Project description:Supramolecular polymers offer tremendous potential to produce new "smart" materials, however, there remains a need to develop systems that are responsive to external stimuli. In this work, visible-light responsive hydrogen-bonded supramolecular polymers comprising photoresponsive supramolecular synthons (I-III) consisting of two hydrogen bonding motifs (HBMs) connected by a central ortho-tetrafluorinated azobenzene have been characterized by DOSY NMR and viscometry. Comparison of different hydrogen-bonding motifs reveals that assembly in the low and high concentration regimes is strongly influenced by the strength of association between the HBMs. I, Incorporating a triply hydrogen-bonded heterodimer, was found to exhibit concentration dependent switching between a monomeric pseudo-cycle and supramolecular oligomer through intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between the HBMs. II, Based on the same photoresponsive scaffold, and incorporating a quadruply hydrogen-bonded homodimer was found to form a supramolecular polymer which was dependent upon the ring-chain equilibrium and thus dependent upon both concentration and photochemical stimulus. Finally, III, incorporating a quadruply hydrogen-bonded heterodimer represents the first photoswitchable AB type hydrogen-bonded supramolecular polymer. Depending on the concentration and photostationary state, four different assemblies dominate for both monomers II and III, demonstrating the ability to control supramolecular assembly and physical properties triggered by light.

Project description:This article reports H-bonding driven supramolecular polymerization of naphthalimide (A)-thiophene (D)-naphthalimide (A) (AD n A, n = 1-4) conjugated ambipolar π-systems and its remarkable impact on room temperature ferroelectricity. Electrochemical studies confirm the ambipolar nature of these AD n A molecules with the HOMO-LUMO gap varying between 2.05 and 2.29 eV. Electron density mapping from ESP calculations reveals intra-molecular charge separation as typically observed in ambipolar systems. In the aggregated state, AD1A and AD2A exhibit bathochromically shifted absorption bands while AD3A and AD4A show typical H-aggregation with a hypsochromic shift. Polarization vs. electric field (P-E) measurements reveal stable room temperature ferroelectricity for these supramolecular assemblies, most prominent for the AD2A system, with a Curie temperature (T c) ≈ 361 K and saturation polarization (P s) of ∼2 μC cm-2 at a rather low coercive field of ∼2 kV cm-1. Control molecules, lacking either the ambipolar chromophore or the amide functionality, do not show any ferroelectricity, vindicating the present molecular and supramolecular design. Computational studies enable structural optimization of the stacked oligomer(s) of AD2A molecules and reveal a significant increase in the macro-dipole moment (in the range of 10-12 Debye) going from the monomer to the oligomer(s), which provides the rationale for the origin of ferroelectricity in these supramolecular polymers.

Project description:The interaction of tetratopic amidinium-containing receptors with terephthalate anions leads to porous framework materials assembled through charge-assisted hydrogen bonds. The frameworks form in good yield within minutes in water at room temperature, but no framework material is obtained if other anions (Cl-, Br-, NO3-, SO42- or isophthalate2-) are used in place of terephthalate. Two forms of the framework can be prepared: one with a connected pore network, and a more dense phase with discrete voids. We demonstrate that these are the kinetic and thermodynamic products, respectively. Either framework can be prepared independently and can be converted to the other form in response to stimuli. Furthermore, the frameworks can be controllably disassembled and reassembled in response to acid/base triggers suggesting that this new class of materials may have applications in the selective encapsulation and release of guests.

Project description:Orthogonal self-assembly represents a useful methodology to construct supramolecular polymers with AA- and AB-type monomers, as commonly used for covalently linked polymers. So far, the design of such monomers has relied heavily on three-dimensional macrocycles, and the use of two-dimensional shape-persistent macrocycles for this purpose remains rather rare. Here, we demonstrate a dimerization motif based on a hydrogen-bonded macrocycle that can be effectively applied to form orthogonal supramolecular polymers. The macrocycle-mediated connectivity was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which revealed a unique 2:2 binding motif between host and guest, bridged by two cationic pyridinium end groups through π-stacking interactions and other cooperative intermolecular forces. Zinc ion-induced coordination with the macrocycle and a terpyridinium derivative enabled orthogonal polymerization, as revealed by 1H NMR, DLS, and TEM techniques. In addition, viscosity measurements showed a transition from oligomers to polymers at the critical polymerization concentration of 17 μM. These polymers were highly concentration-dependent. Establishing this new dimerization motif with shape-persistent H-bonded macrocycles widens the scope of noncovalent building blocks for supramolecular polymers and augurs well for the future development of functional materials.

