Project description:Recent advances in redox flow batteries have made them a viable option for grid-scale energy storage, however they exhibit low energy density. One way to boost energy density is by increasing the cell potential using a nonaqueous system. Molecular engineering has proven to be an effective strategy to develop redox-active compounds with extreme potentials but these are usually challenged by resource sustainability of the newly developed redox materials. Here, we investigate the utility of phosphine oxides as anolytes with extremely negative potentials. Specifically, we found that cyclic triphenylphosphine oxide (CPO), has a highly negative potential (-2.4 V vs Fc/Fc+). Importantly, CPO is synthesized from triphenylphosphine oxide, a common industrial chemical waste with no commercial value. Structural and electrochemical characterization of the reduced radical anion showed that enhanced stability is due to cyclization or extended pi-conjugation. Importantly, mechanistic investigation into the decomposition of CPO under various solvents and electrochemical conditions allowed us to utilize an acetonitrile/DMF binary solvent system to enable a long-lived anolyte which exhibited no fade over 350 cycles. In summary, this work led to the development of a waste-derived cyclic phosphine oxide that exhibits excellent cycling stability making it an ideal anolyte toward the development of energy-dense RFBs.

Project description:It is important to study the effect of Fe(III) on the positive electrolyte, in order to provide some practical guidance for the preparation and use of vanadium electrolyte. The effect of Fe(III) on the thermal stability and electrochemical behaviour of the positive electrolyte for the vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) was investigated. When the Fe(III) concentration was above 0.0196 mol l-1, the thermal stability of V(V) electrolyte was impaired, the diffusion coefficient of V(IV) species decreased from (2.06-3.33) × 10-6 cm2 s-1 to (1.78-2.88) × 10-6 cm2 s-1, and the positive electrolyte exhibited a higher electrolyte resistance and a charge transfer resistance. Furthermore, Fe(III) could result in the side reaction and capacity fading, which would have a detrimental effect on battery application. With the increase of Fe(III), the collision probability of vanadium ions with Fe(III) and the competition with the redox reaction was aggravated, which would interfere with the electrode reaction, the diffusion of vanadium ions and the performance of VRFB. Therefore, this study provides some practical guidance that it is best to bring the impurity of Fe(III) below 0.0196 mol l-1 during the preparation and use of vanadium electrolyte.

Project description:Redox flow batteries are receiving wide attention for electrochemical energy storage due to their unique architecture and advantages, but progress has so far been limited by their low energy density (~25 Wh l(-1)). Here we report a high-energy density aqueous zinc-polyiodide flow battery. Using the highly soluble iodide/triiodide redox couple, a discharge energy density of 167 Wh l(-1) is demonstrated with a near-neutral 5.0 M ZnI2 electrolyte. Nuclear magnetic resonance study and density functional theory-based simulation along with flow test data indicate that the addition of an alcohol (ethanol) induces ligand formation between oxygen on the hydroxyl group and the zinc ions, which expands the stable electrolyte temperature window to from -20 to 50 °C, while ameliorating the zinc dendrite. With the high-energy density and its benign nature free from strong acids and corrosive components, zinc-polyiodide flow battery is a promising candidate for various energy storage applications.

Project description:Developing greener batteries with new chemistries is a formidable challenge, and a major focus for years to come. Redox flow batteries are receiving increasing research interest for grid-scale electrochemical energy storage owing to their unique architecture. However, challenges still remain by their low energy density as well as corrosive and/or toxic electrolytes. An anolyte based on aprotic Zn deep-eutectic-solvent, which uses low cost, abundant and environmentally benign materials, exhibits a utilizable concentration of Zn2+ ca. 1.7 M, resulting in a reversible volumetric capacity of ca. 90 A h·L-1. Combined with high efficiencies and relatively low redox potential of -1.12 V vs. Ag/AgCl, such an anolyte provides an alternative way to explore a family of anolytes using new chemistries for rechargeable Zn batteries that meet the criteria for grid-scale electrical energy storage.

Project description:Despite intense research in the field of aqueous organic redox flow batteries, low molecular stability of electroactive compounds limits further commercialization. Additionally, currently used methods typically cannot differentiate between individual capacity fade mechanisms, such as degradation of electroactive compound and its cross-over through the membrane. We present a more complex method for in situ evaluation of (electro)chemical stability of electrolytes using a flow electrolyser and a double half-cell including permeation measurements of electrolyte cross-over through a membrane by a UV-VIS spectrometer. The method is employed to study (electro)chemical stability of acidic negolyte based on an anthraquinone sulfonation mixture containing mainly 2,6- and 2,7-anthraquinone disulfonic acid isomers, which can be directly used as an RFB negolyte. The effect of electrolyte state of charge (SoC), current load and operating temperature on electrolyte stability is tested. The results show enhanced capacity decay for fully charged electrolyte (0.9 and 2.45% per day at 20 °C and 40 °C, respectively) while very good stability is observed at 50% SoC and lower, even at 40 °C and under current load (0.02% per day). HPLC analysis conformed deep degradation of AQ derivatives connected with the loss of aromaticity. The developed method can be adopted for stability evaluation of electrolytes of various organic and inorganic RFB chemistries.

