A memristor fingerprinting and characterisation methodology for hardware security.

ABSTRACT: The modern IC supply chain encompasses a large number of steps and manufacturers. In many applications it is critically important that chips are of the right quality and are assured to have been obtained from the legitimate supply chain. To this end, it is necessary to be able to uniquely identify systems to aid in supply chain tracking and quality assurance. Many identifiers, however, can be cloned onto counterfeit devices and are therefore untrustworthy. This paper proposes a methodology for using post-CMOS memristor devices as a fingerprint to uniquely identify ICs. To achieve this, memristors' unique and variable I-V characteristics are exploited to produce a fingerprint that can be generally applicable to a wide variety of different memristor technologies and identifiable over time, even where cell retention is non-ideal. In doing so it aims to minimise the hardware required on-chip both to minimise cost and maximise the auditability of the system. The methodology is applied to a [Formula: see text] memristor technology, and shown to be able to identify cells in a set.

Project description:Oscillatory Neural Networks (ONNs) are currently arousing interest in the research community for their potential to implement very fast, ultra-low-power computing tasks by exploiting specific emerging technologies. From the architectural point of view, ONNs are based on the synchronization of oscillatory neurons in cognitive processing, as occurs in the human brain. As emerging technologies, VO2 and memristive devices show promising potential for the efficient implementation of ONNs. Abundant literature is now becoming available pertaining to the study and building of ONNs based on VO2 devices and resistive coupling, such as memristors. One drawback of direct resistive coupling is that physical resistances cannot be negative, but from the architectural and computational perspective this would be a powerful advantage when interconnecting weights in ONNs. Here we solve the problem by proposing a hardware implementation technique based on differential oscillatory neurons for ONNs (DONNs) with VO2-based oscillators and memristor-bridge circuits. Each differential oscillatory neuron is made of a pair of VO2 oscillators operating in anti-phase. This way, the neurons provide a pair of differential output signals in opposite phase. The memristor-bridge circuit is used as an adjustable coupling function that is compatible with differential structures and capable of providing both positive and negative weights. By combining differential oscillatory neurons and memristor-bridge circuits, we propose the hardware implementation of a fully connected differential ONN (DONN) and use it as an associative memory. The standard Hebbian rule is used for training, and the weights are then mapped to the memristor-bridge circuit through a proposed mapping rule. The paper also introduces some functional and hardware specifications to evaluate the design. Evaluation is performed by circuit-level electrical simulations and shows that the retrieval accuracy of the proposed design is comparable to that of classic Hopfield Neural Networks.

Project description:To enhance the intelligent classification of computer vulnerabilities and improve the efficiency and accuracy of network security management, this study delves into the application of a comprehensive classification system that integrates the Memristor Neural Network (MNN) and an improved Temporal Convolutional Neural Network (TCNN) in network security management. This system not only focuses on the precise classification of vulnerability data but also emphasizes its core role in strengthening the network security management framework. Firstly, the study designs and implements a neural network model based on memristors. The MNN, by simulating the memory effect of biological neurons, effectively captures the complex nonlinear relationships within vulnerability data, thereby enhancing the data insight capabilities of the network security management system. Subsequently, structural optimization and parameter adjustments are made to the TCNN model, incorporating residual connections and attention mechanisms to improve its classification performance, making it more adaptable to the dynamically changing network security environment. Through data preprocessing, feature extraction, and model training, this study conducts experimental validation on a public vulnerability dataset. The experimental results indicate that: The MNN model demonstrates excellent performance across evaluation metrics such as Accuracy (ACC), Precision (P), Recall (R), and F1 Score, achieving an ACC of 89.5%, P of 90.2%, R of 88.7%, and F1 of 89.4%. The improved TCNN model shows even more outstanding performance on the aforementioned evaluation metrics. After structural optimization and parameter adjustments, the TCNN model's ACC increases to 93.8%, significantly higher than the MNN model. The P value also improves, reaching 91.5%, indicating enhanced capability in reducing false positives and improving vulnerability identification accuracy. The integrated classification system, leveraging the strengths of both the MNN and improved TCNN models, achieves an ACC of 95.2%. This improvement not only demonstrates the system's superior capability in accurately classifying vulnerability data but also proves the synergistic effect of MNN and TCNN models in addressing complex network security environments. The comprehensive classification system proposed in this study significantly enhances the classification performance of computer vulnerabilities, providing robust technical support for network security management. The system exhibits higher accuracy and stability in handling complex vulnerability datasets, making it highly valuable for practical applications and research.
