Evanescent wave in multiple slit diffraction and n-array antennas in metamaterial using Cesaro convergence.

ABSTRACT: In this paper, we study Multiple slit diffraction and n- array linear antennae in negative refractive index material. We show that the evanescent wave plays a vital role in the near-field term. The evanescent wave grows significantly, unlike in conventional materials, and satisfies a novel kind of convergence known as Cesàro convergence. We calculate the intensity of multiple slits and the antenna's amplification factor (AF) in terms of the Riemann zeta function. We further demonstrate that the Riemann zeta function gives rise to additional nulls. We deduce that all the diffraction scenarios in which the traveling wave satisfies the geometric series in the medium of the positive refractive index will enhance the evanescent wave, which satisfies Cesàro convergence in the medium of the negative refractive index.

Project description:The polarization anomaly refers to the polarization transition from longitudinal to shear modes along an equi-frequency contour of the same branch, which occurs only in some anisotropic elastic media, but the lack of natural materials exhibiting desired anisotropy makes its utilization impossible for potential novel applications. In this paper, we present a unique, non-resonant type elastic metamaterial made of off-centered, double-slit unit cells. We show that its wave polarization characteristics that determine the desired anomalous polarization for a certain application are tailorable. As an application, a mode converting wedge that transforms pure longitudinal into pure shear modes is designed by the proposed metamaterial. The physics involved in the mode conversion is investigated by simulations and experiments.

Glucose level detection using millimetre-wave metamaterial-inspired resonator.

Project description:Millimetre-wave frequencies are promising for sensitive detection of glucose levels in the blood, where the temperature effect is insignificant. All these features provide the feasibility of continuous, portable, and accurate monitoring of glucose levels. This paper presents a metamaterial-inspired resonator comprising five split-rings to detect glucose levels at 24.9 GHz. The plexiglass case containing blood is modelled on the sensor's surface and the structure is simulated for the glucose levels in blood from 50 mg/dl to 120 mg/dl. The novelty of the sensor is demonstrated by the capability to sense the normal glucose levels at millimetre-wave frequencies. The dielectric characteristics of the blood are modelled by using the Debye parameters. The proposed design can detect small changes in the dielectric properties of blood caused by varying glucose levels. The variation in the transmission coefficient for each glucose level tested in this study is determined by the quality factor and resonant frequency. The sensor presented can detect the change in the quality factor of transmission response up to 2.71/mg/dl. The sensor's performance has also been tested to detect diabetic hyperosmolar syndrome. The sensor showed a linear shift in resonant frequency with the change in glucose levels, and an R2 of 0.9976 was obtained by applying regression analysis. Thus, the sensor can be used to monitor glucose in a normal range as well as at extreme levels.

Broadband Lamb wave trapping in cellular metamaterial plates with multiple local resonances.

Project description:We have investigated the Lamb wave propagation in cellular metamaterial plates constructed by bending-dominated and stretch-dominated unit-cells with the stiffness differed by orders of magnitude at an ultralow density. The simulation results show that ultralight metamaterial plates with textured stubs deposited on the surface can support strong local resonances for both symmetric and anti-symmetric modes at low frequencies, where Lamb waves at the resonance frequencies are highly localized in the vibrating stubs. The resonance frequency is very sensitive to the geometry of textured stubs. By reasonable design of the geometry of resonant elements, we establish a simple loaded-bar model with the array of oscillators having a gradient relative density (or weight) that can support multiple local resonances, which permits the feasibility of a broadband Lamb wave trapping. Our study could be potentially significant in designing ingenious weight-efficient acoustic devices for practical applications, such as shock absorption, cushioning, and vibrations traffic, etc.

Directional light beams by design from electrically driven elliptical slit antennas.

Project description:We report on the low-energy, electrical generation of light beams in specific directions from planar elliptical microstructures. The emission direction of the beam is determined by the microstructure eccentricity. A very simple, broadband, optical antenna design is used, which consists of a single elliptical slit etched into a gold film. The light beam source is driven by an electrical nanosource of surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) that is located at one focus of the ellipse. In this study, SPPs are generated through inelastic electron tunneling between a gold surface and the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope.

Rapid detection of cocaine using aptamer-based biosensor on an evanescent wave fibre platform.

Project description:The rapid detection of cocaine has received considerable attention because of the instantaneous and adverse effects of cocaine overdose on human health. Aptamer-based biosensors for cocaine detection have been well established for research and application. However, reducing the analytic duration without deteriorating the sensitivity still remains as a challenge. Here, we proposed an aptamer-based evanescent wave fibre (EWF) biosensor to rapidly detect cocaine in a wide working range. At first, the aptamers were conjugated to complementary DNA with fluorescence tag and such conjugants were then immobilized on magnetic beads. After cocaine was introduced to compete against the aptamer-DNA conjugants, the released DNA in supernatant was detected on the EWF platform. The dynamic curves of EWF signals could be interpreted by the first-order kinetics and saturation model. The semi-log calibration curve covered a working range of 10-5000 µM of cocaine, and the limit of detection was approximately 10.5 µM. The duration of the full procedure was 990 s (16.5 min), and the detection interval was 390 s (6.5 min). The specified detection of cocaine was confirmed from four typical pharmaceutic agents. The analysis was repeated for 50 cycles without significant loss of sensitivity. Therefore, the aptamer-based EWF biosensor is a feasible solution to rapidly detect cocaine.

