Immigration from Africa to the United States: key insights from recent research.

ABSTRACT: Immigration from Africa to the United States has increased dramatically in the past three decades. This paper summarizes recent findings on the growth of African immigration to the United States in recent years. In doing so, it highlights shifting sociodemographic profiles of these "new African Americans" or "new Americans," profiling the increasing diversity, yet also racialized portrait of this group. Key patterns of immigration shown include the changing racial and gender composition of immigrants, as well as rising immigration from a wider range of African countries. Some key theoretical and practical implications are outlined.

Immigration and the Wage Distribution in the United States.

Project description:This article assesses the connection between immigration and wage inequality in the United States. Departing from the focus on how the average wages of different native groups respond to immigration, we examine how immigrants shape the overall wage distribution. Despite evidence indicating that an increased presence of low-skilled immigrants is associated with losses at the lower end of wage distribution, we do not observe a similar result between high-skilled immigrants and natives at the upper end. Instead, the presence of foreign-born workers, whether high- or low-skilled, is associated with substantial gains for high-wage natives, particularly those at the very top. Consequently, increased immigration is associated with greater wage dispersion.

Suicide rates of migrants in United States immigration detention (2010-2020).

Project description:ObjectiveWe determined the annual suicide rate of migrants detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the past decade.MethodsWe performed a retrospective cohort analysis of the annual suicide rates for ICE detainees from federal fiscal years (FY) 2010-2020. Death date and cause of death were directly extracted from publicly available ICE Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Library, ICE death reports, and ICE press releases. Annual suicide rates were calculated as suicides per 100,000 person-years and suicides per 100,000 admissions.ResultsFrom 2010-2019, the mean number of suicides per 100,000 person-years was 3.3 (standard deviation (SD): 2.6). In 2020, the suicide rate increased 5.3 times the prior 10-year average to 17.4 suicides per 100,000 person-years. When calculating suicide rate based on admissions per FY, the mean number of suicides from 2010-2019 per 100,000 admissions was 0.3 (SD: 0.3). In 2020, the suicide rate increased 11.0 times the prior 10-year average to 3.4 suicides per 100,000 admissions.ConclusionIn 2020, the detainee suicide rate increased substantially compared to the past decade. This may point to a worsening mental health crisis in ICE detention.

Intimate Partner Violence and Immigration in the United States: A Systematic Review.

Project description:This systematic review sought to describe the prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization among immigrants in the United States (U.S.) and the prevalence of IPV perpetration among immigrants in the U.S. PsycInfo, PubMed, Global Health and Scopus databases were searched for peer-reviewed literature that quantitatively examined IPV in relation to immigration. Twenty-four articles were included in the final review. Past-year IPV victimization rates among immigrants ranged from 3.8% to 46.9% and lifetime IPV victimization rates ranged from 13.9% to 93%; past-year IPV perpetration rates ranged from 3.0% to 24.8% and the one lifetime IPV perpetration rate was 12.8%. Estimates varied widely by country of origin, type of violence measured, and measure used to quantify IPV. Reliance on small convenience samples is problematic when trying to determine the true prevalence of IPV among immigrants. Epidemiological research is needed to improve the accuracy and representativeness of findings.

Osteoarthritis - Insights From Recent Research.

Project description:Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis and is a growing public health concern in the aging society. In rapidly aging societies such as in Korea, the increasing prevalence of OA may present serious new health issues. There is no treatment for OA that can either prevent or slow the progression of joint damage. For the development of effective therapeutics, precise understating of its pathogenesis is important. In this review, the current evidence of etiopathogenesis of OA is discussed. First, while epidemiologic study of OA are still dominated by reports from Western countries, findings from Korean epidemiologic studies are highlighted. Then, recent progresses in genetics, especially in the field of genome wide association study and mendelian randomization studies, are reviewed with focus on Asian population. Lastly, sex difference in pain etopathogenesis is reviewed. Studies of OA pathogenesis including epidemiology, genetics, animal model and pain signaling will aid in progress towards treatment of OA.

Recent Transmission of Tuberculosis - United States, 2011-2014.

Project description:Tuberculosis is an infectious disease that may result from recent transmission or from an infection acquired many years in the past; there is no diagnostic test to distinguish the two causes. Cases resulting from recent transmission are particularly concerning from a public health standpoint. To describe recent tuberculosis transmission in the United States, we used a field-validated plausible source-case method to estimate cases likely resulting from recent transmission during January 2011-September 2014. We classified cases as resulting from either limited or extensive recent transmission based on transmission cluster size. We used logistic regression to analyze patient characteristics associated with recent transmission. Of 26,586 genotyped cases, 14% were attributable to recent transmission, 39% of which were attributable to extensive recent transmission. The burden of cases attributed to recent transmission was geographically heterogeneous and poorly predicted by tuberculosis incidence. Extensive recent transmission was positively associated with American Indian/Alaska Native (adjusted prevalence ratio [aPR] = 3.6 (95% confidence interval [CI] 2.9-4.4), Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (aPR = 3.2, 95% CI 2.3-4.5), and black (aPR = 3.0, 95% CI 2.6-3.5) race, and homelessness (aPR = 2.3, 95% CI 2.0-2.5). Extensive recent transmission was negatively associated with foreign birth (aPR = 0.2, 95% CI 0.2-0.2). Tuberculosis control efforts should prioritize reducing transmission among higher-risk populations.

