Draft Genome Sequences of Pseudomonas sp. Strains Isolated from Wheat in Germany.

Project description:Three chloramphenicol-resistant Pseudomonas sp. strains were isolated from wheat grain in Germany on rose Bengal agar. The draft genome sizes ranged from 5,924,931 to 6,124,470 bp. All the isolates possessed genes for efflux pumps that might be responsible for an intrinsic chloramphenicol resistance. No acquired antibiotic resistance genes in these strains could be determined.

Project description:The genus Saccharibacter is currently understudied, with only one described species, Saccharibacter floricola, isolated from a flower. In an effort to better understand the microbes that come in contact with native bee pollinators, we isolated and sequenced four additional strains of Saccharibacter from native bees in the genera Melissodes and Anthophora These genomes range in size from 2,104,494 to 2,316,791 bp (mean, 2,246,664 bp) and contain between 1,860 and 2,167 (mean, 2,060) protein-coding genes.

All these are closely related to Vibrio alginolyticus. Their comparative genome information is useful for studies of TTX production in bacteria.

Identity, Prevalence, and Pathogenicity of Entomopathogenic Fungi Infecting Invasive Polistes (Vespidae: Polistinae) Paper Wasps in New Zealand.

Project description:Two species of entomogenous fungi were discovered infecting the invasive paper wasp Polistes chinensis during an ecological study on Farewell Spit, New Zealand. We sequenced two nuclear ribosomal RDNA genes, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and the small ribosomal subunit 18S, and one protein-coding gene, the translation elongation factor 1-alpha (ef1 α). Combining sequence information with morphological examination, we identified these species as Beauveria malawiensis and Ophiocordyceps humbertii. We estimated that these fungi produce infection in approximately 3.3% of colonies in our study population. In bioassays, we successfully infected P. chinensis individuals from healthy colonies with B. malawiensis, with significant effects on adult mortality. This is the first record of both B. malawiensis and O. humbertii from Polistine hosts in New Zealand, and the first investigation into disease causality by these pathogens in P. chinensis. Our findings may contribute to the future development of biological control agents for paper wasps in New Zealand and elsewhere around the world.

Draft Genome Sequences of Rhodococcus sp. Strains YH1 and T7, Isolated from Explosive-Contaminated Environments.

Project description:We report the draft genome sequences for Rhodococcus sp. strains YH1 and T7. These strains are both capable of degrading hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) and were isolated from explosive-contaminated soil and groundwater, respectively. Further genomic analysis might facilitate an understanding of the degradation of RDX and will contribute to the development of bioremediation methods for polluted soil and groundwater.
