A Review of the Feather Mite Genus Lopharalichus Gaud & Atyeo, 1996 (Acariformes: Pterolichidae), with Descriptions of Three New Species from Brazilian Parrots (Psittaciformes: Psittacidae).

ABSTRACT: Feather mites of the genus Lopharalichus Gaud & Atyeo, 1996 (Pterolichidae: Pterolichinae), formerly containing three described species, are associated with New World parrots (Psittaciformes: Psittacidae) of the subfamily Arinae. Three new species of this genus are described: Lopharalichus tuimsp. nov. from Forpus xanthopterygius (Spix, 1824), L. spinosussp. nov. from Ara ararauna (Linnaeus, 1758), and L. chiririsp. nov. from Brotogeris chiriri (Vieillot, 1818). Type specimens of the previously described Lopharalichus species were examined, and a key to the known species is provided.

Draft genome sequencing data of a feather mite, Amerodectes protonotaria Hernandes 2018 (Acariformes: Proctophyllodidae).

Project description:Feather mites are ubiquitous, permanent, obligate ectosymbionts of avian hosts and are a valuable natural system for studying host-symbiont evolutionary and ecological dynamics at multiple levels of biological organization. However, a lack of a sequenced genome impedes molecular studies using this system. Therefore, we present the first draft genome of a symbiotic feather mite, Amerodectes protonotaria Hernandes 2018. The genome sequence data presented here were derived from an individual female mite that was collected in the field from Protonotaria citrea, its only known host species. Short read sequence data were obtained using an Illumina NovaSeq 6000 platform. From these data, we assembled a 59,665,063 bp draft genome consisting of 2,399 contigs. Raw short reads and the assembled genome sequence are available at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI)'s Sequence Read Archive (SRA) under BioProject PRJNA884722. The data presented here are beneficial for future research on the biology and evolution of closely related mites and the genomics of host-symbiont interactions.

Comparative mitogenomic analyses of Amazona parrots and Psittaciformes.

Project description:Amazon parrots are long-lived birds with highly developed cognitive skills, including vocal learning. Several parrot mitogenomes have been sequenced, but important aspects of their organization and evolution are not fully understood or have limited experimental support. The main aim of the present study was to describe the mitogenome of the blue-fronted Amazon, Amazona aestiva, and compare it to other mitogenomes from the genus Amazona and the order Psittaciformes. We observed that mitogenomes are highly conserved among Amazon parrots, and a detailed analysis of their duplicated control regions revealed conserved blocks. Population level analyses indicated that the specimen analyzed here seems to be close to A. aestiva individuals from Bahia state. Evolutionary relationships of 41 Psittaciformes species and three outgroups were inferred by BEAST. All relationships were retrieved with high support.

Detection of aves polyomavirus 1 (APyV) and beak and feather disease virus (BFDV) in exotic and native Brazilian Psittaciformes.

Project description:There are several viral diseases in captive birds. Aves polyomavirus 1 (APyV) and beak and feather disease virus (BFDV) are among the most important in Psittaciformes. The occurrence of these agents has been widely described in various parts of the world; however, little is known about these viruses in South America. APyV and BFDV can cause high morbidity with feather alterations and even mortality. Other variable symptoms could appear depending on the host's age and taxonomic group. The aim of this study was to detect APyV and BFDV in samples of captive exotic and native Psittaciformes in Brazil. Samples from 120 birds with clinical signs compatible with APyV and/or BFDV were examined. In total, 57 (47.5%) positive birds were found, of which 21 (17.5%) had APyV and 41 (34.17%) had BFDV. Five animals (4.17%) presented concurrent infection. Phylogenetic analysis showed a divergent APyV strain and a diversity of Brazilian BFDV strains. Our study shows that these viruses are present at a significant frequency in captive exotic and native Psittaciformes in Brazil. This study also highlights the need for constant epidemiologic surveillance to preserve bird biodiversity with a focus on endangered Psittaciformes species.

Feather mites (Acariformes, Astigmata) from marine birds of the Barton Peninsula (King George Island, Antarctica), with descriptions of two new species.

Project description:We report on the first investigation of feather mites associated with birds living on the Barton Peninsula (King George Island, Antarctica). We found seven feather mite species of the superfamily Analgoidea from four host species. Two new species are described from two charadriiform hosts: Alloptes (Sternalloptes) antarcticussp. nov. (Alloptidae) from Stercorariusmaccormicki Saunders (Stercorariidae), and Ingrassiachionis sp. nov. (Xolalgidae) from Chionisalbus (Gmelin) (Chionidae). Additionally, we provide partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI), which was utilized as a DNA barcode, for all seven feather mite species.

Complete mitochondrial genome of Agapornis lilianae (Psittaciformes: Psittacidae), with its phylogenetic analysis.

