Project description:Among the possible products of CO2 electrochemical reduction, CO plays a unique and vital role, which can be an ideal feedstock for further reduction to C2+ products, and also the important component of syngas that can be used as feedstock for value-added chemicals and fuels. However, it is still a challenge to tune the CO selectivity on Cu electrode. Here we newly construct an ultrasound-assisted electrochemical method for CO2 reduction, which can tune the selectivity of CO2 to CO from less than 10% to >80% at -1.18 V versus (vs.) reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). The partial current density of CO production is significantly improved by 15 times. By in-situ Raman study, the dominating factor for the improved CO production is attributed to the accelerated desorption of *CO intermediate. This work provides a facile method to tune the product selectivity in CO2 electrochemical reduction.

Project description:This work reports the synthesis of CuxSny alloy aerogels for electrochemical CO2 reduction catalysts. An in situ reduction and the subsequent freeze-drying process can successfully give CnxSny aerogels with tuneable Sn contents, and such aerogels are composed of three-dimensional architectures made from inter-connected fine nanoparticles with pores as the channels. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the introduction of Sn in Cu aerogels inhibits H2 evolution reaction (HER) activity, while the accelerated CO desorption on the catalyst surface is found at the same time. The porous structure of aerogel also favors exposing more active sites. Counting these together, with the optimized composition of Cu95Sn5 aerogel, the high selectivity of CO can be achieved with a faradaic efficiency of over 90% in a wide potential range (-0.7 V to -1.0 V vs. RHE).

Project description:Copper-based materials are known for converting CO2 into deep reduction products via electrochemical reduction reaction (CO2 RR). As the major multicarbon products (C2+ ), ethanol (C2 H5 OH) and ethylene (C2 H4 ) are believed to share a common oxygenic intermediate according to theoretical studies, while the key factors that bifurcate C2 H5 OH and C2 H4 pathways on Cu-based catalysts are not fully understood. Here, a surface oxophilicity regulation strategy to enhance C2 H5 OH production in CO2 RR is proposed, demonstrated by a Cu-Sn bimetallic system. Compared with bare Cu catalyst, the Cu-Sn bimetallic catalysts show improved C2 H5 OH but suppressed C2 H4 selectivity. The experimental results and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the surface oxophilicity of Cu-Sn catalysts plays an important role in steering the protonation of the key oxygenic intermediate and guides the reaction pathways to C2 H5 OH. This study provides new insights into the electrocatalyst design for enhanced production of oxygenic products from CO2 RR by engineering the surface oxophilicity of copper-based catalysts.

Project description:The electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CO2RR) is a sustainable alternative for producing fuels and chemicals, although the production of highly desired hydrocarbons is still a challenge due to the higher overpotential requirement in combination with the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Tailoring the electrolyte composition is a possible strategy to favor the CO2RR over the HER. In this work we studied the solvent effect on the CO2RR on a nanostructured Cu electrode in acetonitrile solvent with different amounts of water. Similar to what has been observed for aqueous media, our online gas chromatography results showed that CO2RR in acetonitrile solvent is also structure-dependent, since nanocube-covered copper (CuNC) was the only surface (in comparison to polycrystalline Cu) capable of producing a detectable amount of ethylene (10% FE), provided there is enough water present in the electrolyte (>500 mM). In situ Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed that in acetonitrile solvent the presence of CO2 strongly inhibits HER by driving away water from the interface. CO is by far the main product of CO2RR in acetonitrile (>85% Faradaic efficiency), but adsorbed CO is not detected. This suggests that in acetonitrile media CO adsorption is inhibited compared to aqueous media. Remarkably, the addition of water to acetonitrile has little quantitative and almost no qualitative effect on the activity and selectivity of the CO2RR. This indicates that water is not strongly involved in the rate-determining step of the CO2RR in acetonitrile. Only at the highest water concentrations and at the CuNC surface, the CO coverage becomes high enough that a small amount of C2+ product is formed.

Project description:Electrolyzers operate over a range of temperatures; hence, it is crucial to design electrocatalysts that do not compromise the product distribution unless temperature can promote selectivity. This work reports a synthetic approach based on electrospinning to produce NiO:SnO2 nanofibers (NFs) for selectively reducing CO2 to formate above room temperature. The NFs comprise compact but disjoined NiO and SnO2 nanocrystals identified with STEM. The results are attributed to the segregation of NiO and SnO2 confirmed with XRD. The NFs are evaluated for the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) over various temperatures (25, 30, 35, and 40 °C). The highest faradaic efficiencies to formate (FEHCOO- ) are reached by NiO:SnO2 NFs containing 50% of NiO and 50% SnO2 (NiOSnO50NF), and 25% of NiO and 75% SnO2 (NiOSnO75NF), at an electroreduction temperature of 40 °C. At 40 °C, product distribution is assessed with in situ differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS), recognizing methane and other species, like formate, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide, identified in an electrochemical flow cell. XPS and EELS unveiled the FEHCOO- variations due to a synergistic effect between Ni and Sn. DFT-based calculations reveal the superior thermodynamic stability of Ni-containing SnO2 systems towards CO2RR over the pure oxide systems. Furthermore, computational surface Pourbaix diagrams showed that the presence of Ni as a surface dopant increases the reduction of the SnO2 surface and enables the production of formate. Our results highlight the synergy between NiO and SnO2, which can promote the electroreduction of CO2 at temperatures above room temperature.

