Reactions of nickel boranyl compounds with pnictogen-carbon triple bonds.

ABSTRACT: The catalytic conversion of unsaturated small molecules such as nitriles into reduced products is of interest for the production of fine chemicals. In this vein, metal-ligand cooperativity has been leveraged to promote such reactivity, often conferring stability to bound substrate - a balancing act that may offer activation at the cost of turnover efficiency. This report describes the reactivity of a [(diphosphine)Ni] compound with pnictogen carbon triple bonds (R-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]E; E = N, P), where the diphosphine contains two pendant borane groups. For E = N, cooperative nitrile coordination is observed to afford {Ni}₂ complexes displaying B-N interactions, whereas for E = P, B-P interactions are absent. This work additionally outlines a structure-activity relationship that uses nitrile dihydroboration as a model reaction to unveil the effect of SCS stabilization, employing [(diphosphine)Ni] where the diphosphine contains 0, 1, or 2 pendant Lewis acid groups.

Project description:Highly strained cage hydrocarbons have long stood as fundamental molecules to explore the limits of chemical stability and reactivity, probe physical properties, and more recently as bioactive molecules and in materials discovery. Interestingly, the nitrogenous congeners have attracted much less attention. Previously absent from the literature, azahomocubanes, offer an opportunity to investigate the effects of a nitrogen atom when incorporated into a highly constrained polycyclic environment. Herein disclosed is the synthesis of 1-azahomocubane, accompanied by comprehensive structural characterization, physical property analysis and chemical reactivity. These data support the conclusion that nitrogen is remarkably well tolerated in a highly strained environment. 1-Azahomocubane has been prepared 56 years after the parent hydrocarbon. Introduction of a nitrogen atom into this constrained polycyclic environment resulted in minimal changes to the framework geometry, with s-character of the nitrogen lone pair increasing due to strain.

Project description:The title compound, C(13)H(10)N(4)O(2)S, was prepared through a cyclization reaction of 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione and thio-urea. The dihedral angle between the pyridine rings is 8.22 (2)°. In the crystal, mol-ecules are connected by N-H⋯O, O-H⋯N, N-H⋯S and O-H⋯S hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional network.

Project description:A catalytic asymmetric α-C(sp3)–H functionalization of alkyl silanes with benzosultams was realized by merging photoredox and chiral Lewis acid catalysis. The key to success was the choice of photocatalyst with an appropriate redox potential and non-nucleophilic solvent, providing a novel entry to chiral organosilanes containing two adjacent tri- and tetra-substituted stereocenters with high to efficient diastereo- and enantioselectivity (up to 99% ee, 94 : 6 dr) under mild reaction conditions. Based on the control experiment and spectral analysis, an initial single electron transfer reduction of a benzosultam-triggered simultaneous or stepwise electron transfer/proton transfer process was proposed to rationalize the favored C(sp3)–H functionalization rather than desilylation. A visible-light-induced chemo-, diastereo- and enantioselective α-C(sp3)–H functionalization of alkyl silanes with benzosultams was realized under a bimetallic synergetic catalysis.

Project description:Electron injection is demonstrated to trigger electrocatalytic chain reactions capable of releasing a solvent molecule and forming a redox active guest molecule. One-electron reduction of a hydroxy anthrone derivative (AQH–CH2CN) results in the formation of an anthraquinone radical anion (AQ˙−) and acetonitrile (CH3CN). The resulting fragment of AQ˙− exhibits high stability under mild reducing conditions, and it has enough reducing power to reduce the reactant of AQH–CH2CN. Hence, subsequent electron transfer from AQ˙− to AQH–CH2CN yields the secondary AQ˙− and CH3CN, while the initial AQ˙− is subsequently oxidized to AQ. Overall, the reactants of AQH–CH2CN are completely converted into AQ and CH3CN in sustainable electrocatalytic chain reactions. These electrocatalytic chain reactions are mild and sustainable, successfully achieving catalytic electron-triggered charge-transfer (CT) complex formation. Reactant AQH–CH2CN is non-planar, making it unsuitable for CT interaction with an electron donor host compound (UHAnt2) bearing parallel anthracene tweezers. However, conversion of AQH–CH2CN to planar electron acceptor AQ by the electrocatalytic chain reactions turns on CT interaction, generating a host CT complex with UHAnt2 (AQ ⊂ UHAnt2). Therefore, sustainable electrocatalytic chain reactions can control CT interactions using only a catalytic amount of electrons, ultimately affording a one-electron switch associated with catalytic electron-triggered turn-on molecular recognition. The reactants of AQH–CH2CN are converted into AQ and CH3CN in sustainable electrocatalytic chain reactions, successfully achieving catalytic electron-triggered charge-transfer (CT) complex formation.

Project description:This study reports the stabilizing effect of an intramolecularly coordinated thioether function in propene complexes of the general formula [{η5:κS-C5H4(CH2)2SR}M(CO)2(η2-C2H3Me)][BF4] (M = Mo, W; R = Et, Ph). They are formed by protonation of allyl analogues [{η5-C5H4(CH2)2SR}M(CO)2(η3-C3H5)] by tetrafluoroboric acid in non-coordinating solvents. In contrast to analogues with unsubstituted Cp ligands, these propene complexes are isolable in a pure form and characterized by NMR spectroscopy. The molybdenum compounds are stable at low temperature and the propene ligand can easily be exchanged by thioethers or acetonitrile. Several representatives of the reaction products were characterized by X-ray structure analysis. The stabilization effect in tungsten complexes [{η5:κS-C5H4(CH2)2SR}W(CO)2(η2-C2H3Me)][BF4] (R = Et, Ph) was unusually high. The compounds are long-term stable at room temperature and do not undergo ligand exchange reactions even with strong chelators such as 1,10-phenanthroline. The molecular structure of the tungsten propene complex was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis on a single crystal. The stabilizing effect of an intramolecularly coordinated thioether function in propene complexes of molybdenum and tungsten is reported.

Project description:Organic single-component ferroelectrics, as an important class of metal-free ferroelectrics, are highly desirable because of their easy processing, mechanical flexibility, and biocompatibility. However, although nearly 50 years have passed since the discovery of photochromism in azobenzene-doped cholesteric liquid crystals, ferroelectricity has never been found in azobenzene-based crystals. Here, we use an amino group to substitute a fluorine atom of 2,2′,4,4′,6,6′-hexafluoroazobenzene, which successfully introduces ferroelectricity into 2-amino-2′,4,4′,6,6′-pentafluoroazobenzene (APFA). APFA shows an extremely high Curie temperature (Tc) of 443 K, which is outstanding among single-component ferroelectrics. It also exhibits an indirect optical band gap of 2.27 eV as well as photoisomerization behavior between the trans-form and the cis-form triggered by pedal motion. To our knowledge, APFA is the first azobenzene-based ferroelectric crystal. This work opens an avenue to design excellent single-component ferroelectrics and will inspire the exploration of azobenzene-based ferroelectrics for promising applications in biofriendly ferroelectric devices. The first azobenzene-based organic single-component ferroelectric 2-amino-2′,4,4′,6,6′-pentafluoroazobenzene was designed, which shows an exceptionally high Curie temperature (Tc) of 443 K.
