Project description:Well-aligned TiO2 nanotube arrays have become of increasing significance because of their unique highly ordered array structure, high specific surface area, unidirectional charge transfer and transportation features. However, their poor visible light utilization as well as the high recombination rate of photoexcited electron-hole pairs greatly limited their practical applications. Herein, we demonstrate the fabrication of visible-light-responsive heterostructured Cr-doped SrTiO3/TiO2 nanotube arrays by a simple hydrothermal method, which facilitate efficient charge separation and thus improve the photoelectrochemical as well as photocatalytic performances.

Project description:Due to integrated advances in photoelectrochemical (PEC) functionalities for environment detection applications, one-dimensional (1D) TiO2 nanostructures provide a new strategy (PEC sensors) towards organics detection in wastewater. However, the unidealized selectivity to the oxidation of water and organics limits the PEC detection performance. Herein, we designed a ternary photoanode consisting of Ag2O-AgBiO3/TiO2 nanotube arrays (NTAs) to solve this issue by using a facile one-step precipitation reaction. High oxidation capacity for organics is achieved by regulating the surface free radicals properly through the heterostructure formed between the interface of TiO2 and AgBiO3. More importantly, as a trap for electron capture, Ag2O in this ternary system could not only further improve the separation efficiency of charge carriers, but also capture electrons transferred to the TiO2 conduction band, thus reducing the electrons transferred to the external circuit and the corresponding background photocurrent when detecting organics. As a result, the reconstructed TiO2 NTAs decrease their photocurrent response to water and enhance their response to organics, thus presenting lower oxidation activity to water and higher activity to organics, that is, highly selective oxidation characteristics. This work provides more insights into the impact of charge transfer and surface free radicals on developing promising and efficient PEC sensors for organics.

Project description:BiVO4 as a promising semiconductor absorber is widely investigated as photoanode in photoelectrochemical water splitting. Herein, the rational design of 3D hierarchical ternary SnO2/TiO2/BiVO4 arrays is reported as photoanode for photoelectrochemical application, in which the SnO2 hierarchically hollow microspheres core/nanosheets shell arrays act as conductive skeletons, while the sandwiched TiO2 and surface BiVO4 are working as hole blocking layer and light absorber, respectively. Arising to the hierarchically ordered structure and synergistic effect between each component in the composite, the ternary SnO2/TiO2/BiVO4 photoanode enables high light harvesting efficiency as well as enhanced charge transport and separation efficiency, yielding a maximum photocurrent density of ≈5.03 mA cm-2 for sulfite oxidation and ≈3.1 mA cm-2 for water oxidation, respectively, measured at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode under simulated air mass (AM) 1.5 solar light illumination. The results reveal that electrode design and interface engineering play important roles on the overall PEC performance.

Project description:Ideally hexagonally ordered TiO2 nanotube layers were produced through the optimized anodization of Ti substrates. The Ti substrates were firstly covered with a TiN protecting layer prepared through atomic layer deposition (ALD). Pre-texturing of the TiN-protected Ti substrate on an area of 20×20 μm2 was carried out by focused ion beam (FIB) milling, yielding uniform nanoholes with a hexagonal arrangement throughout the TiN layer with three different interpore distances. The subsequent anodic nanotube growth using ethylene-glycol-based electrolyte followed the pre-textured nanoholes, resulting in perfectly ordered nanotube layers (resembling honeycomb porous anodic alumina) without any point defects and with a thickness of approximately 2 μm over the whole area of the pattern.

Project description:Using magnetron sputtering and heat treatment, Ag@TiO2 nanotubes are prepared. The effects of heat-treatment temperature and heating time on the evolution of Ag nanofilms on the surface of TiO2 nanotubes and microstructure of Ag nanofilms are investigated by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Ag atoms migrate mainly on the outmost surface of the TiO2 nanotubes, and fast diffusion of Ag atoms is observed. The diffusivity for the diffusion of Ag atoms on the outmost surface of the TiO2 nanotubes at 400 °C is 6.87 × 10(-18) m(2)/s, which is three orders of magnitude larger than the diffusivities for the diffusion of Ag through amorphous TiO2 films. The activation energy for the diffusion of Ag atoms on the outmost surface of the TiO2 nanotubes in the temperature range of 300 to 500 °C is 157 kJ/mol, which is less than that for the lattice diffusion of Ag and larger than that for the grain boundary diffusion. The diffusion of Ag atoms leads to the formation of Ag nanocrystals on the outmost surface of TiO2 nanotubes. Probably there are hardly any Ag nanocrystals formed inside the TiO2 nanotubes through the migration of Ag.

