Solid-to-solid polymorphic phase transitions in two isostructural Bi(III) complexes with 1-phenylethyl-N-ethylthiosemicarbazide and halogens.

ABSTRACT: Two isostructural (in room temperature) complexes of Bi(III) with halogens and sulfur ligands have been investigated in terms of the solid-to-solid phase transitions indicated by temperature. Both chloride and bromide (X) complexes of the general formula (µ₂-X)-(BiX₂L₂)₂ exhibit some phase transitions between 100 and 333 K, which, apart from the numerous similarities, show significant differences, which have been noted and analyzed in detail in this paper by using different techniques, i.e., powder and single crystal diffraction or DSC. The obtained results have also been collated with those obtained for solid solutions of both complexes.

The Rich Solid-State Phase Behavior of dl-Aminoheptanoic Acid: Five Polymorphic Forms and Their Phase Transitions.

Project description:The rich landscape of enantiotropically related polymorphic forms and their solid-state phase transitions of dl-2-aminoheptanoic acid (dl-AHE) has been explored using a range of complementary characterization techniques, and is largely exemplary of the polymorphic behavior of linear aliphatic amino acids. As many as five new polymorphic forms were found, connected by four fully reversible solid-state phase transitions. Two low temperature forms were refined in a high Z' crystal structure, which is a new phenomenon for linear aliphatic amino acids. All five structures consist of two-dimensional hydrogen-bonded bilayers interconnected by weak van der Waals interactions. The single-crystal-to-single-crystal phase transitions involve shifts of bilayers and/or conformational changes in the aliphatic chain. Compared to two similar phase transitions of the related amino acid dl-norleucine, the enthalpies of transition and NMR chemical shift differences are notably smaller in dl-aminoheptanoic acid. This is explained to be a result of both the nature of the conformational changes and the increased chain length, weakening the interactions between the bilayers.

Solid-State [2+2] Photoreaction of Isostructural Cd(II) Metal Complexes and Solid-State Fluorescence.

Project description:A green method to synthesize cyclobutane derivatives has been developed over the past three decades in the form of solid-state [2+2] photochemical reactions. These solid-state reactions also play a major role in the structural transformation of hybrid materials. In this regard, crystal engineering has played a major role in designing photoreactive molecular systems. Here, we report three novel binuclear Cd(II) complexes with the molecular formula [Cd2(4spy)4L4], where 4spy = 4-styryl pyridine and L = p-toluate (1); 4-fluorobenzoate (2); and 3-fluorobenzoate (3). Although three different benzoates are used, all three complexes are isostructural, as corroborated through SCXRD experiments. Structural analysis also helped in identifying two potential photoreactions. These are both intra- and intermolecular in nature and are driven by the head-to-head (HH) and head-to-tail (HT) alignment of 4spy linkers within these metal complexes. 1H NMR spectroscopy studies showed evidence of a quantitative head-to-head photoreaction in all these three complexes, and SCXRD analysis of the recrystallization of the photoproducts also provided confirmation. TGA studies of these photoreactive complexes showed an increase in the thermal stability of the complexes due to the solid-state photoreaction. Photoluminescence studies of these complexes have been conducted, showing a blue shift in emission spectra across all three cases after the photoreaction.

Polymorphic Phase Transitions in Carbamazepine and 10,11-Dihydrocarbamazepine.

Project description:Temperature-induced phase transitions in carbamazepine (CBZ) and 10,11-dihydrocarbamazepine (DHC) were studied by simultaneous differential scanning calorimetry-X-ray diffraction in this work. The transitions generally involve a transitional melt phase which is quickly followed by recrystallisation. The expansions of the unit cell as a function of temperature could be quantified and allow us to determine a directional order of stability in relation to the lattice constants. Dihydrocarbamazepine form II undergoes a conversion to form I by a localised melt phase. Carbamazepine (CBZ) form IV converts to form I at 182 °C, again by a localised intermediate melt phase. CBZ form II converted to form I at 119 °C by a pathway that appears to have included some melting, and form III underwent a part melt-recrystallisation and a part sublimation-recrystallisation to form I.

Monitoring Polymorphic Phase Transitions in Flufenamic Acid Amorphous Solid Dispersions Using Hyphenated X-ray Diffraction-Differential Scanning Calorimetry.

Project description:Flufenamic acid (FFA) is a highly polymorphic drug molecule with nine crystal structures reported in the Cambridge Structural Database. This study explores the use of synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction combined with differential scanning calorimetry to study crystallization and polymorphic phase transitions upon heating FFA-polymer amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs). Ethyl cellulose (EC, 4 cp) and hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) grades with different viscosities and substitution patterns were used to prepare dispersions with FFA at 5:1, 2:1, 1:1, and 1:5 w/w drug/polymer ratios by quench cooling. We employed a 6 cp HPMC 2910 material and two HPMC 2208 samples at 4000 and 100 000 cp. Hyphenated X-ray diffraction (XRD)-differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies show that the 6 and 100 000 cp HPMCs and 4 cp EC polymers can stabilize FFA form IV by inhibiting the transition to form I during heating. It appears that the polymers stabilize FFA in both amorphous and metastable forms via a combination of intermolecular interactions and viscosity effects. Increasing the polymer content of the ASD also inhibits polymorphic transitions, with drug/polymer ratios of 1:5 w/w resulting in FFA remaining amorphous during heating. The comparison of FFA ASDs prepared with different samples of HPMCs and ECs suggests that the chemical substitution of the polymer (HPMC 2208 has 19-24% methoxy groups and 4-12% hydroxypropyl groups, while HPMC 2910 has 28-30% methoxy groups and 7-12% hydroxypropyl groups) plays a more significant role in directing polymorphic transitions than the viscosity. A previously unreported polymorph of FFA was also noted during heating but its structure could not be determined.

