Monitoring the Air Quality in an HVAC System via an Energy Harvesting Device.

ABSTRACT: The energy consumption of a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system represents a large amount of the total for a commercial or civic building. In order to optimize the system performance and to increase the comfort of people living or working in a building, it is necessary to monitor the relevant parameters of the circulating air flux. To this end, an array of sensors (i.e., temperature, humidity, and CO₂ percentage sensors) is usually deployed along the aeraulic ducts and/or in various rooms. Generally, these sensors are powered by wires or batteries, but both methods have some drawbacks. In this paper, a possible solution to these drawbacks is proposed. It presents a wireless sensor node powered by an Energy Harvesting (EH) device acted on by the air flux itself. The collected data are transmitted to a central unit via a LoRa radio channel. The EH device can be placed in air ducts or close to air outlets.

Ocean wave energy harvesting with high energy density and self-powered monitoring system.

Project description:Constructing a ocean Internet of Things requires an essential ocean environment monitoring system. However, the widely distributed existing ocean monitoring sensors make it impractical to provide power and transmit monitored information through cables. Therefore, ocean environment monitoring systems particularly need a continuous power supply and wireless transmission capability for monitoring information. Consequently, a high-strength, environmentally multi-compatible, floatable metamaterial energy harvesting device has been designed through integrated dynamic matching optimization of materials, structures, and signal transmission. The self-powered monitoring system breaks through the limitations of cables and batteries in the ultra-low-frequency wave environment (1 to 2 Hz), enabling real-time monitoring of various ocean parameters and wirelessly transmitting the data to the cloud for post-processing. Compared with solar and wind energy in the ocean environment, the energy harvesting device based on the defective state characteristics of metamaterials achieves a high-energy density (99 W/m3). For the first time, a stable power supply for the monitoring system has been realized in various weather conditions (24 h).

Near-Zero-Energy Smart Battery Thermal Management Enabled by Sorption Energy Harvesting from Air.

Project description:Effective battery thermal management (BTM) is critical to ensure fast charging/discharging, safe, and efficient operation of batteries by regulating their working temperatures within an optimal range. However, the existing BTM methods not only are limited by a large space, weight, and energy consumption but also hardly overcome the contradiction of battery cooling at high temperatures and battery heating at low temperatures. Here we propose a near-zero-energy smart battery thermal management (SBTM) strategy for both passive heating and cooling based on sorption energy harvesting from air. The sorption-induced reversible thermal effects due to metal-organic framework water vapor desorption/sorption automatically enable battery cooling and heating depending on the local battery temperature. We demonstrate that a self-adaptive SBTM device with MIL-101(Cr)@carbon foam can control the battery temperature below 45 °C, even at high charge/discharge rates in hot environments, and realize self-preheating to ∼15 °C in cold environments, with an increase in the battery capacity of 9.2%. Our approach offers a promising route to achieving compact, liquid-free, high-energy/power-density, low-energy consumption, and self-adaptive smart thermal management for thermo-related devices.

Global potential for harvesting drinking water from air using solar energy.

Project description:Access to safely managed drinking water (SMDW) remains a global challenge, and affects 2.2 billion people1,2. Solar-driven atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) devices with continuous cycling may accelerate progress by enabling decentralized extraction of water from air3-6, but low specific yields (SY) and low daytime relative humidity (RH) have raised questions about their performance (in litres of water output per day)7-11. However, to our knowledge, no analysis has mapped the global potential of AWH12 despite favourable conditions in tropical regions, where two-thirds of people without SMDW live2. Here we show that AWH could provide SMDW for a billion people. Our assessment-using Google Earth Engine13-introduces a hypothetical 1-metre-square device with a SY profile of 0.2 to 2.5 litres per kilowatt-hour (0.1 to 1.25 litres per kilowatt-hour for a 2-metre-square device) at 30% to 90% RH, respectively. Such a device could meet a target average daily drinking water requirement of 5 litres per day per person14. We plot the impact potential of existing devices and new sorbent classes, which suggests that these targets could be met with continued technological development, and well within thermodynamic limits. Indeed, these performance targets have been achieved experimentally in demonstrations of sorbent materials15-17. Our tools can inform design trade-offs for atmospheric water harvesting devices that maximize global impact, alongside ongoing efforts to meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with existing technologies.

Piezoelectric ultrasound energy-harvesting device for deep brain stimulation and analgesia applications.

Project description:Supplying wireless power is a challenging technical problem of great importance for implantable biomedical devices. Here, we introduce a novel implantable piezoelectric ultrasound energy-harvesting device based on Sm-doped Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (Sm-PMN-PT) single crystal. The output power density of this device can reach up to 1.1 W/cm2 in vitro, which is 18 times higher than the previous record (60 mW/cm2). After being implanted in the rat brain, under 1-MHz ultrasound with a safe intensity of 212 mW/cm2, the as-developed device can produce an instantaneous effective output power of 280 μW, which can immediately activate the periaqueductal gray brain area. The rat electrophysiological experiments under anesthesia and behavioral experiments demonstrate that our wireless-powered device is well qualified for deep brain stimulation and analgesia applications. These encouraging results provide new insights into the development of implantable devices in the future.

