Does controlling shareholders' share pledge exacerbate excessive financialization of enterprises?-Evidence from performance pressure perspective.

ABSTRACT: Based on the perspective of performance pressure, we explore the influence of controlling shareholders' share pledge on excessive financialization behavior of enterprises and its internal mechanism. The results show that the share pledge of controlling shareholders is positively correlated with the excessive financialization behavior of enterprises. After the controlling shareholder's share pledge, the actual performance of the enterprise is lower than expected, causing the short-sighted behavior of the management, which makes the management willing to conspire with the controlling shareholder to cause the excessive financialization of the enterprise. The results are especially evident among the uncertainty of economic policy is low, the industry competition is not fierce and the executives have overseas experience.

Project description:States encourage listed companies to use stock repurchase to elevate the market value of listed firms. After China's promulgation of the new Company Law in 2018, the number of listed companies that issued stock repurchase notices has increased, and the frequency is also increasing. But whether market value management is the real incentive for the action remains debatable. To reduce the risk of pledges, controlling shareholders may use stock repurchases to maintain the security of control rights, and stock repurchase notice may become a tool for controlling shareholders to manage pledge risks. From the perspective of pledge risk management, this paper selects the listed companies from 2012 to 2019 and finds that the share pledge of the controlling shareholder affects the stock repurchase behavior of listed companies by affecting the current pledge risk and the quality of information disclosure plays the interactive role between the two.

Study on the ownership balance and the efficiency of mixed ownership enterprises from the perspective of heterogeneous shareholders.

Project description:Based on the database data of Chinese industrial enterprises from 2000 to 2007 and the LP method, this paper measures the total factor productivity of enterprises and investigates the effect of different mixed ownership forms on enterprises' efficiency and the effect of heterogeneous ownership balance on the mixed ownership enterprises' efficiency. The state-owned enterprise and mixed ownership enterprise are identified by the enterprise's paid-up capital. The results show that, on the whole, for the mixed ownership enterprise, the higher the diversification degree of the shareholders is, the higher the efficiency becomes, and in different types of industries, the mixed forms of shareholders have different effects on the efficiency of enterprises. The heterogeneous ownership balance and the enterprise efficiency show nonlinear U-type relationships. Both the higher and lower heterogeneous ownership balance degrees will promote the enterprise's efficiency. However, when the ownership balance degree is in the range of [0.2 0.5], the increase in ownership balance will lead to the decline of enterprise efficiency. Therefore, when introducing non-state-owned capital, state-owned enterprises should take full account of their own characteristics by rationally controlling the shareholding ratio of non-state-owned capital and play the positive role of a mixed ownership structure in corporate governance with appropriate ownership balances.

Does managerial myopia promote enterprises over-financialization? Evidence from listed firms in China.

Project description:This paper analyzes the potential shortsightedness of enterprise managers through annual reports. Additionally, we use corporate financial statement data to measure enterprises over-financialization in terms of resource allocation. After testing with a causal inference model, we find that firms with managerial myopia significantly contribute to over-financialization. It remains robust even after the instrumental variable of whether the manager has experienced a famine is used. Furthermore, financial distress and financing constraints amplify the inclination of short-term-focused managers to amass greater financial assets.

Share pledge and accounting conservatism in share-pledging firms: Evidence from a natural experiment in China.

Project description:This paper focuses on firms in which insiders pledge their shares as collateral for loans. By investigating a natural experiment-China's enactment of provisions on share reductions that restrict pledge creditors' cashing-out behavior-we find that pledging firms exhibited more conservative financial reporting after the implementation than non-pledging firms. This effect was pronounced in firms with a higher ratio of pledged shares, a longer maturation period of the pledged shares, and more concentrated pledge creditors. Additionally, we show that pledging firms increased their accounting conservatism after the shock, leading to a lower risk of margin calls and stock price crashes. The effect on accounting conservatism was stronger in firms with controlling pledgers or when the pledge creditors were banks. Our results remained consistent after we performed several robustness tests. These behaviors are economically logical because the provisions heighten creditors' liquidity risk and the potential losses of loan default. Pledging shareholders embrace more accounting conservatism to mitigate creditors' concerns about agency costs and avoid triggering margin calls. Our findings provide direct support that creditors have a real demand for accounting conservatism and highlight the impact of shareholder-creditor conflicts on the financial reporting policies of pledging firms.

Empirical prediction of patent pledge financing of pharmaceutical enterprises-A case study in Jiangsu China.

