Transposable elements (TE) are mobile DNA sequences whose excessive proliferation endangers the host. Although animals have evolved robust TE-targeting defenses, including Piwi-interacting (pi)RNAs, retrotransposon LINE-1 (L1) still thrives in humans and mice.
