Can green technology reduce carbon dioxide emissions? Evidence from G7 and BRICS countries.

ABSTRACT: This study estimates the impact of green technology innovation and its interaction terms on CO₂ emission, by using the random and fixed effect estimate method, employs panel data of the G7 and BRICS countries from 1990 to 2019. The regression results show that a single type of green technological innovation has not a significant inhibitory effect on CO₂ emissions. The interaction of the two types of green technological innovations has a significant effect on the decrease of CO_2. Moreover, the study test the difference effect of green technological innovations on CO₂ emission among the G7 and BRICS countries. Furthermore, we also choose appropriate instrument variables to deal with the endogenesis of the model and examine model robustness. The findings demonstrate that the empirical conclusions can hold true in the test. Based on the findings above, we puts forward a few policy recommendations for G7 countries and BRICS countries to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Does California's Low Carbon Fuel Standards reduce carbon dioxide emissions?

Project description:The Low Carbon Fuel Standards (LCFS) represents a new policy approach designed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by applying standards to all stages of motor fuel production. We use the synthetic control and difference-in-differences econometric methods, and Lasso machine learning to analyze the effect of the LCFS on emissions in California's transportation sector. The three different techniques provide robust evidence that the LCFS reduced carbon dioxide emissions in California's transportation sector by around 10%. Furthermore, our calculations show that improved air quality, due to the application of the LCFS, may have benefited California in the magnitude of hundreds of millions of dollars through an increase in worker's productivity.

The causal nexus between energy consumption, carbon emissions and economic growth: New evidence from China, India and G7 countries using convergent cross mapping.

Project description:Understanding the causality between energy consumption, carbon emissions and economic growth is helpful for policymakers to formulate energy, environmental and economic policies. For the first time, based on nonlinear dynamics, this paper employs multispatial convergent cross mapping (CCM) to revisit the energy-carbon-economy causation for China, India and the G7 countries using both aggregate data and per capita data. The findings indicate that there are significant differences between developing countries and developed countries. A bidirectional nexus between energy consumption, carbon emissions and economic growth is found in China and India, but various causal relationships are identified in the G7 countries, including bidirectional, unidirectional and neutral nexus. The results confirm that the decoupling phenomenon is common in most G7 countries. By leveraging a variety of samples and a new approach, this study provides new evidence for policy authorities to formulate country-specific policies to obtain better environmental quality while achieving sustainable economic growth.

Does governance impact on the financial development-carbon dioxide emissions nexus in G20 countries.

Project description:In the past 40 years, the continuous strengthening of the greenhouse effect has led to a significant increase in the global average temperature. Although people's understanding of climate change has been strengthened, the world has not yet witnessed a significant decline in pollutant emissions; hence it is imperative to get to the root cause. This paper is based on the STIRPAT model framework and uses the panel data of G20 countries over the period 1999-2019 to examine the role of financial development on carbon emissions under good governance. The results show that financial development significantly promotes carbon dioxide emissions, and the impact presents an inverted "U"-shaped trend when the quadratic term of financial development is introduced. Surprisingly, governance quality indicators increase carbon emissions. However, financial development accompanied by good governance suppresses carbon emissions. Moreover, according to the grouped results of developed and developing countries, different nations should adopt differentiated strategies in development finance to implement the carbon emission targets proposed by the G20. In addition, this paper also confirms the existence of the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis. In light of this, policymakers should optimize the quality of governance while shifting their agendas toward environmentally responsible financial practices to promote financial development to improve environmental quality effectively. Furthermore, strengthen international cooperation, enhance public environmental protection concepts, and take joint actions to achieve low-carbon and win-win results.

Macroprudential policies and CO2 emissions: A comparative analysis of G7 and BRIC countries.

