What is this summary about?

This is a summary of a research survey called ACTION Teens. In our survey, 12,987 people from 10 countries answered questions about obesity. They were: 5275 teenagers with obesity, 5389 caregivers of teenagers with obesity, and 2323 doctors who provide medical care for teenagers with obesity.

What were the main results of the survey?

Most teenagers with obesity were worried about their weight and thought that losing weight was their responsibility. Many teenagers had already tried to lose weight. For teenagers, wanting to be more fit or in better shape was the top reason for wanting to lose weight. Some caregivers did not realize how worried their teenager was about their own weight. There were also some caregivers who were not aware of their teenager's recent attempts to lose weight. As a group, the doctors did not know the main reasons why teenagers want to lose weight. They also did not know the main reasons preventing teenagers from losing weight.

What do the results of the survey mean?

Teenagers with obesity will be better supported and understood if there is better communication between teenagers, caregivers, and doctors. Clinical Trial Registration: NCT05013359 (ClinicalTrials.gov).

Project description:ObjectivesThe Awareness, Care and Treatment In Obesity maNagement (ACTION) Teens study explored attitudes, behaviours, perceptions and barriers regarding effective obesity care among adolescents living with obesity (ALwO), caregivers and healthcare professionals (HCPs).DesignCross-sectional online survey study.SettingStudy across 10 countries; here, we report data from UK respondents.ParticipantsOverall, 416 ALwO (aged 12 to <18 years; body mass index ≥95th percentile for age and sex (WHO charts)), 498 caregivers and 250 HCPs in the UK completed the survey (August-December 2021).Primary and secondary outcome measuresSurvey questions addressed key aspects of obesity management for ALwO.ResultsOverall, 46% of ALwO perceived their weight as normal or below normal and 86% believed their health was at least good; 56% and 93% of caregivers responded similarly for their ALwO. Despite this, most ALwO (57%) had attempted to lose weight in the past year and 34% felt highly motivated to lose weight. YouTube and social media were most often used by ALwO for information about weight management (41% and 39%); few ALwO and caregivers sought information from a doctor (13% and 22%). Among ALwO who had discussed weight with an HCP (n=122), 49% trusted their weight-management advice. Only 10% of ALwO and 8% of caregivers were told by a doctor that they/their child had obesity. For HCPs, obesity-related comorbidities were the most common reason for initiating weight conversations with ALwO (73%), while short appointment times were the most common barrier (46%). Overall, 30% of ALwO and 11% of caregivers did not feel comfortable bringing up weight with an HCP.ConclusionsImproved education and communication are needed among ALwO, caregivers and HCPs in the UK to help improve awareness of obesity, its aetiology and its impact on health, and to support HCPs to proactively initiate weight-related conversations and build trust with ALwO and caregivers.Trial registration numberNCT05013359.