An ultraflexible energy harvesting-storage system for wearable applications.

Project description:The swift progress in wearable technology has accentuated the need for flexible power systems. Such systems are anticipated to exhibit high efficiency, robust durability, consistent power output, and the potential for effortless integration. Integrating ultraflexible energy harvesters and energy storage devices to form an autonomous, efficient, and mechanically compliant power system remains a significant challenge. In this work, we report a 90 µm-thick energy harvesting and storage system (FEHSS) consisting of high-performance organic photovoltaics and zinc-ion batteries within an ultraflexible configuration. With a power conversion efficiency surpassing 16%, power output exceeding 10 mW cm-2, and an energy density beyond 5.82 mWh cm-2, the FEHSS can be tailored to meet the power demands of wearable sensors and gadgets. Without cumbersome and rigid components, FEHSS shows immense potential as a versatile power source to advance wearable electronics and contribute toward a sustainable future.

Multifunctional Device based on phosphor-piezoelectric PZT: lighting, speaking, and mechanical energy harvesting.

Project description:We demonstrated the tri-functional device based on all powder-processing methods by using ZnS powder as phosphor layer and piezoelectric material as dielectric layer. The fabricated device generated the electroluminescent (EL) light from phosphor and the sound from piezoelectric sheet under a supply of external electric power, and additionally harvested the reverse-piezoelectric energy to be converted into EL light. Under sinusoidal applied voltage, EL luminances were exponentially increased with a maximum luminous efficiency of 1.3 lm/W at 40 V and 1,000 Hz, and sound pressure levels (SPLs) were linearly increased. The EL luminances were linearly dependent on applied frequency while the SPLs showed the parabolic increase behavior below 1,000 Hz and then the flat response. The temperature dependence on EL luminances and SPLs was demonstrated; the former was drastically increased and the latter was slightly decreased with the increase of temperature. Finally, as an energy harvesting application, the piezoelectric-induced electroluminescence effect was demonstrated by applying only mechanical pressure to the device without any external electric power.

A System-Level Approach towards a Hybrid Energy Harvesting Glove.

Project description:This paper presents a novel wearable hybrid harvester system as a glove that contains four distinct scavenging modules of flexible transducer film, photosensitive 3D dual-gate thin-film transistor, and a particular power management box. Each single module is formed by a piezoelectric-charge-gated TFT (PCGTFT). The reported system is capable of scavenging energy from two various free of charge energy sources (Piezoelectric plus Photoelectric). Aforesaid system unlike other state-of-the-arts overcomes several key challenges in interfacing, storage and power management. Harvested energy which is administered through power and storage management system ultimately lightens a typical light emitting diode (LED), testifies capability of such glove to power up some low-power electronic devices.

Hybrid Microwave/Solar Energy Harvesting System Using 3D-Printed Metasurfaces.

Project description:In this study, a hybrid energy harvesting system based on a conventional solar cell combined with 3D-printed metasurface units is studied. Millimeter-scale metasurface units were fabricated via the stereolithography technique, and then they were covered with conductive silver paint, in order to achieve high electric conductivity. The performance of single, as well as two-unit metasurface harvesters, was thoroughly investigated. It was found that both of them produced voltage, which peaks at their resonance frequency, demonstrating efficient energy harvesting behavior in the microwave regime. Then, the metasurface units were connected with a commercially available photovoltaic panel and the performance of the hybrid system was examined under different environmental conditions, modifying the light intensity (i.e., light, dark and shadow). It was shown that the proposed hybrid harvesting system produces a sizable voltage output, which persists, even in the case when one of the components does not contribute. Furthermore, the performance of the hybrid harvester is found to be adequate enough, although optimization of the harvesting circuit is required in order to achieve high efficiency levels. All in all, the presented experimental evidence clearly indicates the realization of a rather promising hybrid energy harvesting system, exploiting two distinct ambient energy sources, namely light and microwaves.

Charging-free electrochemical system for harvesting low-grade thermal energy.

Project description:Efficient and low-cost systems are needed to harvest the tremendous amount of energy stored in low-grade heat sources (<100 °C). Thermally regenerative electrochemical cycle (TREC) is an attractive approach which uses the temperature dependence of electrochemical cell voltage to construct a thermodynamic cycle for direct heat-to-electricity conversion. By varying temperature, an electrochemical cell is charged at a lower voltage than discharge, converting thermal energy to electricity. Most TREC systems still require external electricity for charging, which complicates system designs and limits their applications. Here, we demonstrate a charging-free TREC consisting of an inexpensive soluble Fe(CN)6(3-/4-) redox pair and solid Prussian blue particles as active materials for the two electrodes. In this system, the spontaneous directions of the full-cell reaction are opposite at low and high temperatures. Therefore, the two electrochemical processes at both low and high temperatures in a cycle are discharge. Heat-to-electricity conversion efficiency of 2.0% can be reached for the TREC operating between 20 and 60 °C. This charging-free TREC system may have potential application for harvesting low-grade heat from the environment, especially in remote areas.
