Functional MRI responses to naturalistic stimuli are increasingly typical across early childhood.

ABSTRACT: While findings show that throughout development, there are child- and age-specific patterns of brain functioning, there is also evidence for significantly greater inter-individual response variability in young children relative to adults. It is currently unclear whether this increase in functional "typicality" (i.e., inter-individual similarity) is a developmental process that occurs across early childhood, and what changes in BOLD response may be driving changes in typicality. We collected fMRI data from 81 typically developing 4-8-year-old children during passive viewing of age-appropriate television clips and asked whether there is increasing typicality of brain response across this age range. We found that the "increasing typicality" hypothesis was supported across many regions engaged by passive viewing. Post hoc analyses showed that in a priori ROIs related to language and face processing, the strength of the group-average shared component of activity increased with age, with no concomitant decline in residual signal or change in spatial extent or variability. Together, this suggests that increasing inter-individual similarity of functional responses to audiovisual stimuli is an important feature of early childhood functional brain development.

Project description:One of human brain's remarkable traits lies in its capacity to dynamically coordinate the activities of multiple brain regions or networks, adapting to an externally changing environment. Studying the dynamic functional brain networks (DFNs) and their role in perception, assessment, and action can significantly advance our comprehension of how the brain responds to patterns of sensory input. Movies provide a valuable tool for studying DFNs, as they offer a naturalistic paradigm that can evoke complex cognitive and emotional experiences through rich multimodal and dynamic stimuli. However, most previous research on DFNs have predominantly concentrated on the resting-state paradigm, investigating the topological structure of temporal dynamic brain networks generated via chosen templates. The dynamic spatial configurations of the functional networks elicited by naturalistic stimuli demand further exploration. In this study, we employed an unsupervised dictionary learning and sparse coding method combing with a sliding window strategy to map and quantify the dynamic spatial patterns of functional brain networks (FBNs) present in naturalistic functional magnetic resonance imaging (NfMRI) data, and further evaluated whether the temporal dynamics of distinct FBNs are aligned to the sensory, cognitive, and affective processes involved in the subjective perception of the movie. The results revealed that movie viewing can evoke complex FBNs, and these FBNs were time-varying with the movie storylines and were correlated with the movie annotations and the subjective ratings of viewing experience. The reliability of DFNs was also validated by assessing the Intra-class coefficient (ICC) among two scanning sessions under the same naturalistic paradigm with a three-month interval. Our findings offer novel insight into comprehending the dynamic properties of FBNs in response to naturalistic stimuli, which could potentially deepen our understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying the brain's dynamic changes during the processing of visual and auditory stimuli.

Project description:While naturalistic stimuli, such as movies, better represent the complexity of the real world and are perhaps crucial to understanding the dynamics of emotion processing, there is limited research on emotions with naturalistic stimuli. There is a need to understand the temporal dynamics of emotion processing and their relationship to different dimensions of emotion experience. In addition, there is a need to understand the dynamics of functional connectivity underlying different emotional experiences that occur during or prior to such experiences. To address these questions, we recorded the EEG of participants and asked them to mark the temporal location of their emotional experience as they watched a video. We also obtained self-assessment ratings for emotional multimedia stimuli. We calculated dynamic functional the connectivity (DFC) patterns in all the frequency bands, including information about hubs in the network. The change in functional networks was quantified in terms of temporal variability, which was then used in regression analysis to evaluate whether temporal variability in DFC (tvDFC) could predict different dimensions of emotional experience. We observed that the connectivity patterns in the upper beta band could differentiate emotion categories better during or prior to the reported emotional experience. The temporal variability in functional connectivity dynamics is primarily related to emotional arousal followed by dominance. The hubs in the functional networks were found across the right frontal and bilateral parietal lobes, which have been reported to facilitate affect, interoception, action, and memory-related processing. Since our study was performed with naturalistic real-life resembling emotional videos, the study contributes significantly to understanding the dynamics of emotion processing. The results support constructivist theories of emotional experience and show that changes in dynamic functional connectivity can predict aspects of our emotional experience.