Project description:What is this summary about? This is a summary of a research study (known as a clinical trial) called the LIBERTY extension study. The LIBERTY extension study is a long-term study looking at how well a medicine called relugolix combination therapy worked in reducing blood loss during menstrual periods in women with uterine fibroids with heavy menstrual periods. Women were included in the extension study if they finished the 24-week LIBERTY 1 or LIBERTY 2 studies. Heavy menstrual periods were considered to be menstrual blood loss of about one-third of a cup of blood (80 ml) per cycle for two cycles or about two-thirds of a cup of blood (160 ml) during one cycle. The LIBERTY extension study also looked at whether relugolix combination therapy was safe to take for up to 1 year. What were the results? Out of 770 total women with uterine fibroids with heavy menstrual bleeding who took part in the LIBERTY 1 and LIBERTY 2 studies, 476 took part in the LIBERTY extension study. From the start of the LIBERTY 1 and LIBERTY 2 studies through the end of the LIBERTY extension: 163 women took relugolix combination therapy for 52 weeks 149 women took relugolix alone for 12 weeks followed by relugolix combination therapy for 40 weeks 164 women took placebo for 24 weeks followed by relugolix combination therapy for 28 weeks The LIBERTY extension study showed that most women in all three treatment groups responded to relugolix combination therapy by having less bleeding during their menstrual periods, having improved anemia symptoms, and having stable bone mineral loss. Side effects were similar across treatment groups, and the most common side effects were headaches and hot flushes. What do the results mean? Women with uterine fibroids with heavy menstrual bleeding taking relugolix combination therapy may have fewer uterine fibroid bleeding symptoms for up to 1 year of treatment. Project description:What is this summary about? This is a plain language summary of an article published in the journal Advances in Therapy. In 2020, the US Food and Drug Administration (also called the FDA) approved a medicine called vibegron to treat overactive bladder, also called OAB. The key results used to approve vibegron were from the EMPOWUR study. In the EMPOWUR study, participants who took vibegron had fewer urination episodes, urgency episodes, and bladder leaks each day than those who took a pill containing no medicine, called a placebo. At the end of the study, participants also rated how much their overactive bladder symptoms changed overall during EMPOWUR by responding to a survey. Many participants rated their overactive bladder symptoms as improved overall. This study asked if improvements in the number of urination episodes, urgency episodes, and bladder leaks caused by urgency were associated with feeling better overall. This study also looked at how many participants in the EMPOWUR study had improvements in the number of urination episodes, urgency episodes, and bladder leaks that were big enough to matter. A separate group of people with overactive bladder were asked about the magnitude of improvements that would be important to them. This group had not participated in the EMPOWUR study. What were the results? EMPOWUR participants who reported that taking medicine resulted in their overactive bladder symptoms getting better overall also generally reported fewer daily urinations, urgency episodes, and bladder leaks after treatment. Many had changes in their symptoms that were meaningful. Meaningful was defined for each symptom as: at least 15% fewer urinations, 50% fewer urgency episodes, and 75% fewer bladder leaks. Participants who received vibegron had meaningful reductions in the daily number of episodes of urination, urgency, and bladder leaks more often than those who received the placebo (pill with no active medicine). People with overactive bladder who did not participate in the study were interviewed and said that improvements to those symptoms, similar to those seen in the EMPOWUR study, would be important to them. What do the results mean? This study suggests that the results we measured in the EMPOWUR study may also reflect changes in overactive bladder symptoms that are big enough to be important to people with overactive bladder. Many participants who took vibegron in the EMPOWUR study felt that it helped to improve their individual overactive bladder symptoms. This may also help improve quality of life of participants. Project description:BackgroundUnderstanding the perceived importance of Patient-Centered Care (PCC) among Palestinian doctors and how the provider and other clinical characteristics may impact their views on PCC is essential to determine the extent to which PCC can be implemented. This study investigates the provision of PCC among hospital doctors in a developing and unstable country, namely, Palestine.MethodsThis descriptive, cross-sectional research employed self-report survey among 369 Palestinian doctors working in hospitals in 2016. Respondents completed the Provider-Patient Relationship Questionnaire (PPRQ) and were asked to rate the importance of 16 PCC subjects in a context-free manner. Then they scored the existence of eight contextual attributes in their workplace.ResultsAlthough 71.4% of the participants got training in communication, only 45% of the participants knew about PCC. 48.8% of doctors considered the "exchange of information" with patients most important PCC component. Clustering identified three groups of doctors: 32.4% of doctors reported good perceptions of PCC, 47.5% moderate; and 20.1% poor. Older, married, and specialist doctors and those familiar with PCC are more likely classified in the "good" cluster. Results revealed a significant difference between doctors' views based on their gender, experience, marital status, previous knowledge about PCC, and type of hospital in favor of males, experienced, married, familiar with PCC, and doctors in private hospital respectively. The level of job interest, nurses' cooperation, the tendency of patients to hide information, and doctor's friendly style were positively related with more perceived importance of PCC.ConclusionWe identified benchmark doctors who perceive the high relative importance of PCC. Our results highlighted knowledge gaps and training weaknesses among doctors in public and private hospitals in respect to their views on PCC. Decision makers may invest in the determined contextual predictors to enhance attitudes towards PCC. This work doesn't address patients' views on PCC.

Project description:What is this summary about?Researchers wanted to study whether the research drug zanidatamab could help people with a type of cancer called biliary tract cancer. In some people, biliary tract cancer cells make extra copies of a gene called HER2 (also called ERBB2). This is known as being HER2-amplified. Zanidatamab is an antibody designed to destroy cancer cells that have higher-than-normal HER2 protein or gene levels. Zanidatamab is currently under research and is not yet approved for any diseases. Participants in this phase 2b clinical study had tumors that were HER2-amplified and at the advanced or metastatic stage. Participants also had cancer which had become worse after previous chemotherapy or had side effects that were too bad to continue chemotherapy. They also had to meet other requirements to be enrolled. Researchers measured the amount of HER2 protein in the tumor samples of the participants who were enrolled. There were 80 participants with tumors that were both HER2 amplified and had higher-than-normal HER2 protein amounts (considered to be 'HER2-positive'). There were 7 participants with tumors that were HER2-amplified, but had little-to-no levels of the HER2 protein (considered to be 'HER2-low'). All participants in the study were treated with zanidatamab and no other cancer treatments once every 2 weeks.What are the key takeaways?In the HER2-positive group, 33 of 80 (41%) participants had their tumors shrink by 30% or more of their original size. In half of these participants, their tumors did not grow for 13 months or longer. No participant in the HER2-low group had their tumors shrink by 30% or more. In total, 63 of 87 participants (72%) had at least one side effect believed to be related to zanidatamab treatment. Most side effects were mild or moderate in severity. No participant died from complications related to zanidatamab. Diarrhea was one of the more common side effects and was experienced by 32 of 87 participants (37%). Side effects related to receiving zanidatamab through the vein, such as chills, fever, or high blood pressure, were experienced by 29 of 87 participants (33%).What are the conclusions reported by the researchers?The results of this study support the potential for zanidatamab as a new therapy for people with HER2-positive biliary tract cancer after they had already received chemotherapy.