Project description:Hydrogen-bonded squaramide (SQ) supramolecular polymers exhibit uncommon thermoreversible polymorph transitions between particle- and fiber-like nanostructures. SQs 1-3, with different steric bulk, self-assemble in solution into particles (AggI) upon cooling to 298 K, and SQs 1 and 2, with only one dendronic group, show a reversible transformation into fibers (AggII) by further decreasing the temperature to 288 K. Nano-DSC and UV/Vis studies on SQ 1 reveal a concentration-dependent transition temperature and ΔH for the AggI-to-AggII conversion, while the kinetic studies on SQ 2 indicate the on-pathway nature of the polymorph transition. Spectroscopic and theoretical studies reveal that these transitions are triggered by the molecular reorganization of the SQ units changing from slipped to head-to-tail hydrogen bonding patterns. This work unveils the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of reversible polymorph transitions that are of interest to develop stimuli-responsive systems.

Project description:In this work we describe the solvent free synthesis of supramolecular polyurethanes held together by heterocomplementary triple hydrogen bonding. We perform a systematic evaluation on the base catalyzed synthesis of small molecule ureas and carbamates from a range of isocyanates, amines and alcohols in solution and in the solid state using ball milling. These optimized procedures are then shown to be applicable to the synthesis of supramolecular polyurethanes using solvent-free methods.

Project description:Bio-inspired self-assembly is invaluable to create well-defined giant structures from small molecular units. Owing to a large entropy loss in the self-assembly process, highly symmetric structures are typically obtained as thermodynamic products while formation of low symmetric assemblies is still challenging. In this study, we report the symmetry-breaking self-assembly of a defined C1-symmetric supramolecular structure from an Oh-symmetric hydrogen-bonded resorcin[4]arene capsule and C2-symmetric cationic bis-cyclometalated Ir complexes, carrying sterically demanding tertiary butyl (tBu) groups, on the basis of synergistic effects of weak binding forces. The flexible capsule framework shows a large structural change upon guest binding to form a distorted resorcin[4]arene hexameric capsule, providing an asymmetric cavity. Location of the chiral guest inside the anisotropic environment leads to modulation of its Electric Dipole (ED) and Magnetic Dipole (MD) transition moments in the excited state, causing an increased emission quantum yield, longer emission lifetime, and enhancement of the dissymmetry factor (glum) in the circularly polarized luminescence.

Project description:Molecular recognition to preorganize noncovalently polymerizable supramolecular complexes is a characteristic process of natural supramolecular polymers, and such recognition processes allow for dynamic self-alteration, yielding complex polymer systems with extraordinarily high efficiency in their targeted function. We herein show an example of such molecular recognition-controlled kinetic assembly/disassembly processes within artificial supramolecular polymer systems using six-membered hydrogen-bonded supramolecular complexes (rosettes). Electron-rich and poor monomers are prepared that kinetically coassemble through a temperature-controlled protocol into amorphous coaggregates comprising a diverse mixture of rosettes. Over days, the electrostatic interaction between two monomers induces an integrative self-sorting of rosettes. While the electron-rich monomer inherently forms toroidal homopolymers, the additional electrostatic interaction that can also guide rosette association allows helicoidal growth of supramolecular copolymers that are comprised of an alternating array of two monomers. Upon heating, the helicoidal copolymers undergo a catastrophic transition into amorphous coaggregates via entropy-driven randomization of the monomers in the rosette.

Project description:Extending the structural hierarchy and complexity through small-molecular self-assembly is a powerful way to obtain large discrete, functional molecular architecture. A hydrogen-bonded supramolecular organic framework (HSOF) with nanometer-size pores is constructed in a solid state with simple guanosine-monomer self-assembly. To extend the hierarchy of the G-quartet self-assembly to a higher order thanthatofthetraditionalG-quadruplex,H-bondacceptorsontheC-8 position of guanosine are introduced to establish inter-quadruplex linkage via H bonding to N(2)-HB from the neighboring G-quartet. After screening different C-8 substitution groups and various synthesis conditions, HSOF-G1a' is obtained by solvent evaporation under diluted condition. Single-crystal X-ray structure reveals that cubic repeating units formed by G8 are the supermolecule secondary building block (SBU) with large pores (d=34A). To our knowledge, this is the first G-quartet self-assembly with an organized structure beyond cylindrical G-quadruplexes.

Project description:Demonstrated here is a supramolecular approach to fabricate highly ordered monolayered hydrogen- and halogen-bonded graphyne-like two-dimensional (2D) materials from triethynyltriazine derivatives on Au(111) and Ag(111). The 2D networks are stabilized by N⋅⋅⋅H-C(sp) bonds and N⋅⋅⋅Br-C(sp) bonds to the triazine core. The structural properties and the binding energies of the supramolecular graphynes have been investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy in combination with density-functional theory calculations. It is revealed that the N⋅⋅⋅Br-C(sp) bonds lead to significantly stronger bonded networks compared to the hydrogen-bonded networks. A systematic analysis of the binding energies of triethynyltriazine and triethynylbenzene derivatives further demonstrates that the X3 -synthon, which is commonly observed for bromobenzene derivatives, is weaker than the X6 -synthon for our bromotriethynyl derivatives.