Project description:In this paper, we reported the complete mitogenome of Agapornis lilianae. A. lilianae mitogenome is 16,720bp base pairs long. The overall base compositions of complete mitogenomes of A. lilianae is 29.66% A, 21.5% T, 34.59% C, 14.25% G. All genes exhibit the typical mitochondrial gene arrangement and transcribing directions. The phylogenetic analysis based on 21 mitochondrial sequence data suggested that A. lilianae are closely related to the same genus specie Agapornis roseicollis. The results obtained here would be useful for the conservation and phylogeny of A. lilianae.

The first complete mitochondrial genome of Blossom-headed Parakeet Psittacula roseata (Psittaciformes: Psittacidae).

Project description:Blossom-headed Parakeet Psittacula roseate is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species because of its habitat loss, and declining population. In this study, we first sequenced and described the complete mitochondrial genome and phylogeny of P. roseata. The whole genome of P. roseata was 16,814 bp in length, and contained 14 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, 2 ribosome RNA genes, and 1 non-coding control regions. The overall base composition of the mitochondrial DNA was 31.88% for A, 22.00% for T, 32.88% for C, 13.23% for G, with a GC content of 46.11%. A phylogenetic tree strongly supported that genus Psittacula closely related with genus Eclectus by highly probability.

Characterization and Comparative Analysis of Complete Mitogenomes of Three Cacatua Parrots (Psittaciformes: Cacatuidae).

Project description:Cacatua alba, Cacatua galerita, and Cacatua goffiniana are parrots of the family Cacatuidae. Wild populations of these species are declining with C. alba listed by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) as Endangered. In this study, complete mitogenomes were sequenced for a comparative analysis among the Cacatua species, and a detailed analysis of the control region. Mitogenome lengths of C. alba,C. galerita, and C. goffiniana were 18,894, 18,900, and 19,084 bp, respectively. They included 13 protein coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, 24 transfer RNA genes, three degenerated genes, and two control regions. Ten conserved motifs were found in three domains within each of the two control regions. For an evolution of duplicated control regions of Cacatua, domain I and the 3' end of domain III experienced an independent evolution, while domain II and most of the regions of domain III was subjected to a concerted evolution. Based on a phylogenetic analysis of 37 mitochondrial genes, the genus Cacatua formed a well-supported, monophyletic, crown group within the Cacatuidae. Molecular dating results showed that Cacatua diverged from other genera of Cacatuinae in the middle of Miocene.

A novel method for semen collection and artificial insemination in large parrots (Psittaciformes).

Project description:The paper described a novel technique for semen collection in large psittacines (patent pending), a procedure which was not routinely possible before. For the first time, a large set of semen samples is now available for analysis as well as for artificial insemination. Semen samples of more than 100 psittacine taxa were collected and analysed; data demonstrate large differences in the spermatological parameters between families, indicating an ecological relationship with breeding behaviour (polygamous versus monogamous birds). Using semen samples for artificial insemination resulted in the production of offspring in various families, such as Macaws and Cockatoos, for the first time ever. The present technique represents a breakthrough in species conservation programs and will enable future research into the ecology and environmental factors influencing endangered species.

The multifactorial nature of beak and skull shape evolution in parrots and cockatoos (Psittaciformes).

Project description:BackgroundThe Psittaciformes (parrots and cockatoos) are characterised by their large beaks, and are renowned for their ability to produce high bite forces. These birds also possess a suite of modifications to their cranial architecture interpreted to be adaptations for feeding on mechanically resistant foods, yet the relationship between cranial morphology and diet has never been explicitly tested. Here, we provide a three-dimensional geometric morphometric analysis of the developmental and biomechanical factors that may be influencing the evolution of psittaciformes' distinctive cranial morphologies.ResultsContrary to our own predictions, we find that dietary preferences for more- or less- mechanically resistant foods have very little influence on beak and skull shape, and that diet predicts only 2.4% of the shape variation in psittaciform beaks and skulls. Conversely, evolutionary allometry and integration together predict almost half the observed shape variation, with phylogeny remaining an important factor in shape identity throughout our analyses, particularly in separating cockatoos (Cacatuoidea) from the true parrots (Psittacoidea).ConclusionsOur results are similar to recent findings about the evolutionary trajectories of skull and beak shape in other avian families. We therefore propose that allometry and integration are important factors causing canalization of the avian head, and while diet clearly has an influence on beak shape between families, this may not be as important at driving evolvability within families as is commonly assumed.

The complete mitochondrial genome of yellow-bibbed lory, Lorius chlorocercus (Psittaciformes Psittacidae), with its phylogenetic relationship.

Project description:In this study, the complete 17,855 bp mitochondrial genome of Lorius chlorocercus was obtained using sanger sequencing. It consists of 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs, 2 ribosomal RNAs, and a control region. The overall base composition is 22.5% T, 33.18% C, 30.42% A, and13.9% G. The phylogenetic tree was constructed using neighbour-joining (NJ) method based on 19 parrot species. Phylogenetic analysis showed that L. chlorocercus was closest to Melopsittacus undulates. The complete mitogenome data would be useful for further study on the molecular evolution of L. chlorocercus.