Project description:This study investigates the impact of macroprudential policies on CO2 emissions in G7 and BRIC countries using country-level panel data from 11 countries, covering the period from 1992 to 2020. The findings indicate that macroprudential policies alleviate CO2 emissions in the sample. Quantile regression results reveal that policies can exacerbate CO2 emissions in countries with high levels of CO2 emissions due to carbon leakage. The positive impact of macroprudential policies on sustainable development can be strengthened by high level of globalisation. Moreover, the influence of macroprudential policies stayed the same based on the basic regression results during the post-global financial crisis (GFC) period, while the impact was positive in the pre-GFC period. Finally, robust tests validated the findings reported in the basic regression model. From this, policymakers should prioritise sustainable economic growth when implementing macroprudential policies and leverage the influence of globalisation to amplify their impact on CO2 emissions. Furthermore, it is crucial to strengthen environmental regulations to prevent carbon leakage that result from industries seeking lenient standards.

Most industrialised countries have peaked carbon dioxide emissions during economic crises through strengthened structural change.

Project description:As the climate targets tighten and countries are impacted by several crises, understanding how and under which conditions carbon dioxide emissions peak and start declining is gaining importance. We assess the timing of emissions peaks in all major emitters (1965-2019) and the extent to which past economic crises have impacted structural drivers of emissions contributing to emission peaks. We show that in 26 of 28 countries that have peaked emissions, the peak occurred just before or during a recession through the combined effect of lower economic growth (1.5 median percentage points per year) and decreasing energy and/or carbon intensity (0.7) during and after the crisis. In peak-and-decline countries, crises have typically magnified pre-existing improvements in structural change. In non-peaking countries, economic growth was less affected, and structural change effects were weaker or increased emissions. Crises do not automatically trigger peaks but may strengthen ongoing decarbonisation trends through several mechanisms.

Mathematical modeling of vehicle carbon dioxide emissions.

Project description:The demand for transportation, driven by an increasing global population, is continuously rising. This has led to a higher number of vehicles on the road and an increased reliance on fossil fuels. Consequently, the rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels has contributed to global warming. Therefore, it is important to consider sustainable transportation practices to meet climate change mitigation targets. In this research paper, a non-linear mathematical model is developed to study the dynamics of atmospheric CO2 concentration in relation to human population, economic activities, forest biomass, and vehicle population. The developed model is analyzed qualitatively to understand the long-term behavior of the system's dynamics. Model parameters are fitted to actual data of world population, human economic activities, atmospheric CO2, forest biomass, and vehicle population. It is shown that increased vehicular CO2 emissions have a potential contribution to the increase in atmospheric CO2 and the decline of human population. Numerical simulations are carried out to verify the analytical findings and we performed global sensitivity analysis to explore the impacts of different sensitive parameters on the CO2 dynamics.

The societal responses to COVID-19: Evidence from the G7 countries.

Project description:This paper provides a picture of how societies in the G7 countries have responded to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our point of departure is to examine the effects of the pandemic in terms of four fundamental normative sources for well-being: Solidarity (S; willingness for social cooperation), Agency (A; empowerment to shape one's prospects through one's own efforts), GDP (G), and Environmental Performance (E)-SAGE for short. The normative foundations of SAGE are communitarianism, classical liberalism, materialistic utilitarianism, and ecoethics. We find that although G and E responded predictably and uniformly to the pandemic (such as G declining and carbon emissions improving), the societal responses were strikingly different. Societies that are cohesive and empowered (high S and A) may be expected to cope with the pandemic better than those that are fragmented and disempowered (low S and A). Furthermore, the pandemic has had diverse effects on S and A; while some societies became cohering and empowering (rising S and A), others became fragmenting and disempowering (falling S and A), and yet others became fragmenting and empowering. We also show that most G7 countries experienced greater tribalization (measured as the difference between inward S and outward S) during the pandemic. These trends are a matter of concern since they suggest that the willingness and perceived ability to address collective challenges collectively have waned. The analysis also suggests that governments' social policies may have an important role to play alongside economic and health policies in coping with the pandemic.

Irreversible climate change due to carbon dioxide emissions.