Project description:Financing by patent pledge is an important way for small- and medium-sized pharmaceutical enterprises to address financing problems. In this study, eight indexes are analyzed considering both the pledge patent value and pledger credit value. And a prediction model for the patent pledge financing amount for pharmaceutical enterprises is constructed for the first time using the analytic hierarchy process and the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method. Three levels of financing amount are concluded through the prediction model and prediction results corresponding with the financing amount are displayed. This model was designed to help small- and medium-sized pharmaceutical enterprises get access to financing through patent pledge to relieve their financial stress. At the same time, it provides guides for pledgees and policymakers to improve the efficiency and quality of patent pledge. This work is reliable and valid in that it constructs this prediction model based on systematical data from official data sources.

State equity participation and financing constraints of private enterprises in China: Based on the competitive pressure perspective.

Project description:This study examines the impact of state participation on the alleviation of financing constraints faced by private Chinese enterprises. The analysis is based on data collected from a sample of 2,256 private Chinese enterprises surveyed by the World Bank in 2011 and 2013, and a sample of 3,197 listed enterprises in China from 2009 to 2020. The empirical findings demonstrate that (1) State equity participation can effectively alleviate the financial constraints faced by enterprises, and its approach is to alleviate financing constraints by lessening the competitive pressure on mixed-equity enterprises. (2) Anxiety related to survival and development that arises from competitive pressures compels private enterprises to seek competitive advantages through new investments. Consequently, private enterprises' demand for external capital has increased. However, the conversion of capital requirements into external financing applications has become increasingly challenging due to deficiencies in enterprises' internal cognitive processes regarding financial information. (3) Heterogeneity analysis reveals that state equity participation has a more pronounced impact on alleviating the financing constraints faced by emerging, non-group, and non-listed enterprises.

Impact of managerial overconfidence on abnormal audit fee: From the perspective of balance mechanism of shareholders.

Project description:Overconfidence, as a psychological feature that is difficult to measure, means that managers are overconfident in their management ability, investment judgment ability and knowledge richness, thus overestimating their ability and making irrational behavior. Based on the sample of Chinese listed firms from 2014 to 2018, we measure managerial overconfidence in terms of age, gender, education, position and salary, and analyzed the relationship between overconfidence, abnormal audit fees, and the balance mechanism of shareholders. The research results show that there is a significant positive correlation between managerial overconfidence and abnormal audit fees, and the balance mechanism of shareholders can significantly inhibit the positive correlation between managerial overconfidence and abnormal audit fees. The research results of this paper are conducive to the supervision department to further improve the relevant supervision measures, improve the audit quality, and provide theoretical support for the more specific requirements of audit fee information disclosure.

The effect of service outsourcing on labor income share: Measuring labor income share from the global value chains perspective.

Project description:Inspired by the positive impact of service outsourcing in Chery and other enterprises on human resources, this paper explores the impact of service outsourcing on labor income share. This paper introduces a framework to analyze how value added is distributed between capital and labor along the mix of inputs from different countries and sectors participating in global value chains and examines the effect of service outsourcing on the labor share income. Using the World Input-Output Database (WIOD) and OECD Inter-Country Input-Output (OECD- ICIO) table, this paper utilizes the WWZ decomposition method of global value chains (GVCs) to quantify labor share income. The results show that: (1) service outsourcing significantly contributes to the increase in labor share income; (2) Offshore outsourcing had a statistically stronger effect on labor share income after the financial crisis, both compared to the past and to onshore outsourcing; (3) Offshore outsourcing has a higher coefficient in countries with low technology. For ease of comparison, only onshore outsourcing shows a statistically significant difference among various service types; (4) The analysis using Chinese data reveals that the coefficient of offshore outsourcing is negative and statistically significant, indicating that industries with higher levels of service outsourcing have a lower labor share income.

Does the reform of the phased reduction of the pension insurance contribution rate benefit the labor income share of enterprises?

Project description:IntroductionThis paper develops a theoretical model to clarify the mechanisms by which pension insurance contribution rate affects the labor income share of enterprises and conducts empirical validation.MethodsUtilizing a difference-in-differences approach, this paper analyzes data from China's A-share listed companies from 2013 to 2018 to examine the impact and mechanism of the phased reduction of the pension insurance contribution rate on enterprise labor income share.Results and discussionThe phased reduction of the pension insurance contribution rate is beneficial for increasing enterprise labor income shares, with significant variations observed across regions and enterprise ownership types. The actual pension insurance contribution rate and capital intensity are two potential mechanisms through which this reform affects labor income share.ConclusionIn summary, we establish a causal link between the reform of the phased reduction of the pension insurance contribution rate and enterprise labor income share. This suggests that continuing the reform could increase labor income share, but it necessitates enhanced collection and management of pension insurance contributions, along with differentiated policies based on regional and enterprise ownership characteristics.