Solid-solid phase transitions via melting in metals.

Project description:Observing solid-solid phase transitions in-situ with sufficient temporal and spatial resolution is a great challenge, and is often only possible via computer simulations or in model systems. Recently, a study of polymeric colloidal particles, where the particles mimic atoms, revealed an intermediate liquid state in the transition from one solid to another. While not yet observed there, this finding suggests that such phenomena may also occur in metals and alloys. Here we present experimental evidence for a solid-solid transition via the formation of a metastable liquid in a 'real' atomic system. We observe this transition in a bulk glass-forming metallic system in-situ using fast differential scanning calorimetry. We investigate the corresponding transformation kinetics and discuss the underlying thermodynamics. The mechanism is likely to be a feature of many metallic glasses and metals in general, and may provide further insight into phase transition theory.

Compression-rate dependence of pressure-induced phase transitions in Bi.

Project description:It is qualitatively well known that kinetics related to nucleation and growth can shift apparent phase boundaries from their equilibrium value. In this work, we have measured this effect in Bi using time-resolved X-ray diffraction with unprecedented 0.25 ms time resolution, accurately determining phase transition pressures at compression rates spanning five orders of magnitude (10-2-103 GPa/s) using the dynamic diamond anvil cell. An over-pressurization of the Bi-III/Bi-V phase boundary is observed at fast compression rates for different sample types and stress states, and the largest over-pressurization that is observed is ΔP = 2.5 GPa. The work presented here paves the way for future studies of transition kinetics at previously inaccessible compression rates.

Electronic structure comparisons of isostructural early d- and f-block metal(iii) bis(cyclopentadienyl) silanide complexes.

Project description:We report the synthesis of the U(iii) bis(cyclopentadienyl) hypersilanide complex [U(Cp'')2{Si(SiMe3)3}] (Cp'' = {C5H3(SiMe3)2-1,3}), together with isostructural lanthanide and group 4 M(iii) homologues, in order to meaningfully compare metal-silicon bonding between early d- and f-block metals. All complexes were characterised by a combination of NMR, EPR, UV-vis-NIR and ATR-IR spectroscopies, single crystal X-ray diffraction, SQUID magnetometry, elemental analysis and ab initio calculations. We find that for the [M(Cp'')2{Si(SiMe3)3}] (M = Ti, Zr, La, Ce, Nd, U) series the unique anisotropy axis is conserved tangential to ; this is governed by the hypersilanide ligand for the d-block complexes to give easy plane anisotropy, whereas the easy axis is fixed by the two Cp'' ligands in f-block congeners. This divergence is attributed to hypersilanide acting as a strong σ-donor and weak π-acceptor with the d-block metals, whilst f-block metals show predominantly electrostatic bonding with weaker π-components. We make qualitative comparisons on the strength of covalency to derive the ordering Zr > Ti ≫ U > Nd ≈ Ce ≈ La in these complexes, using a combination of analytical techniques. The greater covalency of 5f3 U(iii) vs. 4f3 Nd(iii) is found by comparison of their EPR and electronic absorption spectra and magnetic measurements, with calculations indicating that uranium 5f orbitals have weak π-bonding interactions with both the silanide and Cp'' ligands, in addition to weak δ-antibonding with Cp''.

Metastable-solid phase diagrams derived from polymorphic solidification kinetics.

Project description:Nonequilibrium processes during solidification can lead to kinetic stabilization of metastable crystal phases. A general framework for predicting the solidification conditions that lead to metastable-phase growth is developed and applied to a model face-centered cubic (fcc) metal that undergoes phase transitions to the body-centered cubic (bcc) as well as the hexagonal close-packed phases at high temperatures and pressures. Large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of ultrarapid freezing show that bcc nucleates and grows well outside of the region of its thermodynamic stability. An extensive study of crystal-liquid equilibria confirms that at any given pressure, there is a multitude of metastable solid phases that can coexist with the liquid phase. We define for every crystal phase, a solid cluster in liquid (SCL) basin, which contains all solid clusters of that phase coexisting with the liquid. A rigorous methodology is developed that allows for practical calculations of nucleation rates into arbitrary SCL basins from the undercooled melt. It is demonstrated that at large undercoolings, phase selections made during the nucleation stage can be undone by kinetic instabilities amid the growth stage. On these bases, a solidification-kinetic phase diagram is drawn for the model fcc system that delimits the conditions for macroscopic grains of metastable bcc phase to grow from the melt. We conclude with a study of unconventional interfacial kinetics at special interfaces, which can bring about heterogeneous multiphase crystal growth. A first-order interfacial phase transformation accompanied by a growth-mode transition is examined.

A combined approach to characterize ligand-induced solid-solid phase transitions in biomacromolecular crystals.

Project description:Solid-solid phase transitions (SSPTs) are widespread naturally occurring phenomena. Understanding the molecular mechanisms and kinetics of SSPTs in various crystalline materials, however, has been challenging due to technical limitations. In particular, SSPTs in biomacromolecular crystals, which may involve large-scale changes and particularly complex sets of interactions, are largely unexplored, yet may have important implications for time-resolved crystallography and for developing synthetic biomaterials. The adenine riboswitch (riboA) is an RNA control element that uses ligand-induced conformational changes to regulate gene expression. Crystals of riboA, upon the addition of a ligand, undergo an SSPT from monoclinic to triclinic to orthorhombic. Here, solution atomic force microscopy (AFM) and polarized video microscopy (PVM) are used to characterize the multiple transition states throughout the SSPT in both the forward and the reverse directions. This contribution describes detailed protocols for growing crystals directly on mica or glass surfaces for AFM and PVM characterization, respectively, as well as methods for image processing and phase-transition kinetics analysis.
