Project description:Perceived risks and safety concerns are strong predictors of travel intentions. This research examines the effectiveness of the COVID-19 infection rate presentation format in changing respondents' risk perceptions and travel intentions to a COVID-19-affected destination. In two experimental studies conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, participants (N = 1219) received information on infection rates in one of four mathematically equivalent formats: raw numbers, percentages, N-in-NX ratio, and 1-in-X ratio. Three distinct components of risk perception were measured: affective, analytical, and experiential. Results show that the infection rate presented using percentages increased the intention to travel compared to that presented using an N-in-NX ratio and raw numbers. Moreover, the infection rate presented using a 1-in-X ratio decreased the intention to travel compared to that presented using an N-in-NX ratio and percentages. These findings are in line with two apparently inconsistent phenomena: the ratio bias, according to which ratios with larger numerators induce a higher perceived infection risk than ratios with smaller ones, and the 1-in-X effect, according to which ratios with “1” at the numerator induce a higher perceived infection risk than ratios with other numbers at the numerator. Additionally, the effect of numerical formats on travel intentions was fully mediated by affective and analytical risk perceptions but only partially by experiential risk perceptions. Overall, the findings show the importance of the format used to present infection rates on changing individuals' travel intentions.

Project description:This study aims to explore the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on tourists' travel risk and management perceptions. Driven on the effect of the pandemic, we investigate tourists' travel risk and management perceptions and its effect on society using a sample of 716 respondents. The data was collected through social media platforms using a representative sampling method and analyzed applying the PLS-SEM tool. The findings reveal that Covid-19 pandemic has greatly affected travel risk and management perceptions. Travel risk and management perception had a significant association with risk management, service delivery, transportation patterns, distribution channels, avoidance of overpopulated destinations, and hygiene and safety. The results also identified the mediating effect of travel risk and management perceptions. The finding of this study contributes to tourism crises and provides future research insights in the travel and tourism sector and response to change tourists' travel risk and management perceptions in the post-covid recovery period.

Project description:Concerted, timely action for mitigating climate change is of uttermost importance to keep global warming as close to 1.5°C as possible. Air traffic already plays a strong role in driving climate change and is projected to grow-with only limited technical potential for decarbonizing this means of transport. Therefore, it is desirable to minimize the expansion of air traffic or even facilitate a reduction in affluent countries. Effective policies and behavioral change, especially among frequent flyers, can help to lower greenhouse gas emissions. For both, a positive evaluation and public support is indispensable. This study contributes to understanding air travel behavior and the perception of regulative policies. We examined the role of attitudes, perceived behavioral control, efficacy, global identity, and justice concerns for intentions to avoid flights and aviation-related environmental policy support. We conducted an online survey study with a quota sample of N = 2,530 participants in Germany. The strongest positive predictors of intentions to refrain from flying and policy support were perceived behavioral control to travel without flying, efficacy beliefs that avoiding air travel contributes to climate change mitigation, and intergenerational justice concerns; pro-travel attitude was a negative predictor. Moreover, we tested whether the provision of additional information on climate impact, global and intranational inequalities as well as subsidies (implying intranational inequality) affected the intention to avoid air travel and policy support. We found no effects of the different types of information. Nor did we find an interaction between the type of information provided and global or national identity. Our results highlight the need for a shift within the mobility sector that facilitates attractive and accessible transport alternatives in order to strengthen people's behavioral control to choose other means than planes and their efficacy perceptions. Moreover, raising awareness of the impacts of climate change on future generations and developing strategies to promote people's concern for intergenerational justice might motivate people to reduce air travel and thereby contribute to a livable future for new generations.