Project description:The electrochemical conversion of carbon di-/monoxide into commodity chemicals paves a way towards a sustainable society but it also presents one of the great challenges in catalysis. Herein, we present the trends in selectivity towards specific dicarbon oxygenate/hydrocarbon products from carbon monoxide reduction on transition metal catalysts, with special focus on copper. We unveil the distinctive role of electrolyte pH in tuning the dicarbon oxygenate/hydrocarbon selectivity. The understanding is based on density functional theory calculated energetics and microkinetic modeling. We identify the critical reaction steps determining selectivity and relate their transition state energies to two simple descriptors, the carbon and hydroxide binding strengths. The atomistic insight gained enables us to rationalize a number of experimental observations and provides avenues towards the design of selective electrocatalysts for liquid fuel production from carbon di-/monoxide.

Project description:Carbon-based single-atom catalysts (SACs) with well-defined and homogeneously dispersed metal-N4 moieties provide a great opportunity for CO2 reduction. However, controlling the binding strength of various reactive intermediates on catalyst surface is necessary to enhance the selectivity to a desired product, and it is still a challenge. In this work, the authors prepared Sn SACs consisting of atomically dispersed SnN3 O1 active sites supported on N-rich carbon matrix (Sn-NOC) for efficient electrochemical CO2 reduction. Contrary to the classic Sn-N4 configuration which gives HCOOH and H2 as the predominant products, Sn-NOC with asymmetric atomic interface of SnN3 O1 gives CO as the exclusive product. Experimental results and density functional theory calculations show that the atomic arrangement of SnN3 O1 reduces the activation energy for *COO and *COOH formation, while increasing energy barrier for HCOO* formation significantly, thereby facilitating CO2 -to-CO conversion and suppressing HCOOH production. This work provides a new way for enhancing the selectivity to a specific product by controlling individually the binding strength of each reactive intermediate on catalyst surface.

Project description:Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to value-added chemicals has been hindered by poor product selectivity and competition from hydrogen evolution reactions. This study aims to unravel the origin of the product selectivity and competitive hydrogen evolution reaction on [MP]0 catalysts (M = Fe, Co, Rh and Ir; P is porphyrin ligand) by analyzing the mechanism of CO2 reduction and H2 formation based on the results of density functional theory calculations. Reduction of CO2 to CO and HCOO- proceeds via the formation of carboxylate adduct ([MP-COOH]0 and ([MP-COOH]-) and metal-hydride [MP-H]-, respectively. Competing proton reduction to gaseous hydrogen shares the [MP-H]- intermediate. Our results show that the pKa of [MP-H]0 can be used as an indicator of the CO or HCOO-/H2 preference. Furthermore, an ergoneutral pH has been determined and used to determine the minimum pH at which selective CO2 reduction to HCOO- becomes favorable over the H2 production. These analyses allow us to understand the product selectivity of CO2 reduction on [FeP]0, [CoP]0, [RhP]0 and [IrP]0; [FeP]0 and [CoP]0 are selective for CO whereas [RhP]0 and [IrP]0 are selective for HCOO- while suppressing H2 formation. These descriptors should be applicable to other catalysts in an aqueous medium.

Project description:The electrocatalytic carbon dioxide (CO2 ) reduction reaction (CO2 RR) into hydrocarbons is a promising approach for greenhouse gas mitigation, but many details of this dynamic reaction remain elusive. Here, time-resolved surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TR-SERS) is employed to successfully monitor the dynamics of CO2 RR intermediates and Cu surfaces with sub-second time resolution. Anodic treatment at 1.55 V vs. RHE and subsequent surface oxide reduction (below -0.4 V vs. RHE) induced roughening of the Cu electrode surface, which resulted in hotspots for TR-SERS, enhanced time resolution (down to ≈0.7 s) and fourfold improved CO2 RR efficiency toward ethylene. With TR-SERS, the initial restructuring of the Cu surface was followed (<7 s), after which a stable surface surrounded by increased local alkalinity was formed. Our measurements revealed that a highly dynamic CO intermediate, with a characteristic vibration below 2060 cm-1 , is related to C-C coupling and ethylene production (-0.9 V vs. RHE), whereas lower cathodic bias (-0.7 V vs. RHE) resulted in gaseous CO production from isolated and static CO surface species with a distinct vibration at 2092 cm-1 .

Project description:Metal-free catalysts, such as graphene/carbon nanostructures, are highly cost-effective to replace expensive noble metals for CO2 reduction if fundamental issues, such as active sites and selectivity, are clearly understood. Using both density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio molecular dynamic calculations, we show that the interplay of N-doping and curvature can effectively tune the activity and selectivity of graphene/carbon-nanotube (CNT) catalysts. The CO2 activation barrier can be optimized to 0.58 eV for graphitic-N doped graphene edges, compared with 1.3 eV in the un-doped counterpart. The graphene catalyst without curvature shows strong selectivity for CO/HCOOH production, whereas the (6, 0) CNT with a high degree of curvature is effective for both CH3OH and HCHO production. Curvature is also very influential to tune the overpotential for a given product, e.g. from 1.5 to 0.02 V for CO production and from 1.29 to 0.49 V for CH3OH production. Hence, the graphene/CNT nanostructures offer great scope and flexibility for effective tunning of catalyst efficiency and selectivity, as shown here for CO2 reduction.
