Complete Genome Sequence of Cronobacter dublinensis Bacteriophage vB_Cdu_VP8.

ABSTRACT: Cronobacter dublinensis is a Gram-negative pathogen that is capable of causing infection in humans. In this announcement, we describe the characterization of bacteriophage vB_Cdu_VP8, which is able to lyse a Cronobacter dublinensis strain. Related to phages belonging to the genus Muldoonvirus, such as Muldoon and SP1, vB_Cdu_VP8 contains 264 predicted protein-coding genes and 3 tRNAs.

Project description:Due to the high risk of Cronobacter sakazakii infection in infants fed powdered milk formula and the emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains, an alternative biocontrol agent using bacteriophage is needed to control this pathogen. To further the development of such an agent, the C. sakazakii-targeting bacteriophage CR3 was isolated and its genome was completely sequenced. Here, we announce the genomic analysis results of the largest C. sakazakii phage known to date and report the major findings from the genome annotation.

Complete genome sequence of Cronobacter sakazakii bacteriophage vB_CsaM_GAP161.

Project description:Cronobacter sakazakii is an opportunistic pathogen that causes infant meningitis and is often associated with milk-based infant formula. We have fully sequenced the genome of a newly isolated lytic C. sakazakii myovirus, vB_CsaM_GAP161, briefly named GAP161. It consists of 178,193 bp and has a G+C content of 44.5%. A total of 277 genes, including 275 open reading frames and two tRNA-encoding genes, were identified. This phage is closely related to coliphages RB16 and RB43 and Klebsiella pneumoniae phage KP15.

Complete genome sequence of Cronobacter sakazakii temperate bacteriophage phiES15.

Project description:While most phage genome studies have been focused on the virulent phages, the inducible temperate bacteriophage genome study provides more detailed information about the interaction between the host strain and the phage. To study this interaction in detail, UV-induced phiES15 bacteriophage was isolated from the host strain Cronobacter sakazakii ES15 and its genome was completely sequenced. Here we announce the genome sequence of phiES15 and report major findings from the annotation.

Project description:We characterized the complete genome sequence of Siphoviridae bacteriophage Erla, an obligatory lytic subcluster EA1 bacteriophage infecting Microbacterium foliorum NRRL B-24224, with a capsid width of 65 nm and a tail length of 112 nm. The 41.5-kb genome, encompassing 62 predicted protein-coding genes, is highly similar (99.52% identity) to that of bacteriophage Calix.

Project description:Salmonella bacteriophage SPN3US was isolated from a chicken fecal sample. It is a virulent phage belonging to the Myoviridae family and showing effective inhibition of Salmonella enterica and a few Escherichia coli O157:H7 strains. Here we announce the completely sequenced first genome of a Salmonella phage using flagella as receptors. It is the largest genome among Salmonella phages sequenced to date, and major findings from its annotation are described.

Complete genome sequence of enterococcal bacteriophage SAP6.

Project description:Enterococcus faecalis is an important bacterium for use as a probiotic and is an opportunistic pathogen in human beings. The antibiotic resistance acquired by E. faecalis is restricted to antibiotics used in the clinical setting. While screening for alternative antibiotics for use against multidrug-resistant E. faecalis, we isolated a virulent enterococcal bacteriophage, SAP6, belonging to the family Siphoviridae. To our knowledge, this study is the first to report the complete genome sequence of bacteriophage SAP6, which might be used as a therapeutic agent in combination with alternative antibiotics for multidrug-resistant E. faecalis.

Project description:We previously isolated EFDG1, a lytic phage against enterococci for therapeutic use. Nevertheless, EFDG1-resistant bacterial strains (EFDG1(r)) have evolved. EFLK1, a new highly effective phage against EFDG1(r) strains, was isolated in this study. The genome of EFLK1 was fully sequenced, analyzed, and deposited in GenBank.
