Notes on two Stiphropus species from China (Araneae, Thomisidae).

ABSTRACT:

Background

The spider genus Stiphropus Gerstaecker, 1873 currently includes 21 extant species that are distributed in Africa (12) and Asia (9). Four species, S.falciformus Yang, Zhu & Song, 2006, S.myrmecophilus Huang & Lin, 2020, S.ocellatus Thorell, 1887 and S.soureni Sen, 1964, are currently known from China.

New information

The mismatched female of S.falciformus is reported as a new species: S.qianlei sp. n. (♂♀). The unknown male of S.soureni Sen, 1964 is described for the first time. Photos and morphological descriptions are provided.

Project description:Taxonomic notes on the Talaus species from China are provided. Two new species, T.yuyang Yao & Liu, sp. nov. and T.zhangjiangkou Yao & Liu, sp. nov. are described and illustrated, and a further three species are redescribed based on their genitalic characters: T.dulongjiang Tang, Yin, Ubick & Peng, 2008, T.niger Tang, Yin, Ubick & Peng, 2008, and T.sulcus Tang & Li, 2010. The species T.xiphosus Zhu & Ono, 2007 is considered a junior synonym of T.triangulifer Simon, 1886 based on an examination of many recently collected female and male specimens from Guangxi Province, China. The female of Massuriabandian Tang & Li, 2010 is described for the first time from Jianfengling National Natural Reserve, Hainan Province, China. The species Diaeasimplex Xu, Han & Li, 2008 is described as a synonym of Massuriabellula Xu, Han & Li, 2008 based on female and male specimens from Guangdong Province, China. Massuriaminsp. nov. described as a new species (female, Fujian Province, China). Detailed illustrations and a distribution map are provided for these three species of Massuria.

A new species of Lysiteles Simon, 1895 (Araneae, Thomisidae) from South China.

Project description:BackgroundLysiteles Simon, 1895 is one of the largest taxa with small body size among the Thomisidae and is mainly distributed in East, South and Southeast Asia. Most of them are recorded from southern provinces of China, such as Jiangxi Province, including three species. However, all of them are only discovered from Jinggang Mountain National Nature Reserve in Jiangxi Province. But there are still other species remaining unknown which need to be surveyed from other areas in this Province.New informationOne Lysiteles species was collected from Nanfengmian National Nature Reserve in Jiangxi Province. Based on morphological characters, it was recognised as a new species and has been named as Lysitelesnanfengmian sp. n. It is described and illustrated with photographs and its distribution is also mapped.

Project description:The Pholcus phungiformes species group is highly diverse and currently contains 53 species. In this study, Pholcus tongyaoi Wang & Yao, sp. nov. (male, female) from Huairou District, Beijing, China is described while similar congener Pholcus lexuancanhi Yao, Pham & Li, 2012 from neighboring Haidian District (type locality) is redescribed; the female of P. lexuancanhi is described for the first time. In addition, the DNA barcode COI for the two species was obtained to estimate p-distance.

DNA barcodes (a partial fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene, COI) of the species were obtained to confirm matching of the sexes and for future use in molecular studies.

Project description:A list of 34 thomisid species belonging to 21 genera collected in Jangxi Province of China is provided. Five new species are described: Angaeusxieluae Liu, sp. nov. (♂♀), Lysitelessubspirellus Liu, sp. nov. (♀), Oxytatemucunica Liu, sp. nov. (♀), Phartalingxiufengica Liu, sp. nov. (♀), Stephanopisxiangzhouica Liu, sp. nov. (♀). A new combination is proposed: Ebelingiaforcipata (Song & Zhu, 1993) comb. nov. (ex. Ebrechtella Dahl, 1907). Previously unknown females of E.forcipata (Song & Zhu, 1993), Oxytatebicornis Liu, Liu & Xu, 2017, and Xysticuslesserti Schenkel, 1963 are described for the first time. Stephanopis O Pickard-Cambridge, 1869, a genus previously known from Australasia and South America, is recorded from the Asian mainland for the first time.
