Project description:High spatial resolution remote sensing image (HSRRSI) data provide rich texture, geometric structure, and spatial distribution information for surface water bodies. The rich detail information provides better representation of the internal components of each object category and better reflects the relationships between adjacent objects. In this context, recognition methods such as geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) have improved significantly. However, these methods focus mainly on bottom-up classifications from visual features to semantic categories, but ignore top-down feedback which can optimize recognition results. In recent years, deep learning has been applied in the field of remote sensing measurements because of its powerful feature extraction ability. A special convolutional neural network (CNN) based region proposal generation and object detection integrated framework has greatly improved the performance of object detection for HSRRSI, which provides a new method for water body recognition based on remote sensing data. This study uses the excellent "self-learning ability" of deep learning to construct a modified structure of the Mask R-CNN method which integrates bottom-up and top-down processes for water recognition. Compared with traditional methods, our method is completely data-driven without prior knowledge, and it can be regarded as a novel technical procedure for water body recognition in practical engineering application. Experimental results indicate that the method produces accurate recognition results for multi-source and multi-temporal water bodies, and can effectively avoid confusion with shadows and other ground features.

Project description:Multiscale segmentation (MSS) is crucial in object-based image analysis methods (OBIA). How to describe the underlying features of remote sensing images and combine multiple features for object-based multiscale image segmentation is a hotspot in the field of OBIA. Traditional object-based segmentation methods mostly use spectral and shape features of remote sensing images and pay less attention to texture and edge features. We analyze traditional image segmentation methods and object-based MSS methods. Then, on the basis of comparing image texture feature description methods, a method for remote sensing image texture feature description based on time-frequency analysis is proposed. In addition, a method for measuring the texture heterogeneity of image objects is constructed on this basis. Using bottom-up region merging as an MSS strategy, an object-based MSS algorithm for remote sensing images combined with texture feature is proposed. Finally, based on the edge feature of remote sensing images, a description method of remote sensing image edge intensity and an edge fusion cost criterion are proposed. Combined with the heterogeneity criterion, an object-based MSS algorithm combining spectral, shape, texture, and edge features is proposed. Experiment results show that the comprehensive features object-based MSS algorithm proposed in this article can obtain more complete segmentation objects when segmenting ground objects with rich texture information and slender shapes and is not prone to over-segmentation. Compare with the traditional object-based segmentation algorithm, the average accuracy of the algorithm is increased by 4.54%, and the region ratio is close to 1, which will be more conducive to the subsequent processing and analysis of remote sensing images. In addition, the object-based MSS algorithm proposed in this article can effectively obtain more complete ground objects and can be widely used in scenes such as building extraction.

Project description:Despite rapid advances and large-scale initiatives in forest mapping, reliable cross-border information about the status of forest resources in Central Asian countries is lacking. We produced consistent Central Asia forest cover (CAFC) maps based on a cost-efficient approach using multi-resolution satellite imagery from Landsat and MODIS during 2009-2011. The spectral-temporal metrics derived from 2009-2011 Landsat imagery (overall accuracy of 0.83) was used to predict sub-pixel forest cover on the MODIS scale for 2010. Accuracy assessment confirmed the validity of MODIS-based forest cover map with a normalized root-mean-square error of 0.63. A general paucity of forest resources in post-Soviet Central Asia was indicated, with 1.24% of the region covered by forest. In comparison to the CAFC map, a regional map derived from MODIS Vegetation Continuous Fields tended to underestimate forest cover, while the Global Forest Change product matched well. The Global Forest Resources Assessments, based on individual country reports, overestimated forest cover by 1.5 to 147 times, particularly in the more arid countries of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Multi-resolution imagery contributes to regionalized assessment of forest cover in the world's drylands while developed CAFC maps (available at https://data.zef.de/ ) aim to facilitate decisions on biodiversity conservation and reforestation programs in Central Asia.

Project description:The European Commission (EC) has published a European Union (EU) Road Safety Framework for the period 2021 to 2030 to reduce road fatalities. In addition, the EC with the EU Directive 2019/1936 requires a much more detailed recording of road attributes. Therefore, automatic detection of school routes, four classes of crosswalks, and divided carriageways were performed in this paper. The study integrated satellite imagery as a data source and the Yolo object detector. The satellite Pleiades Neo 3 with a spatial resolution of 0.3 m was used as the source for the satellite images. In addition, the study was divided into three phases: vector processing, satellite imagery processing, and training and evaluation of the You Only Look Once (Yolo) object detector. The training process was performed on 1951 images with 2515 samples, while the evaluation was performed on 651 images with 862 samples. For school zones and divided carriageways, this study achieved accuracies of 0.988 and 0.950, respectively. For crosswalks, this study also achieved similar or better results than similar work, with accuracies ranging from 0.957 to 0.988. The study also provided the standard performance measure for object recognition, mean average precision (mAP), as well as the values for the confusion matrix, precision, recall, and f1 score for each class as benchmark values for future studies.

