Quality of life and relapse of Opioid Use Disorder: a scoping review protocol.

ABSTRACT:

Introduction

Quality of life (QoL) greatly influences the outcomes of patients with mental illnesses and there is evidence that there is an association between QoL and the relapse of Opioid Use Disorder (OUD). However, no reviews elucidate the relationship between QoL and the relapse of OUD. This document provides a scoping review protocol that aims to systematically chart and synthesise the published, unpublished and grey literature about the relationship between QoL and relapse of OUD.

Methods and analysis

The enhanced six-stage methodological framework for scoping reviews of Arksey and O'Malley will be used. The main research question guiding the review will be: What is the relationship between QoL and relapse of OUD? Peer-reviewed and non-peer-reviewed articles, reports, and policy documents will be eligible to be included in the review with no limits on publication date. PubMed, PsycINFO, Google Scholar, Scopus, OVID and Cochrane Library will be among the databases searched. We shall identify grey literature from Google Scholar, ProQuest database, Grey Source Index, Open Grey and OpenDOAR. The reporting of the review will follow the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews. Criteria for evidence inclusion and exclusion will be used during literature screening and mapping.

Ethics and dissemination

Patients and the public will not be involved in the interpretations of the findings, therefore, we shall not seek approval from an ethics committee. Results will be disseminated through publication in a peer-reviewed, scientific journal, conference presentations.

Project description:IntroductionMeasures of health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL) are increasingly important for evaluating healthcare interventions and treatments, understanding the burden of disease, identifying health inequities, allocating health resources and for use in epidemiological studies. Although many HRQoL measures developed for use in adult populations are robust, they are not necessarily designed, or appropriate, to measure HRQoL for children/youth. Furthermore, the appropriateness of HRQoL measures for use with Indigenous child/youth populations has not been closely examined. The aims of this scoping review are to (1) identify and describe empirical studies using HRQoL measures among children/youth (aged 8-17 years) from Indigenous populations within the Pacific Rim, (2) summarise the study designs and modes of HRQoL measure administration, (3) describe the key dimensions of the identified HRQoL measures used among Indigenous populations, including specifically among Māori and (4) map the HRQoL measure dimensions to commonly used Māori models of health.Methods and analysisThe scoping review framework developed by Arksey and O'Malley and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for scoping reviews guidelines will be followed for best practice and reporting. An iterative search of peer-reviewed published empirical research reporting the use of child/youth HRQoL measures among Indigenous populations will be conducted. This literature will be identified across the following five databases: Ovid (Medline), PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and CINHAL. The search will be restricted to papers published in English between January 1990 and June 2020. Two reviewers will independently review the papers in two stages. A third reviewer will resolve any discrepancies that arise. A data charting form will be completed using data extracted from each paper.Ethics and disseminationEthical approval was not required for this scoping review. Dissemination will include publication of the scoping review in a peer-reviewed journal. This scoping review will inform a larger research project (HRC 20/166).

Project description:IntroductionOpioid use disorder (OUD) is characterised by the fifth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistics Manual as a problematic pattern of opioid use (eg, fentanyl, heroin, oxycodone) that leads to clinically significant impairment. OUD diagnoses have risen substantially over the last decade, and treatment services have struggled to meet the demand. Evidence suggests when patients with chronic illnesses are matched with their treatment preferences and engaged in shared decision-making (SDM), health outcomes may improve. However, it is not known whether SDM could impact outcomes in specific substance use disorders such as OUD.Methods and analysisA scoping review will be conducted according to Arksey and O'Malley's framework and by recommendations from Levac et al. The search strategy was developed to retrieve relevant publications from database inception and June 2017. MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Cochrane Database for Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database for Systematic Reviews and reference lists of relevant articles and Google Scholar will be searched. Included studies must be composed of adults with a diagnosis of OUD, and investigate SDM or its constituent components. Experimental, quasi-experimental, qualitative, case-control, cohort studies and cross-sectional surveys will be included. Articles will be screened for final eligibility according to title and abstract, and then by full text. Two independent reviewers will screen excluded articles at each stage. A consultation phase with expert clinicians and policy-makers will be added to set the scope of the work, refine research questions, review the search strategy and identify additional relevant literature. Results will summarise whether SDM impacts health and patient-centred outcomes in OUD.Ethics and disseminationScoping review methodology is considered secondary analysis and does not require ethics approval. The final review will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal, disseminated at relevant academic conferences and will be shared with policy-makers, patients and clinicians.