Project description:The growth of the air transport industry has been accompanied by various crises including aircraft incidents and accidents, terrorist attacks, and pandemics such as COVID-19. These crises to a great extent affect air travelers' motivation, which in turn affects the air travel demand that justifies airlines' legitimate existence and sustainability. However, there has been relatively little research into understanding air travelers' motivation during and after such crises, despite some studies having been conducted in the tourism domain to understand the motivation of tourists to travel to specific destinations. An enhanced knowledge in this field is important and would benefit the airline industry, which is facing increasing competition from other transportation modes as well online conferencing technologies. By applying the Push and Pull Factor model, this study has sought to identify the travel motivation and further determine whether Push factors have any positive influence on Pull factors. To this end, 760 questionnaires were collected from Taiwan. Both descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were conducted to test the hypotheses. Our findings reveal that the Destination image remains the most influential Pull factor, while Aviation-specific products and services is the least attractive Pull factor. Self-realization/achievement topped the rankings for the Push factors, while Flying experience was a selling point in its own right among the Push factors, although it was not as appealing as anticipated. The millennium generation, fewer frequent flyers and low-income consumers are more likely to take advantage of flying deals. This paper suggests that a more collaborative approach between airlines, airports and destination organizations could be adopted to design and promote tailor-made aviation and travel products to stimulate segmented consumers' demand for air travel during crises. Effective marketing strategies need to be in place to promote the specially-designed travel products.

Project description:The current study provides data about the immediate risk perceptions and psychological effects of the COVID-19 pandemic among Italian participants. A sample of 980 volunteers answered a web-based survey which aimed to investigate the many facets of risk perceptions connected to COVID-19 (health, work, institutional-economy, interpersonal and psychological), and risk-related variables such as perceived knowledge, news seeking, perceived control, perceived efficacy of containment measures, and affective states. Socio-demographic characteristics were also collected. Results showed that although levels of general concern are relatively high among Italians, risk perceptions are highest with regards to the institutional-economy and work, and lowest concerning health. COVID-19 has been also estimated to be the least likely cause of death. Cognitive and affective risk-related variables contributed to explain the several risk perception domains differently. COVID-19 perceived knowledge did not affect any risk perception while the perceived control decreased health risk likelihood. The other risk-related variables amplified risk perceptions: News seeking increased work and institutional-economy risk; perceived efficacy of containment measures increased almost all perceived risks; negative affective states of fear, anger and sadness increased health risk; anxiety increased health, interpersonal and psychological risks, and uncertainty increased work, institutional-economy, interpersonal and psychological risk perceptions. Finally, positive affective states increased health risk perception. Socio-psychological implications are discussed.

Project description:The dataset provides comprehensive cross-cultural data on individuals' value priorities, risk perceptions, attitudes, and behavioral intentions to spend on experiences in the post-Corona crisis. The questionnaire was designed to incorporate several theoretical concepts around cultural psychology, tourism, and public health as well as specific questions about tourists' behavioral intentions suggested by practitioners from the experience economy sector. The survey sample was collected based on quota sampling representative in terms of age, gender, and geography (gross sample) in the respective countries: China, Denmark, Italy, and Japan. The target sample was set as males and females the age of 18 years old or above in each country who have traveled abroad (either leisure or business) at least once within the past three years. The survey was conducted for the period between the 10th and 24th of July 2020 and collected a total of 4172 respondents divided into the four nationalities: Chinese (n = 1019), Danish (n = 1,028), Italian (n = 1014), and Japanese (n = 1111). Analyzed data are presented with mean, standard deviation, the minimum and maximum range of responses for the scale-based questions, and frequencies and proportions for the categorical questions. Raw data are accessible in 'sav' and 'csv' formats.

Project description:BackgroundStudent travellers are recognised as a group at high risk of travel-related morbidity, but few previous studies have evaluated students' perceptions of or willingness to take risks during travel. Individual risk propensities may influence travellers' engagement in pre-travel healthcare and can therefore inform strategies in pre-travel risk communication. This study aimed to describe the factors influencing risk-taking willingness, risk perceptions and future health-seeking intention among student travellers.MethodWe conducted a cross-sectional online survey (June-August 2021) among students enrolled at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. Primary outcomes were travel-related risk-taking willingness and risk perceptions, measured using the health/safety items of the validated Domain-Specific Risk-Taking (DOSPERT) scale.ResultsFour hundred and eighteen students completed the survey. The mean age of respondents was 25.61 years, 78% were female and 46% were born outside Australia. Greater willingness to take risks was predicted by younger age (<25 years), being Australian-born, greater travel experience (3+ trips), having previously sought PTA, and perceiving oneself at low risk of severe COVID-19. We found no significant predictors of risk perception. Increased intention to seek pre-travel advice in the future was associated with greater risk perception, younger age, and perceiving oneself at high risk of severe COVID-19.ConclusionThese findings support the rationale for a greater role of risk communication in travel medicine promotion strategies. We recommend that this could be achieved through 1) increasing risk perception by emphasising potential travel-associated risks, 2) personalising information about travel risks, 3) addressing perceived benefits of engaging in risky behaviours, and 4) reinforcing self-efficacy.