Project description:Vertically oriented, self-organized TiO₂-MnO₂ nanotube arrays were successfully obtained by one-step anodic oxidation of Ti-Mn alloys in an ethylene glycol-based electrolyte. The as-prepared samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), UV-Vis absorption, photoluminescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and micro-Raman spectroscopy. The effect of the applied potential (30-50 V), manganese content in the alloy (5-15 wt. %) and water content in the electrolyte (2-10 vol. %) on the morphology and photocatalytic properties was investigated for the first time. The photoactivity was assessed in the toluene removal reaction under visible light, using low-powered LEDs as an irradiation source (λmax = 465 nm). Morphology analysis showed that samples consisted of auto-aligned nanotubes over the surface of the alloy, their dimensions were: diameter = 76-118 nm, length = 1.0-3.4 μm and wall thickness = 8-11 nm. It was found that the increase in the applied potential led to increase the dimensions while the increase in the content of manganese in the alloy brought to shorter nanotubes. Notably, all samples were photoactive under the influence of visible light and the highest degradation achieved after 60 min of irradiation was 43%. The excitation mechanism of TiO₂-MnO₂ NTs under visible light was presented, pointing out the importance of MnO₂ species for the generation of e- and h⁺.

Project description:A plasmonic Ag/TiO2 photocatalytic composite was designed by selecting Ag quantum dots (Ag QDs) to act as a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) photosensitizer for driving the visible-light driven photoelectrocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Vertically oriented hierarchical TiO2 nanotube arrays (H-TiO2-NTAs) with macroporous structure were prepared through a two-step method based on electrochemical anodization. Subsequently, Ag QDs, with tunable size (1.3-21.0 nm), could be uniformly deposited on the H-TiO2 NTAs by current pulsing approach. The unique structure of the as-obtained photoelectrodes greatly improved the photoelectric conversion efficiency. The as-obtained Ag/H-TiO2-NTAs exhibited strong visible-light absorption capability, high photocurrent density, and enhanced photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) activity toward photoelectrocatalytic hydrogen evolution under visible-light irradiation (λ>420 nm). The enhancement in the photoelectric conversion efficiency and activity was ascribed to the synergistic effects of silver and the unique hierarchical structures of TiO2 nanotube arrays, strong SPR effect, and anti-shielding effect of ultrafine Ag QDs.

Project description:This study used iron modified titanate nanotube arrays (Fe/TNAs) to remove E. coli in a photoelectrochemical system. The Fe/TNAs was synthesized by the anodization method and followed by the square wave voltammetry electrochemical deposition (SWVE) method with ferric nitrate as the precursor. Fe/TNAs were characterized by SEM, XRD, XPS, and UV-vis DRS to investigate the surface properties and light absorption. As a result, the iron nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully deposited on the tubular structure of the TNAs, which showed the best light utilization. Moreover, the photoelectrochemical (PEC) properties of the Fe/TNAs were measured by current-light response and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The photocurrent of the Fe/TNAs-0.5 (3.5 mA/cm2) was higher than TNAs (2.0 mA/cm2) and electron lifetime of Fe/TNAs-0.5 (433.3 ms) were also longer than TNAs (290.3 ms). Compared to the photolytic (P), photocatalytic (PC), and electrochemical (EC) method, Fe/TNAs PEC showed the best removal efficiency for methyl orange degradation. Furthermore, the Fe/TNAs PEC system also performed better removal efficiency than that of photolysis method in E. coli degradation experiments.

Project description:Trace amounts of Co3O4 modified TiO2 nanorod arrays were successfully fabricated through the photochemical deposition method without adding any nocuous reagents. The Co3O4/TiO2 nanorod arrays fabricated in acid solution had the highest photo-electrochemical activity. We elaborated on the mechanism of Co3O4-TiO2 fabricated in different pH value solutions. The Co3O4-TiO2 had a more remarkable photo-electrochemical performance than the pure TiO2 nanorod arrays owing to the heterojunction between Co3O4 and TiO2. The degradation of methylene blue and hydroquinone was selected as the model reactions to evaluate the photo-electrochemical performance of Co3O4-TiO2 nanorod arrays. The Co3O4/TiO2 nanorod arrays had great potential in waste water treatment.

Project description:Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is a promising strategy to improve the efficiency of oxygen evolution reactions (OERs). However, the efficient adsorption of visible light as well as long-term stability of light-harvesting electrocatalysis is the crucial issue in PEC cells. Metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived bimetallic electrocatalysis with its superior performance has wide application prospects in OER and PEC applications. Herein, we have fabricated a nickel and iron bimetallic organic framework (FeNi-MOF) deposited on top of anodized TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNTA) for PEC and OER applications. The FeNi-MOF/TNTA was incorporated through the electrochemical deposition of Ni2+ and Fe3+ onto the surface of TNTA and then connected with organic ligands by the hydrothermal transformation. Therefore, FeNi-MOF/TNTA demonstrates abundant photoelectrocatalytic active sites that can enhance the photocurrent up to 1.91 mA/cm2 under 100 mW/cm2 and a negligible loss in activity after 180 min of photoreaction. The FeNi-MOF-doped photoanode shows predominant photoelectrochemical performance due to the boosted excellent light-harvesting ability, rapid photoresponse, and stimulated interfacial energy of charge separation under the UV-visible light irradiation conditions. The results of this study give deep insight into MOF-derived bimetallic nanomaterial synthesis for photoelectrochemical OER and provide guidance on future electrocatalysis design.
