Detection and differentiation of herbicide stresses in roses by Raman spectroscopy.

ABSTRACT: Herbicide application is a critical component of modern horticulture. Misuse of herbicides can result in damage to economically important plants. Currently, such damage can be detected only at symptomatic stages by subjective visual inspection of plants, which requires substantial biological expertise. In this study, we investigated the potential of Raman spectroscopy (RS), a modern analytical technique that allows sensing of plant health, for pre-symptomatic diagnostics of herbicide stresses. Using roses as a model plant system, we investigated the extent to which stresses caused by Roundup (Glyphosate) and Weed-B-Gon (2, 4-D, Dicamba and Mecoprop-p (WBG), two of the most commonly used herbicides world-wide, can be diagnosed at pre- and symptomatic stages. We found that spectroscopic anal
