An Improved Framework for Estimating Organic Carbon Content of Mangrove Soils Using loss-on-ignition and Coastal Environmental Setting.

ABSTRACT: The use of loss on ignition (LOI) measurements of soil organic matter (SOM) to estimate soil organic carbon (OC) content is a decades-old practice. While there are limitations and uncertainties to this approach, it continues to be necessary for many coastal wetlands researchers and conservation practitioners without access to an elemental analyzer. Multiple measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) standards recognize the need (and uncertainty) for using this method. However, no framework exists to explain the substantial differences among equations that relate SOM to OC; consequently, equation selection can be a haphazard process leading to widely divergent and inaccurate estimates. To address this lack of clarity, we used a dataset of 1,246 soil samples from 17 mangrove regions in North, Central, and South America, and calculated SOM to OC conversion equations for six unique types of coastal environmental setting. A framework is provided for understanding differences and selecting an equation based on a study region's SOM content and whether mineral sediments are primarily terrigenous or carbonate in origin. This approach identifies the positive dependence of conversion equation slopes on regional mean SOM content and indicates a distinction between carbonate settings with mean (± 1 S.E.) OC:SOM of 0.47 (0.002) and terrigenous settings with mean OC:SOM of 0.32 (0.018). This framework, focusing on unique coastal environmental settings, is a reminder of the global variability in mangrove soil OC content and encourages continued investigation of broadscale factors that contribute to soil formation and change in blue carbon settings.

Project description:Straw returning into the soil is a crucial method for boosting soil carbon levels. To research the influence of straw return practices on soil aggregates and organic matter content within the farmlands of the Northeast Black Soil Region, the objective was to clarify the varying impacts of these practices on soil carbon enhancement. In this study, 89 pertinent papers were acquired through a rigorous literature compilation. Meta-analysis and the linear regression method were employed to analyze the influence of field return methods, their duration on soil water-stable aggregates, and their organic matter content. Furthermore, the study delved into the trends in the variation of aggregates and organic matter in relation to mean annual temperature and precipitation. Our results showed that the straw-returning method has been discovered to predominantly bolster soil organic matter by altering the proportions of macro-aggregate content. Specifically, straw incorporation has led to a notable enhancement in the content of macro-aggregates (57.14%) and micro-aggregates (20.29%), in addition to augmenting the content of macro-, small, and micro-aggregate organic matter by 13.22%, 16.43%, and 15.08%, respectively. The most significant increase in large agglomerates was witnessed in straw return over a period of more than 5 years (115.17%), as well as shallow mixing return (87.32%). Meanwhile, the highest increase in the organic matter content of large agglomerates was recorded in straw return over 5 years (12.60%) and deep mixing return (8.72%). In the field validation experiment, a period of seven years of straw return significantly boosted the macro-aggregate content across various soil layers, ranging from 11.78% to 116.21%. Furthermore, among the various climatic factors, the primary determinants of disparities in study outcomes were the average annual temperature and average annual precipitation. Specifically, lower precipitation and higher temperatures were conducive to the enhancement of macro-aggregate formation and organic matter content.

Project description:Stable soil organic carbon (SOC) formation in coastal saline soils is important to improve arable land quality and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. However, how microbial life-history strategies and metabolic traits regulate SOC turnover in coastal saline soils remains unknown. Here, we investigated the effects of microbial life history strategy tradeoffs on microbial carbon use efficiency (CUE) and microbial-derived SOC formation using metagenomic sequencing technology in different salinity soils. The results showed that high-salinity is detrimental to microbial CUE and microbial-derived SOC formation. Moreover, the regulation of nutrients stoichiometry could not mitigate adverse effects of salt stress on microbial CUE, which indicated that microbial-derived SOC formation is independent of stoichiometry in high-salinity soil. Low-salinity soil is dominated by a high growth yield (Y) strategy, such as higher microbial biomass carbon and metabolic traits which are related to amino acid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, and cell processes. However, high-salinity soil is dominated by stress tolerance (S) (e.g., higher metabolic functions of homologous recombination, base excision repair, biofilm formation, extracellular polysaccharide biosynthesis, and osmolytes production) and resource acquisition (A) strategies (e.g., higher alkaline phosphatase activity, transporters, and flagellar assembly). These trade-offs of strategies implied that resource reallocation took place. The high-salinity soil microbes diverted investments away from growth yield to microbial survival and resource capture, thereby decreasing biomass turnover efficiency and impeding microbial-derived SOC formation. Moreover, altering the stoichiometry in low-salinity soil caused more investment in the A-strategy, such as the production of more β-glucosidase and β-N-acetyl-glucosaminidase, and increasing bacterial chemotaxis, which thereby reduced microbial-derived SOC formation. Our research reveals that shift the microbial community from S- and A- strategies to the Y-strategy is important to increase the microbial CUE, and thus enhance SOC turnover in coastal saline soils.
