ABSTRACT:

Objectives

Readmission to the PICU is associated with worse outcomes, but factors associated with PICU readmission within the same hospitalization remain unclear. We sought to describe the prevalence of, and identify factors associated with, early PICU readmission.

Methods

We performed a retrospective analysis of PICU admissions for patients aged 0 to 26 years in 48 tertiary care children's hospitals between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2019 in the Pediatric Health Information System. We defined early readmission as return to the PICU within 2 calendar days of floor transfer during the same hospitalization.
