Formation and Band Gap Tuning Mechanism of Multicolor Emissive Carbon Dots from m-Hydroxybenzaldehyde.

ABSTRACT: Reported in 2004, carbon dots (CDs) have been widely used in various fields due to their excellent optical properties. However, the mechanism of their fluorescence modulation is still a controversial issue, which also seriously affects the further development of carbon dots. In this paper, m-hydroxybenzaldehyde is used as a raw material to obtain multicolor luminescent CDs by pyrolysis under different reaction conditions, thereby revealing the forbidden band tuning and formation mechanism of CDs. Different acid-base conditions lead to different reaction paths of the precursors, forming molecular fluorophores with different conjugated structures, which aggregate to eventually form CDs and further enhance the photoluminescence of the system by inhibiting the movement of the fluorescent centers.

Preparation of Multicolor Photoluminescent Carbon Dots by Tuning Surface States.

Project description:The achievements of multicolor photoluminescent (PL)-emissive carbon dots (CDs), particularly red to near infrared (NIR), are critical for their applications in optoelectronic devices and bioimaging, but it still faces great challenges to date. In this study, PL emission red-shifts were observed when tartaric acid (TA) was added into m-phenylenediamine (mPD) or o-phenylenediamine (oPD) solutions as carbon sources to prepare CDs, i.e., from blue to green for mPD and from yellow-green to red for oPD. Morphology and structure analyses revealed that the increased surface oxidation and carboxylation were responsible for the red-shifts of emission, indicating that TA played a key role in tuning the surface state of CDs. These factors could be employed as effective strategies to adjust PL emissions of CDs. Consequently, multicolor PL CDs (i.e., blue-, green-, yellow-green- and red-emissive CDs) can be facilely prepared using mPD and oPD in the absence and presence of TA. Particularly, the obtained red-emissive CDs showed a high PL quantum yield up to 22.0% and an emission covering red to NIR regions, demonstrating great potentials in optoelectronic devices and bioimaging. Moreover, multicolor phosphors were further prepared by mixing corresponding CDs with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), among which the blue, green, and red ones could serve as three primary color phosphors for fabricating multicolor and white light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The white LED was measured to show a Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) 1931 chromaticity coordinate of (0.34, 0.32), a high color rendering index (CRI) of 89, and a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 5850 K, representing one of the best performances of white LEDs based on CDs.

Multicolor Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Quantum Dots for Environment-Dependent Emission Tuning.

Project description:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have potential applications in many fields such as light-emitting devices, photocatalysis, and bioimaging due to their unique photoluminescence (PL) properties and environmental benignness. Here, we report the synthesis of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (NCQDs) from citric acid and m-phenylenediamine using a one-pot hydrothermal approach. The environment-dependent emission changes of NCQDs were extensively investigated in various solvents, in the solid state, and in physically assembled PMMA-PnBA-PMMA copolymer gels in 2-ethyl-hexanol. NCQDs display bright emissions in various solvents as well as in the solid state. These NCQDs exhibit multicolor PL emission across the visible region upon changing the environment (solutions and polymer matrices). NCQDs also exhibit excitation-dependent PL and solvatochromism, which have not been frequently investigated in CQDs. Most CQDs are nonemissive in the aggregated or solid state due to the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect, limiting their solid-state applications. However, NCQDs synthesized here display a strong solid-state emission centered at 568 nm attributed to the presence of surface functional groups that restrict the π-π interaction between the NCQDs and assist in overcoming the ACQ effect in the solid state. NCQD-containing gels display significant fluorescence enhancement in comparison to the NCQDs in 2-ethyl hexanol, likely because of the interaction between the polar PMMA blocks and NCQDs. The application of NCQDs-Gel as a solid/gel state fluorescent display has been presented. This research facilitates the development of large-scale, low-cost multicolor phosphor for the fabrication of optoelectronic devices, sensing, and bioimaging applications.

Formation and fluorescent mechanism of red emissive carbon dots from o-phenylenediamine and catechol system.

Project description:Carbon dots (CDs) as the advancing fluorescent carbon nanomaterial have superior potential and prospective. However, the ambiguous photoluminescence (PL) mechanism and intricate structure-function relationship become the greatest hindrances in the development and applications of CDs. Herein, red emissive CDs were synthesized in high yield from o-phenylenediamine (oPD) and catechol (CAT). The PL mechanism of the CDs is considered as the molecular state fluorophores because 5,14-dihydroquinoxalino[2,3-b] phenazine (DHQP) is separated and exhibits the same PL properties and behavior as the CDs. These include the peak position and shape of the PL emission and PL excitation and the emission dependence on pH and solvent polarity. Both of them display close PL lifetime decays. Based on these, we deduce that DHQP is the fluorophore of the red emissive CDs and the PL mechanism of CDs is similar to DHQP. During the PL emission of CDs, the electron of the molecule state can transfer to CDs. The formation process of DHQP is further confirmed by the reaction intermediates (phthalazine, dimers) and oPD. These findings provide insights into the PL mechanism of this type of CDs and may guide the further development of tunable CDs for tailored properties.

Revealing the formation mechanism and band gap tuning of Sb<sub>2</sub>S<sub>3</sub> nanoparticles.