Project description:Aqueous organic redox flow batteries (AORFBs) hold great promise as low-cost, environmentally friendly and safe alternative energy storage media. Here we present aqueous organometallic and all-organic active materials for RFBs with a water-soluble active material, sulfonated tryptanthrin (TRYP-SO3H), working at a neutral pH and showing long-term stability. Electrochemical measurements show that TRYP-SO3H displays reversible peaks at neutral pH values, allowing its use as an anolyte combined with potassium ferrocyanide or 4,5-dihydroxy-1,3-benzenedisulfonic acid disodium salt monohydrate as catholytes. Single cell tests show reproducible charge-discharge cycles for both catholytes, with significantly improved results for the aqueous all-organic RFB reaching high cell voltage (0.94 V) and high energy efficiencies, stabilized during at least 50 working cycles.

Project description:Organic redox compounds represent an emerging class of active materials for organic redox-flow batteries (RFBs), which are highly desirable for sustainable electrical energy storage. The structural diversity of organic redox compounds helps in tuning the electrochemical properties as compared to the case of their inorganic counterparts. However, the structural diversity makes the design and identification of redox-active organic materials difficult because it is challenging to achieve appropriate redox potential, solubility and stability together, which are the major concerns regarding the practical applicability of these materials to RFBs. Herein, we report the design, synthesis, and application of viologen molecules as anolyte materials for organic RFBs that are compatible with Li-ion electrolytes. Structural screening assisted by density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggests that the (CH2)5CH3-substituted viologen molecule exhibits reduction potential as low as 2.74 V vs. Li/Li+, good structural stability due to effective charge delocalization within the two pyridinium rings, and a solubility of up to 1.3 M in carbonate-based electrolytes. When paired with a 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine-iron complex catholyte, the cell shows a high discharge voltage of 1.3-1.5 V with coulombic efficiency > 98% and energy efficiency > 84%. Both the anolyte and catholyte materials are built from earth-abundant elements and can be produced with high yields; thus, they may represent a promising choice for sustainable electrical energy storage.

Project description:Energy storage systems are crucial in the deployment of renewable energies. As one of the most promising solutions, redox flow batteries (RFBs) are still hindered for practical applications by low energy density, high cost, and environmental concerns. To breakthrough the fundamental solubility limit that restricts boosting energy density of the cell, we here demonstrate a new RFB system employing polysulfide and high concentrated ferricyanide (up to 1.6 M) species as reactants. The RFB cell exhibits high cell performances with capacity retention of 96.9% after 1,500 cycles and low reactant cost of $32.47/kWh. Moreover, neutral aqueous electrolytes are environmentally benign and cost-effective. A cell stack is assembled and exhibits low capacity fade rate of 0.021% per cycle over 642 charging-discharging steps (spans 60 days). This neutral polysulfide/ferricyanide RFB technology with high safety, long-duration, low cost, and feasibility of scale-up is an innovative design for storing massive energy.

Project description:Development of non-aqueous redox flow batteries as a viable energy storage solution relies upon the identification of soluble charge carriers capable of storing large amounts of energy over extended time periods. A combination of metrics including number of electrons stored per molecule, redox potential, stability, and solubility of the charge carrier impact performance. In this context, we recently reported a 2,2'-bipyrimidine charge carrier that stores two electrons per molecule with reduction near -2.0 V vs. Fc/Fc+ and high stability. However, these first-generation derivatives showed a modest solubility of 0.17 M (0.34 M e-). Seeking to improve solubility without sacrificing stability, we harnessed the synthetic modularity of this scaffold to design a library of sixteen candidates. Using computed molecular descriptors and a single node decision tree, we found that minimization of the solvent accessible surface area (SASA) can be used to predict derivatives with enhanced solubility. This parameter was used in combination with a heatmap describing stability to de-risk a virtual screen that ultimately identified a 2,2'-bipyrimidine with significantly increased solubility and good stability metrics in the reduced states. This molecule was paired with a cyclopropenium catholyte in a prototype all-organic redox flow battery, achieving a cell potential up to 3 V.
