Enhancement of solute diffusion in microdroplets using microrotors under rotational magnetic field.

ABSTRACT: In vertical contact control (VCC), a microdroplet array selectively contacts with an opposite microdroplet array. Generally, VCC is useful for the dispenser mechanism based on solute diffusion between microdroplet pairs. However, sedimentation due to gravity can cause an inhomogeneous distribution of solutes in microdroplets. Therefore, it is necessary to enhance solute diffusion to achieve the accurate dispensing of a large quantity of solute in the direction opposite to that of gravity. Herein, we applied a rotational magnetic field to the microrotors in microdroplets to enhance the solute diffusion in microdroplets. Driven by microrotors, the rotational flow can generate a homogeneous distribution of solutes in microdroplets. We analyzed the diffusion dynamics of solutes using a phenomenological model, and the results showed that the rotation of microrotors can increase the diffusion constant of solutes.

Resonant oscillation of droplets under an alternating electric field to enhance solute diffusion.

Project description:This study investigates a novel microfluidic mixing technique that uses the resonant oscillation of coalescent droplets. During the vertical contact-separation process, solutes are initially separated as a result of the combined effects of diffusion and gravity. We show that the application of alternating current (AC) voltage to microelectrodes below the droplets causes a resonant oscillation, which enhances the even distribution of the solute. The difference in concentration between the top and bottom droplets exhibits frequency dependence and indicates the existence of a particular AC frequency that results in a homogeneous concentration. This frequency corresponds to the resonance frequency of the droplet oscillation that is determined using particle tracking velocimetry. To understand the mixing process, a phenomenological model based on the equilibrium between surface tension, viscosity, and electrostatic force was developed. This model accurately predicted the resonance frequency of droplet flow and was consistent with the experimental results. These results suggest that the resonant oscillation of droplets driven by AC voltage significantly enhances the diffusion of solutes, which is an effective approach to microfluid mixing.

Enhancement of mixture pollutant biodegradation efficiency using a bacterial consortium under static magnetic field.

Project description:One of the main challenges of bioremediation is to define efficient protocols with low environmental impact and high removal rates, such as static magnetic field (SMF). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of SMF exposure on the biodegradation rate of a mixture of pollutants using three bacterial strains which were isolated and identified from the Bizerte lagoon: Pseudomonas stutzeri LBR (KC157911), Cupriavidus metallidurans LBJ (KU659610) and Rhodococcus equi LBB (KU743870). To recognize the improvement role of SMF, the culture was submitted to a pre-treatment with SMF with an induction equal to 200 mT for 5 hours, after that the degradation experiment was followed with individual strains and with a consortium. Results showed an increase by 20% in the growth of the exposed bacterial population compared to controls, and 98% of biodegradation of DDT and 90% for BaP after 30 days of follow-up. This encouraging data opens new perspectives for a bioremediation bioprocess using SMF.

Proper balance of solvent-solute and solute-solute interactions in the treatment of the diffusion of glucose using the Drude polarizable force field.

Project description:Motivated by underestimation of the diffusion constant of glucose in aqueous solution at high glucose concentrations we performed additional optimization of the Drude polarizable hexopyranose monosaccharide force field. This indicated aggregation of the glucose at higher concentrations, which is a concern for studies of complex glycan systems such as the HIV Envelope where high effective concentrations of sugars are present. High-level quantum mechanical calculations were undertaken on water monohydrate-glucose interactions, on water cluster-glucose interactions and on glucose-glucose dimers in stacked (parallel) and perpendicular orientations. Optimization of the nonbond and dihedral parameters targeting these data yielded a revised model that showed improved agreement with experimental aqueous diffusion data. However, limitations in the diffusion constants were still present. These were due to the SWM4-NDP inherently overestimating the diffusion constant of water, a problem that was validated by calculation of the aqueous diffusion constants using the SWM6-NDP water model. In addition, results show the water diffusion constant to be significantly overestimated at high glucose concentrations though the glucose diffusion is in satisfactory agreement with experiment. These results indicate the subtle balance of water-sugar, water-water and sugar-sugar interactions that needs to be properly modeled to account for the full range of aqueous behavior of sugars in aqueous solution.

MRI magnetic field stimulates rotational sensors of the brain.

Project description:Vertigo in and around magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines has been noted for years [1, 2]. Several mechanisms have been suggested to explain these sensations [3, 4], yet without direct, objective measures, the cause is unknown. We found that all of our healthy human subjects developed a robust nystagmus while simply lying in the static magnetic field of an MRI machine. Patients lacking labyrinthine function did not. We use the pattern of eye movements as a measure of vestibular stimulation to show that the stimulation is static (continuous, proportional to static magnetic field strength, requiring neither head movement nor dynamic change in magnetic field strength) and directional (sensitive to magnetic field polarity and head orientation). Our calculations and geometric model suggest that magnetic vestibular stimulation (MVS) derives from a Lorentz force resulting from interaction between the magnetic field and naturally occurring ionic currents in the labyrinthine endolymph fluid. This force pushes on the semicircular canal cupula, leading to nystagmus. We emphasize that the unique, dual role of endolymph in the delivery of both ionic current and fluid pressure, coupled with the cupula's function as a pressure sensor, makes magnetic-field-induced nystagmus and vertigo possible. Such effects could confound functional MRI studies of brain behavior, including resting-state brain activity.

Modification of crystal anisotropy and enhancement of magnetic moment of Co-doped SnO2 thin films annealed under magnetic field.