Project description:Gully erosion is a serious environmental problem worldwide, causing soil loss, land degradation, silting up of reservoirs and even catastrophic flooding. Mapping gully features from remote sensing imagery is crucial for assisting in understanding gully erosion mechanisms, predicting its development processes and assessing its environmental and socio-economic effects over large areas, especially under the increasing global climate extremes and intensive human activities. However, the potential of using increasingly available high-resolution remote sensing imagery to detect and delineate gullies has been less evaluated. Hence, 130 gullies occurred along a transect were selected from a typical watershed in the hilly and gully region of the Chinese Loess Plateau, and visually interpreted from a Pleiades-1B satellite image (panchromatic-sharpened image at 0.5 m resolution fused with 2.0 m multi-spectral bands). The interpreted gullies were compared with their measured data obtained in the field using a differential global positioning system (GPS). Results showed that gullies could generally be accurately interpreted from the image, with an average relative error of gully area and gully perimeter being 11.1% and 8.9%, respectively, and 74.2% and 82.3% of the relative errors for gully area and gully perimeter were within 15%. But involving field measurements of gullies in present imagery-based gully studies is still recommended. To judge whether gullies were mapped accurately further, a standard adopting one-pixel tolerance along the mapped gully edges was proposed and proved to be practical. Correlation analysis indicated that larger gullies could be interpreted more accurately but increasing gully shape complexity would decrease interpreting accuracy. Overall lower vegetation coverage in winter due to the withering and falling of vegetation rarely affected gully interpreting. Furthermore, gully detectability on remote sensing imagery in this region was lower than the other places of the world, due to the overall broken topography in the Loess Plateau, thus images with higher resolution than normally perceived are needed when mapping erosion features here. Taking these influencing factors (gully dimension and shape complexity, vegetation coverage, topography) into account will be favorable to select appropriate imagery and gullies (as study objects) in future imagery-based gully studies. Finally, two linear regression models were built to correct gully area (Aip, m²) and gully perimeter (Pip, m) visually extracted, by connecting them with the measured area (Ams, m²) and perimeter (Pms, m). The correction models were Ams=1.021Aip+0.139 and Pms=0.949Pip+ 0.722, respectively. These models could be helpful for improving the accuracy of interpreting results, and further accurately estimating gully development and developing more effective automated gully extraction methods on the Loess Plateau of China.

Project description:Very high-resolution (VHR) satellite imagery has proven to be useful for detection of large to medium cetaceans, such as odontocetes and offers some significant advantages over traditional detection methods. However, the significant time investment needed to manually read satellite imagery is currently a limiting factor to use this method across large open ocean regions. The objective of this study is to develop a semi-automated detection method using object-based image analysis to identify beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) in open water (summer) ocean conditions in the Arctic using panchromatic WorldView-3 satellite imagery and compare the detection time between human read and algorithm detected imagery. The false negative rate, false positive rate, and automated count deviation were used to assess the accuracy and reliability of various algorithms for reading training and test imagery. The best algorithm, which used spectral mean and texture variance attributes, detected no false positives and the false negative rate was low (<4%). This algorithm was able to accurately and reliably identify all the whales detected by experienced readers in the ice-free panchromatic image. The autodetection algorithm does have difficulty separately identifying whales that are perpendicular to one another, whales below the surface, and may use multiple segments to define a whale. As a result, for determining counts of whales, a reader should manually review the automated results. However, object-based image analysis offers a viable solution for processing large amounts of satellite imagery for detecting medium-sized beluga whales while eliminating all areas of the imagery which are whale-free. This algorithm could be adapted for detecting other cetaceans in ice-free water.