Project description:The severity of damaging human-induced climate change depends not only on the magnitude of the change but also on the potential for irreversibility. This paper shows that the climate change that takes place due to increases in carbon dioxide concentration is largely irreversible for 1,000 years after emissions stop. Following cessation of emissions, removal of atmospheric carbon dioxide decreases radiative forcing, but is largely compensated by slower loss of heat to the ocean, so that atmospheric temperatures do not drop significantly for at least 1,000 years. Among illustrative irreversible impacts that should be expected if atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations increase from current levels near 385 parts per million by volume (ppmv) to a peak of 450-600 ppmv over the coming century are irreversible dry-season rainfall reductions in several regions comparable to those of the "dust bowl" era and inexorable sea level rise. Thermal expansion of the warming ocean provides a conservative lower limit to irreversible global average sea level rise of at least 0.4-1.0 m if 21st century CO(2) concentrations exceed 600 ppmv and 0.6-1.9 m for peak CO(2) concentrations exceeding approximately 1,000 ppmv. Additional contributions from glaciers and ice sheet contributions to future sea level rise are uncertain but may equal or exceed several meters over the next millennium or longer.

Carbon dioxide equivalent emissions from corn silage fermentation.

Project description:The European Climate Law recently codified the goal for European climate neutrality by 2050, highlighting the need for sustainable farming practices within a robust and transparent carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) accounting system. In the present study, a series of equations were proposed for the estimation of CO2e emissions from corn silage fermentation. Systematic review of previous meta-analyses of corn silage fermentation identified the mean and standard deviation statistics for key model inputs of acetic acid, ethanol, lactic acid, ammonia, and volatile-corrected dry matter loss. Estimates of CO2e emissions were determined for a mock dataset comprising 1,000 iterations of randomly-generated values for each metric in accordance with mean and variance statistics of the source data. Estimates for CO2e emissions of corn silage based on meta-analysis review of laboratory experiments were 1.9 ± 5.6% (GWP20) and 0.2 ± 5.5% (GWP100) of silage dry matter. Furthermore, model results demonstrated a precedent for CO2 recycling by silage microorganisms, which was supported by genome annotation of strains belonging to common silage species. Linear model equations for GWP20 and GWP100 with inputs and outputs in mg kg-1 silage dry matter were developed, where inputs are acetic acid (A), ethanol (E), lactic acid (L), and volatile corrected dry matter loss (DV). Carbon dioxide fixation in green sulphur bacteria.

Project description:1. About one-third of the CO(2) fixed during photosynthesis by washed suspensions of Chlorobium thiosulfatophilum strain 8346 gave rise to alpha-oxoglutarate and branched-chain oxo acids, mainly beta-methyl-alpha-oxovalerate. Another one-third to one-half gave rise to a polyglucose. 2. The fixation of CO(2) was inhibited by fluoroacetate, increasing concentrations up to 1mm stimulating the accumulation of alpha-oxoglutarate and causing a decrease in the formation of the branched-chain oxo acids and polyglucose. 3. Acetate was converted into the same products as was CO(2). 4. Fluoroacetate (1mm) had a negligible effect on the formation of polyglucose from acetate and caused a slight inhibition of the formation of the branched-chain oxo acids and increased accumulation of alpha-oxoglutarate. 5. Iodoacetate (1mm) strongly inhibited polyglucose formation from acetate and caused accumulation of pyruvate. The formation of the branched-chain oxo acids from acetate was only slightly affected by this inhibitor. 6. Pyruvate can be metabolized by this organism in the presence of a suitable electron donor whether CO(2) is present or not. In the absence of CO(2) pyruvate is converted into polyglucose. 7. The accumulation of oxo acids during CO(2) fixation is completely inhibited by NH(4) (+) ions. The formation of the branched-chain oxo acids is considerably decreased by the presence of isoleucine, leucine or valine, or a mixture of these. 8. CO(2) fixation in two other strains of Chlorobium appears to exhibit a similar pattern to that in C. thiosulfatophilum strain 8346. 9. It is concluded that in washed suspensions, CO(2) is fixed mainly by a mechanism involving the reductive carboxylic acid cycle. Acetate, the product of the cycle, is converted into polyglucose via pyruvate synthase and a reversal of glycolysis or into branched-chain oxo acids by an unknown mechanism.