Project description:Sb2S3 is a promising nanomaterial for application in solar cells and in the fields of electronics and optoelectronics. Herein, Sb2S3 nanoparticles were prepared via the hot-injection approach. In contrast to earlier work, the reaction temperature was decreased to 150 °C so that the reaction was slowed down and could be stopped at defined reaction stages. Thereby, the formation mechanism of the nanomaterial and the associated kinetics could be revealed. Based on morphological and structural analyses, it is suggested that seed particles (type 0) formed immediately after injecting the antimony precursor into the sulfur precursor. These seeds fused to form amorphous nanoparticles (type I) that contained a lower percentage of sulfur than that corresponding to the expected stoichiometric ratio of Sb2S3. The reason for this possibly lies in the formation of an oxygen- or carbon-containing intermediate during the seeding process. Afterward, the type I nanoparticles aggregated into larger amorphous nanoparticles (type II) in a second hierarchical assembly process and formed superordinate structures (type III). This process was followed by the crystallization of these particles and a layer-like growth of the crystalline particles by an Ostwald ripening process at the expense of the amorphous particles. It was demonstrated that the kinetic control of the reaction allowed tuning of the optical band gap of the amorphous nanoparticles in the range of 2.2-2.0 eV. On the contrary, the optical band gap of the crystalline particles decreased to a value of 1.7 eV and remained constant when the reaction progressed. Based on the proposed formation mechanism, future syntheses for Sb2S3 particles can be developed, allowing tuning of the particle properties in a broad range. In this way, the selective use of this material in a wide range of applications will become possible.

Solvent mediated synthesis of multicolor narrow bandwidth emissive carbon quantum dots and their potential in white light emitting diodes.

Project description:The development of efficient and environmentally sustainable materials for white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) is of paramount importance in the field of lighting technology. In this study, we present a solvent-modulated synthesis approach for the fabrication of multicolor narrow-bandwidth emissive carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as a promising solution for constructing WLEDs. The synthesis method involves the controlled reaction of organic precursors in different solvent environments, leading to the formation of CQDs with distinct emission wavelengths with a relatively small full width at half maximum, ranging from 28 to 42 nm. Moreover, these synthesized multicolor CQDs demonstrate a remarkably high fluorescence quantum yield of up to 65%, indicating their potential for constructing efficient WLED when incorporated in polymer matrix and coated on the surface of blue light-emitting diode (LED).

A Facile Preparation of Multicolor Carbon Dots.

Project description:Carbon dots (CDs) have raised broad interest because of their great potential in the fluorescence related fields, such as photocatalysis and bioimaging. CDs exhibit different optical properties when dissolved in various solvents. However, the effects of solvents during the process of preparation on the fluorescence emission of CDs are still unclear. In this work, CDs were prepared by a simple one-pot solvothermal route. Typical critic acid and thiourea were used as precursors. Through changing the volume ratio of water to N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), we have obtained color tunable CDs, with the emission wavelength from 450 to 640 nm. TEM images, Raman and XPS spectra indicate that the particle size of CDs and the content of surface functional groups (C-N/C-S and C≡N bonds) increase with the increasing ratio of DMF to water, which results in the optimal emission wavelength red-shifted. The prepared multicolor CDs may have prospects in the lighting applications.

Hydrogen production by tuning the photonic band gap with the electronic band gap of TiO₂.

Project description:Tuning the photonic band gap (PBG) to the electronic band gap (EBG) of Au/TiO2 catalysts resulted in considerable enhancement of the photocatalytic water splitting to hydrogen under direct sunlight. Au/TiO2 (PBG-357 nm) photocatalyst exhibited superior photocatalytic performance under both UV and sunlight compared to the Au/TiO2 (PBG-585 nm) photocatalyst and both are higher than Au/TiO2 without the 3 dimensionally ordered macro-porous structure materials. The very high photocatalytic activity is attributed to suppression of a fraction of electron-hole recombination route due to the co-incidence of the PBG with the EBG of TiO2 These materials that maintain their activity with very small amount of sacrificial agents (down to 0.5 vol.% of ethanol) are poised to find direct applications because of their high activity, low cost of the process, simplicity and stability.

Distinctive optical transitions of tunable multicolor carbon dots.

Project description:Three types of carbon dots (CDs) are synthesized from isomers of phenylenediamine to develop multicolor nanomaterials with low toxicity, high stability, and high quantum yield. The distinctive electronic structures of CDs lead to the characteristic optical transitions, such as three colors of blue, green, and red, which are primarily attributed to the difference in configurations, despite the similar basic structures of conjugated systems. The excitation-independent emission and the single exponential decay of CDs indicate the single chromophore-like nature in each type of CD. In addition, the two-photon luminescence of CDs exhibits a comparable shape and time profile to the typical photoluminescence with high photostability. Although the surface-related defect states are observed by intragap excitation, the contribution of defect states is barely observed in the emission profile upon band gap excitation. Consequently, the controllability of optical transitions in CDs enhances the potential of tunable multicolor nanomaterials for various applications as alternatives to quantum dots containing toxic elements.

Facile band gap tuning in graphene-brucite heterojunctions.

Project description:The zero band gap of pure graphene is a well-known issue that limits some specific applications of graphene in opto- and microelectronics. This led to several research studies in the so-called van der Waals composites (known as heterostructures, or heterojunctions), where two monolayers of different materials are stacked and held together by dispersive interactions. In this paper, we introduced and considered a single layer of brucite Mg(OH)2, an overlooked 2D material that can be easily produced by exfoliation (like graphene from graphite), for the creation of the heterojunction. First principles simulations showed that brucite/graphene composites can modify the electronic properties (position of the Dirac cone with respect to the Fermi level and band gap) according to the crystallographic stacking and the presence of point defects. The present work represents then an important step forward in understanding and finding new ways to design two-dimensional materials with tailored electronic and physical properties.