Project description:Co-doped SnO2 thin films were grown by sputtering technique on SiO2/Si(001) substrates at room temperature, and then, thermal treatments with and without an applied magnetic field (HTT) were performed in vacuum at 600°C for 20 min. HTT was applied parallel and perpendicular to the substrate surface. Magnetic M(H) measurements reveal the coexistence of a strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) signal and a ferromagnetic (FM) component. The AFM component has a Néel temperature higher than room temperature, the spin axis lies parallel to the substrate surface, and the highest magnetic moment m =7 μB/Co at. is obtained when HTT is applied parallel to the substrate surface. Our results show an enhancement of FM moment per Co(+2) from 0.06 to 0.42 μB/Co at. for the sample on which HTT was applied perpendicular to the surface. The FM order is attributed to the coupling of Co(+2) ions through electrons trapped at the site of oxygen vacancies, as described by the bound magnetic polaron model. Our results suggest that FM order is aligned along [101] direction of Co-doped SnO2 nanocrystals, which is proposed to be the easy magnetization axis.

Translational and rotational diffusion of a small globular protein under crowded conditions.

Project description:Protein-protein interaction is the fundamental step of biological signal transduction. Interacting proteins find each other by diffusion. To gain insight into diffusion under the crowded conditions found in cells, we used nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) to measure the effects of solvent additives on the translational and rotational diffusion of the 7.4 kDa globular protein, chymotrypsin inhibitor 2. The additives were glycerol and the macromolecular crowding agent, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). Both translational diffusion and rotational diffusion decrease with increasing solution viscosity. For glycerol, the decrease obeys the Stokes-Einstein and Stokes-Einstein Debye laws. Three types of deviation are observed for PVP: the decrease in diffusion with increased viscosity is less than predicted, this negative deviation is greater for rotational diffusion, and the negative deviation increases with increasing PVP molecular weight. We discuss our results in terms of other studies on the effects of macromolecules on globular protein diffusion.

Electric-Field Manipulation of Magnetic Chirality in a Homo-Ferro-Rotational Helimagnet.

Project description:Ferro-rotational (FR) materials, renowned for their distinctive material functionalities, present challenges in the growth of homo-FR crystals (i.e., single FR domain). This study explores a cost-effective approach to growing homo-FR helimagnetic RbFe(SO4)2 (RFSO) crystals by lowering the crystal growth temperature below the TFR threshold using the high-pressure hydrothermal method. Through polarized neutron diffraction experiments, it is observed that nearly 86% of RFSO crystals consist of a homo-FR domain. Notably, RFSO displays remarkable stability in the FR phase, with an exceptionally high TFR of ≈573 K. Furthermore, RFSO exhibits a chiral helical magnetic structure with switchable ferroelectric polarization below 4 K. Importantly, external electric fields can induce a single magnetic domain state and manipulate its magnetic chirality. The findings suggest that the search for new FR magnets with outstanding material properties should consider magnetic sulfates as promising candidates.

Anomalous enhancement in interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy through uphill diffusion.

Project description:We observed interfacial chemical sharpening due to uphill diffusion in post annealed ultrathin multilayer stack of Co and Pt, which leads to enhanced interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). This is surprising as these elements are considered as perfectly miscible. This chemical sharpening was confirmed through quantitative energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) spectroscopy and intensity distribution of images taken on high angle annular dark field (HAADF) detector in Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopic (STEM) mode. This observation demonstrates an evidence of miscibility gap in ultrathin coherent Co/Pt multilayer stacks.

Threshold magnetic field as a universal criterion for the selective transport of magnetized particles in microdroplets.

Project description:Transportation of magnetized particles (MPs) against gravity is possible by applying a magnetic field to the particles. This transport phenomenon of MPs in microdroplets can be quantitatively assessed by determining the contribution of individual forces acting on the MPs. We studied the selective transportation of MPs in microdroplets. MPs in microdroplets were transported in the opposite direction to gravity when we applied an external magnetic field larger than a threshold value. We modulated the intensity of the external magnetic field and selectively manipulated the MPs. As a result, MPs were separated into different microdroplets based on their magnetic properties. Our quantitative investigation of transport dynamics shows that the threshold magnetic field depends only on the magnetic susceptibility and the density of MPs. This is a universal criterion for the selective transport of magnetized targets such as magnetized cells in microdroplets.

Non-invasive enhancement of intracortical solute clearance using transcranial focused ultrasound.

Project description:Transport of interstitial fluid and solutes plays a critical role in clearing metabolic waste from the brain. Transcranial application of focused ultrasound (FUS) has been shown to promote localized cerebrospinal fluid solute uptake into the brain parenchyma; however, its effects on the transport and clearance of interstitial solutes remain unknown. We demonstrate that pulsed application of low-intensity FUS to the rat brain enhances the transport of intracortically injected fluorescent tracers (ovalbumin and high molecular-weight dextran), yielding greater parenchymal tracer volume distribution compared to the unsonicated control group (ovalbumin by 40.1% and dextran by 34.6%). Furthermore, FUS promoted the drainage of injected interstitial ovalbumin to both superficial and deep cervical lymph nodes (cLNs) ipsilateral to sonication, with 78.3% higher drainage observed in the superficial cLNs compared to the non-sonicated hemisphere. The application of FUS increased the level of solute transport visible from the dorsal brain surface, with ~ 43% greater area and ~ 19% higher fluorescence intensity than the unsonicated group, especially in the pial surface ipsilateral to sonication. The sonication did not elicit tissue-level neuronal excitation, measured by an electroencephalogram, nor did it alter the molecular weight of the tracers. These findings suggest that nonthermal transcranial FUS can enhance advective transport of interstitial solutes and their subsequent removal in a completely non-invasive fashion, offering its potential non-pharmacological utility in facilitating clearance of waste from the brain.
