Plant height and leaf area followed the order: large > medium > small > very small seeds. Dry matter accumulation in each organ was significantly higher in large seeds than in small seeds. Superoxide dismutase and peroxidase activity, soluble sugar, soluble protein, and proline content were highest in large seeds, whereas malondialdehyde content was highest in very small seeds. The SPAD value (an indicator of chlorophyll content) was highest in large seeds, whereas steady-state fluorescence yield and non-photochemical quenching were higher in large and medium seeds. In terms of yield characteristics, the performance of pot experiment was basically consistent with that of field experiment. The number of pods and seeds per plant was in the order of large > medium > small > very small seeds, and no significant differences were observed in plant height, bottom pod height, node number, or internode length. The 100-seed weight and yield of the large seeds were higher than those of the small or very small seeds.ConclusionsSeeds of different grain sizes have differences in germination, which may be caused by differences in seed vigor. Medium to large seeds showed better growth effects in the field, including morphological parameters, photosynthetic parameters, etc. In addition, medium to large seeds also have better resistance levels and can better adapt to the environment. These factors ultimately lead to higher yields. This study promotes the further development of the production potential of excellent varieties, and provides valuable insights for soybean seed breeding and high-yield cultivation strategies.

Project description:Water scarcity leads to significant ecological challenges for global farming production. Sustainable agriculture depends on developing strategies to overcome the impacts of drought on important crops, including soybean. In this present study, seven promising soybean genotypes were evaluated for their drought tolerance potential by exposing them to water deficit conditions. The control group was maintained at 100% field capacity (FC), while the drought-treated group was maintained at 50% FC on a volume/weight basis. This treatment was applied at the second trifoliate leaf stage and continued until maturity. Our results demonstrated that water shortage exerted negative impacts on soybean phenotypic traits, physiological and biochemical mechanisms, and yield output in comparison with normal conditions. Our results showed that genotype G00001 exhibited the highest leaf area plant-1 (483.70 cm2), photosynthetic attributes like stomatal conductance (gs) (0.15 mol H2O m-2 s-1) and photosynthetic rate (Pn) (13.73 μmol CO2 m-2 s-1), and xylem exudation rate (0.25 g h-1) under drought conditions. The G00001 genotype showed greater leaf greenness by preserving photosynthetic pigments (total chlorophylls (Chls) and carotenoids; 4.23 and 7.34 mg g-1 FW, respectively) in response to drought conditions. Soybean plants accumulated high levels of stress indicators like proline and malondialdehyde when subjected to drought stress. However, genotype G00001 displayed lower levels of proline (4.49 μg g-1 FW) and malondialdehyde (3.70 μmol g-1 FW), indicating that this genotype suffered from less oxidative stress induced by drought stress compared to the other investigated soybean genotypes. Eventually, the G00001 genotype had a greater yield in terms of seeds pod-1 (SP) (1.90) and 100-seed weight (HSW) (14.60 g) under drought conditions. On the other hand, BD2333 exhibited the largest decrease in plant height (37.10%), pod number plant-1 (85.90%), SP (56.20%), HSW (54.20%), gs (90.50%), Pn (71.00%), transpiration rate (59.40%), relative water content (34.40%), Chl a (79.50%), total Chls (72.70%), and carotenoids (56.70%), along with the maximum increase in water saturation deficit (290.40%) and malondialdehyde content (280.30%) under drought compared to control conditions, indicating its higher sensitivity to drought stress. Our findings suggest that G00001 is a promising candidate to consider for field trials and further evaluation of its molecular signature may help breeding other elite cultivars to develop drought-tolerant, high-yielding soybean varieties.