Graphene-Based Analog of Single-Slit Electron Diffraction.

Project description:This work reports the experimental demonstration of single-slit diffraction exhibited by electrons propagating in encapsulated graphene with an effective de Broglie wavelength corresponding to their attributes as massless Dirac fermions. Nanometer-scale device designs were implemented to fabricate a single-slit followed by five detector paths. Predictive calculations were also utilized to readily understand the observations reported. These calculations required the modeling of wave propagation in ideal case scenarios of the reported device designs to more accurately describe the observed single-slit phenomenon. This experiment was performed at room temperature and 190 K, where data from the latter highlighted the exaggerated asymmetry between electrons and holes, recently ascribed to slightly different Fermi velocities near the K point. This observation and device concept may be used for building diffraction switches with versatile applicability.

Calibrating Evanescent-Wave Penetration Depths for Biological TIRF Microscopy.

Project description:Roughly half of a cell's proteins are located at or near the plasma membrane. In this restricted space, the cell senses its environment, signals to its neighbors, and exchanges cargo through exo- and endocytotic mechanisms. Ligands bind to receptors, ions flow across channel pores, and transmitters and metabolites are transported against concentration gradients. Receptors, ion channels, pumps, and transporters are the molecular substrates of these biological processes, and they constitute important targets for drug discovery. Total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy suppresses the background from the cell's deeper layers and provides contrast for selectively imaging dynamic processes near the basal membrane of live cells. The optical sectioning of TIRF is based on the excitation confinement of the evanescent wave generated at the glass/cell interface. How deep the excitation light actually penetrates the sample is difficult to know, making the quantitative interpretation of TIRF data problematic. Nevertheless, many applications like superresolution microscopy, colocalization, Förster resonance energy transfer, near-membrane fluorescence recovery after photobleaching, uncaging or photoactivation/switching as well as single-particle tracking require the quantitative interpretation of evanescent-wave-excited images. Here, we review existing techniques for characterizing evanescent fields, and we provide a roadmap for comparing TIRF data across images, experiments, and laboratories.

Arbitrary aperture synthesis with nonlocal leaky-wave metasurface antennas.

Project description:The emergence of new technological needs in 5 G/6 G networking and broadband satellite internet access amplifies the demand for innovative wireless communication hardware, including high-performance low-profile transceivers. In this context, antennas based on metasurfaces - artificial surfaces engineered to manipulate electromagnetic waves at will - represent highly promising solutions. In this article, we introduce leaky-wave metasurface antennas operating at micro/millimeter-wave frequencies that are designed using the principles of quasi-bound states in the continuum, exploiting judiciously tailored spatial symmetries that enable fully customized radiation. Specifically, we unveil additional degrees of control over leaky-wave radiation by demonstrating pointwise control of the amplitude, phase and polarization state of the metasurface aperture fields by carefully breaking relevant symmetries with tailored perturbations. We design and experimentally demonstrate metasurface antenna prototypes showcasing a variety of functionalities advancing capabilities in wireless communications, including single-input multi-output and multi-input multi-output near-field focusing, as well as far-field beam shaping.

Phased-array sources based on nonlinear metamaterial nanocavities.

Project description:Coherent superposition of light from subwavelength sources is an attractive prospect for the manipulation of the direction, shape and polarization of optical beams. This phenomenon constitutes the basis of phased arrays, commonly used at microwave and radio frequencies. Here we propose a new concept for phased-array sources at infrared frequencies based on metamaterial nanocavities coupled to a highly nonlinear semiconductor heterostructure. Optical pumping of the nanocavity induces a localized, phase-locked, nonlinear resonant polarization that acts as a source feed for a higher-order resonance of the nanocavity. Varying the nanocavity design enables the production of beams with arbitrary shape and polarization. As an example, we demonstrate two second harmonic phased-array sources that perform two optical functions at the second harmonic wavelength (∼5 μm): a beam splitter and a polarizing beam splitter. Proper design of the nanocavity and nonlinear heterostructure will enable such phased arrays to span most of the infrared spectrum.

Rapid, Sensitive On-Site Detection of Deoxynivalenol in Cereals Using Portable and Reusable Evanescent Wave Optofluidic Immunosensor.

Project description:This paper develops an improved portable and reusable evanescent wave optofluidic immunosensor (OIP-v2) for rapid and sensitive on-site determination of deoxynivalenol (DON), one of the most frequently detected mycotoxins mainly produced by Fusarium species. Using the bifunctional reagent N,N'-Disuccinimidyl carbonate, deoxynivalenol-bovine-serum-albumin (DON-BSA) were covalently modified onto a bio-probe surface as biorecognition elements, whose robustness allowed it to perform multiple detections without significant activity loss. An indirect competitive immunoassay strategy was applied for DON detection. Under optimal conditions, the limit of detection of 0.11 μg/L and the linear dynamic detection range of 0.43 to 36.61 μg/L was obtained when the concentration of the Cy5.5-anti-DON antibody was 0.25 μg/mL. The OIP-v2 was also applied to detect DON in various cereals, and the recoveries ranged from 81% to 127%. The correlation between OIP-v2 and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) through the simultaneous detection of maize-positive samples was in good agreement (R2 = 0.9891).