The impact of immigration on hepatitis B burden in the United States: a modelling study.

Project description:BackgroundThe 2016 World Health Assembly endorsed the elimination of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections by 2030. However, the HBV prevalence in Western countries, where the historical prevalence is low and highly impacted by immigration trends, remains uncertain making planning difficult. We aimed to develop a more accurate estimate of HBV prevalence and identify key immigrant populations that need to be screened, vaccinated, and treated to achieve the elimination targets.MethodsUS immigration data from 1900 forward and country-specific modeled prevalence by age and sex were used to estimate immigrated HBV infections entering the US, new infections in the US, mortality (all-cause and liver-related), and disease burden through 2030.FindingsUsing a dynamic Markov model, we estimated 1.8 million (95% uncertainty interval: 1.3-2.6 million) HBV infections in 2020 in all ages, higher than the NHANES national serosurvey. Infections between ages 30-74 accounted for 82% of all cases. Furthermore, HBV infections were concentrated among immigrants. New decompensated cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and liver related deaths are expected to increase by 20%, 31% and 25% respectively from 2019 to 2030 at current diagnosis and treatment rate.InterpretationNational serosurveys can underestimate total infections due to under-sampling in immigrant populations. To meet the WHO elimination targets, culturally appropriate screening and linkage to care programs in the immigrant populations are needed in the US. Factor Structures of Reasons for Immigration Among Older Asian and Latino Immigrants in the United States.

Project description:Backgrounds and objectivesAlthough reasons for immigration are significant predictors of immigrants' health, factor structures of reasons for immigration are still unclear among older immigrants. The present study examined the factor structure of reasons for immigration among older Asian and Latino immigrants in the United States.Research design and methodsDrawn from the National Latino and Asian American Study, 396 Latino and 298 Asian immigrants over 55 years of age were selected for analysis. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted for nine items concerning reasons for immigration in each immigrant group.ResultsThree factors were extracted from both Asian and Latino immigrant elders: (a) "voluntary reasons" to pursue development, (b) "involuntary reasons" due to uncontrollable situations, and (c) "semivoluntary reasons" regarding family/medical duties. While immigration to join family members was located in the "semivoluntary reasons" factor among older Asian immigrants, it was located in the "voluntary reasons" factor among older Latino immigrants.Discussion and implicationsThese findings suggest that three underlying factors of reasons for immigration should be understood considering the different characteristics of two racial/ethnic groups of immigrants. In addition, a migratory reason to join the family should be considered differently for elderly Asian and Latino immigrants. This three-factor framework of reasons for immigration can help clinicians provide more culturally sensitive interventions for older minority immigrants.

Recent Trends in Diabetes-Associated Hospitalizations in the United States.

Project description:The purpose of this study was to examine trends in diabetes-related hospitalizations over the period 2010 to 2019 using Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) to facilitate informed policies regarding diabetes-related prevention and management. Between 2010 and 2019, there were 304 million hospitalizations above 18 years of age, of which 78 million were diabetes-associated hospitalizations. The overall population-adjusted diabetes hospitalizations significantly increased from 3079.0 to 3280.8 per 100,000 US population (relative increase, 6.6%, Ptrend < 0.028). Age-stratified analysis showed that hospitalizations significantly increased for 18-29 years (relative increase, 7.8%, Ptrend < 0.001) while age- and gender-stratified analysis showed that diabetes hospitalization significantly increased for 18-29-year males (relative increase, 18.1%, Ptrend < 0.001). Total hospitalization charge increased from 97.5 billion USD in 2010 to 132.0 billion USD in 2019 (relative increase, 35.4%, Ptrend < 0.001). Our study's findings suggest that diabetes-associated hospitalizations will continue to increase in the future because recent evidence indicates a reappearance of diabetes complications. It is important to screen, prevent, and control diabetes at a younger age based on the trends observed in our study.

State-level immigration and immigrant-focused policies as drivers of Latino health disparities in the United States.

Project description:There has been a great deal of state-level legislative activity focused on immigration and immigrants over the past decade in the United States. Some policies aim to improve access to education, transportation, benefits, and additional services while others constrain such access. From a social determinants of health perspective, social and economic policies are intrinsically health policies, but research on the relationship between state-level immigration-related policies and Latino health remains scarce. This paper summarizes the existing evidence about the range of state-level immigration policies that affect Latino health, indicates conceptually plausible but under-explored relationships between policy domains and Latino health, traces the mechanisms through which immigration policies might shape Latino health, and points to key areas for future research. We examined peer-reviewed publications from 1986 to 2016 and assessed 838 based on inclusion criteria; 40 were included for final review. These 40 articles identified four pathways through which state-level immigration policies may influence Latino health: through stress related to structural racism; by affecting access to beneficial social institutions, particularly education; by affecting access to healthcare and related services; and through constraining access to material conditions such as food, wages, working conditions, and housing. Our review demonstrates that the field of immigration policy and health is currently dominated by a "one-policy, one-level, one-outcome" approach. We argue that pursuing multi-sectoral, multi-level, and multi-outcome research will strengthen and advance the existing evidence base on immigration policy and Latino health.
