In 2011, <i>Ehrlichia muris eauclairensis</i> (EME) was described as a human pathogen spread by the blacklegged tick, <i>Ixodes scapularis</i>. Until very recently, its reported distribution was limited to the upper midwestern United States, mainly in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
