Many bacterial and archaeal viruses encode anti-CRISPR proteins (Acrs) that specifically inhibit CRISPR-Cas systems via various mechanisms. The majority of the Acrs are small, non-enzymatic proteins that abrogate CRISPR activity by binding to Cas effector proteins.