Project description:Climate variability and man-made impacts have severely damaged forests around the world in recent years, which calls for an urgent need of restoration aiming toward long-term sustainability for the forest environment. This paper proposes a new three-level decision tree (TLDT) approach to map forest, shadowy, bare and low-vegetated lands sequentially by integrating three spectral indices. TLDT requires neither image normalization nor atmospheric correction, and improves on the other methods by introducing more levels of decision tree classification with inputs from the same multispectral imagery. This approach is validated by comparing the results obtained from aerial orthophotos (25 cm) that were acquired at approximately the same time in which the Formosa-2 images (8 m) were being taken. The overall accuracy is as high as 96.8% after excluding the deviations near the boundary of each class caused by the different resolutions. With TLDT, the effectiveness of forest restoration at 30 sites are assessed using all available multispectral Formosat-2 images acquired between 2005 and 2016. The distinction between natural regeneration and regrowth enhanced by restoration efforts were also made by using the existing dataset and TLDT developed in this research. This work supports the use of multitemporal remote sensing imagery as a reliable source of data for assessing the effectiveness of forest restoration on a regular basis. This work also serves as the basis for studying the global trend of forest restoration in the future.

Project description:Light emerging from natural water bodies and measured by radiometers contains information about the local type and concentrations of phytoplankton, non-algal particles and colored dissolved organic matter in the underlying waters. An increase in spectral resolution in forthcoming satellite and airborne remote sensing missions is expected to lead to new or improved capabilities for characterizing aquatic ecosystems. Such upcoming missions include NASA's Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission; the NASA Surface Biology and Geology designated observable mission; and NASA Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer - Next Generation (AVIRIS-NG) airborne missions. In anticipation of these missions, we present an organized dataset of geographically diverse, quality-controlled, high spectral resolution inherent and apparent optical property (IOP-AOP) aquatic data. The data are intended to be of use to increase our understanding of aquatic optical properties, to develop aquatic remote sensing data product algorithms, and to perform calibration and validation activities for forthcoming aquatic-focused imaging spectrometry missions. The dataset is comprised of contributions from several investigators and investigating teams collected over a range of geographic areas and water types, including inland waters, estuaries, and oceans. Specific in situ measurements include remote-sensing reflectance, irradiance reflectance, and coefficients describing particulate absorption, particulate attenuation, non-algal particulate absorption, colored dissolved organic matter absorption, phytoplankton absorption, total absorption, total attenuation, particulate backscattering, and total backscattering. Project description:Extinction risks for many insect species, particularly across very broad spatial extents, have been linked to the growing frequency and severity of temperatures that exceed the boundaries of their realized niches. Measurement and mitigation of such impacts is hindered by the availability of high-resolution measurements of species-specific severity of extreme weather, especially temperature. While techniques enabling interpolation of broad-scale remote sensing metrics are vital for such efforts, direct remote sensing measurements of thermal conditions could improve habitat management by providing detailed insights that interpolative approaches cannot. Advances in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology have created opportunities to better evaluate the role of microclimates in local species extinctions. Here, we develop a method to create high-resolution maps of microclimates using UAV and thermal imaging technology that use species' realized niche boundaries to assess potential effects of severity of extreme temperatures. We generated air temperature maps (5 cm resolution) and canopy height maps (1 cm resolution) for 15 sites in a rare alvar ecosystem in eastern Ontario. We validated these remote sensing observations against independent, in situ temperature observations using iButtons. Temperature observations were accurate and related to physical heterogeneity in alvar habitats. We converted temperature measures into estimates of proximity of thermal niche boundaries for three butterfly species found during field surveys. This is the first time that this method has been applied to high resolution remote sensing observations and offers potential to assess the availability and adequacy of microclimates within habitats at resolutions relevant for conservation management.

Project description:The pressure for food production has expanded agriculture frontiers worldwide, posing a threat to water resources. For instance, placing crop systems over hydromorphic soils (HS), have a direct impact on groundwater and influence the recharge of riverine ecosystems. Environmental regulations improved over the past decades, but it is difficult to detect and protect these soils. To overcome this issue, we applied a temporal remote sensing strategy to generate a synthetic soil image (SYSI) associated with random forest (RF) to map HS in an 735,953.8 km2 area in Brazil. HS presented different spectral patterns from other soils, allowing the detection by satellite sensors. Slope and SYSI contributed the most for the prediction model using RF with cross validation (accuracy of 0.92). The assessments showed that 14.5% of the study area represented HS, mostly located inside agricultural areas. Soybean and pasture areas had up to 14.9% while sugar cane had just 3%. Here we present an advanced remote sensing technique that may improve the identification of HS under agriculture and assist public policies for their conservation.