Project description:This study analyses how Covid-19 shapes individuals' international tourism intentions in context of bounded rationality. It provides a novel analysis of risk which is disaggregated into tolerance/aversion of and competence to manage risks across three different aspects: general, domain (tourism) and situational (Covid-19). The impacts of risk are also differentiated from uncertainty and ambiguity. The empirical study is based on large samples (total = 8962) collected from the world's top five tourism source markets: China, USA, Germany, UK and France. Various risk factors show significant predictive powers of individual's intentions to defer international tourism plans amid Covid-19. Uncertainty and ambiguity intolerance is shown to lead to intentions to take holidays relatively sooner rather than delaying the holiday plans.

Project description:BackgroundLittle research addresses how medical students develop their choice of specialty training in crisis and resource-poor settings. The newly graduated medical students determine the future of the healthcare system. This study aims to elucidate the factors influencing Syrian medical students' specialty selection and students' intentions to study abroad.MethodsA cross-sectional study carried out at the universities of Damascus, Al-Kalamoon and the Syrian Private University in Syria using self-administered questionnaire to investigate medical students' specialty preferences and plans for career future. The questionnaire included questions about students' demographic and educational characteristics, intention to train abroad, the chosen country for training.ResultsRandomly selected 450 students completed the questionnaire. The two most common specialties selected were general surgery (27.6%) and internal medicine (23.5%). The most influencing factors on their decision were 'flexibility of specialty' (74.8%) and 'Better work opportunities after specializing' (69.1%). Most participants stated that they are interested in specializing abroad outside Syria (78.7%). The two most common countries of choice were Germany (35.5%) and the United States of America (24.6%). Acquiring a visa to the foreign country was the most common obstacle of specializing abroad (n = 186, 53.6%). Male gender, having a previous clinical training abroad, and having friends or relatives living abroad were significant factors in predicting students' interest in specializing abroad.ConclusionInternal medicine and surgery are the most reported specialties of choice in this study and most of the participants reported intentions to study abroad. Their specialty preferences are influenced by both familiar epidemiological and war-driven factors. These data can be useful to design further cohort study to understand the war-related affecting factors on students' plans for their career in the effort of improving the balance of healthcare system in Syria.

Project description:PurposeDespite lack of survival benefit, demand for contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) to treat unilateral breast cancer remains high. High uptake of CPM has been demonstrated in Midwestern rural women. Greater travel distance for surgical treatment is associated with CPM. Our objective was to examine the relationship between rurality and travel distance to surgery with CPM.MethodsWomen diagnosed with stages I-III unilateral breast cancer between 2007 and 2017 were identified using the National Cancer Database. Logistic regression was used to model likelihood of CPM based on rurality, proximity to metropolitan centers, and travel distance. A multinomial logistic regression model compared factors associated with CPM with reconstruction versus other surgical options.ResultsBoth rurality (OR 1.10, 95% CI 1.06-1.15 for non-metro/rural vs. metro) and travel distance (OR 1.37, 95% CI 1.33-1.41 for those who traveled 50 + miles vs. < 30 miles) were independently associated with CPM. For women who traveled 30 + miles, odds of receiving CPM were highest for non-metro/rural women (OR 1.33 for 30-49 miles, OR 1.57 for 50 + miles; reference: metro women traveling < 30 miles). Non-metro/rural women who received reconstruction were more likely to undergo CPM regardless of travel distance (ORs 1.11-1.21). Both metro and metro-adjacent women who received reconstruction were more likely to undergo CPM only if they traveled 30 + miles (ORs 1.24-1.30).ConclusionThe impact of travel distance on likelihood of CPM varies by patient rurality and receipt of reconstruction. Further research is needed to understand how patient residence, travel burden, and geographic access to comprehensive cancer care services, including reconstruction, influence patient decisions regarding surgery.
