A single step wet chemical approach to bifunctional ultrathin (ZnO)₆₂(Fe₂O₃)₃₈ dendritic nanosheets.

ABSTRACT: At the ultrathin scale, nanomaterials exhibit interesting chemical and physical properties, like flexibility, and polymer-like rheology. However, to limit the dimensions of composite nanomaterials at the ultrathin level is still a challenging task. Herein, by adopting a new low temperature single step and single pot wet chemical approach, we have successfully fabricated two dimensional (2D) mixed oxide ZnO-Fe₂O₃ dendritic nanosheets (FZDNSs). Various control experimental outcomes demonstrate that precursor salts of both the metals are crucial for the formation of stable 2D FZDNSs. The obtained FZDNSs not only exhibit the best photoreduction performance but also much enhanced electrocatalytic performance. This work will provide a promising avenue for the synthesis of cost effective transition metal mixed oxide based 2D nanosheets having wide ranging applications.

Ultrathin Fe-NiO nanosheets as catalytic charge reservoirs for a planar Mo-doped BiVO4 photoanode.

Project description:The energy conversion efficiency of a photoelectrochemical system is intimately connected to a number of processes, including light absorption, charge excitation, separation and transfer processes. Of these processes, the charge transfer rate at the electrode|electrolyte interface is the slowest and, hence, the rate-limiting step causing charge accumulation. Such an understanding underpins efforts focused on applying highly active electrocatalysts, which may contribute to the overall performance by augmenting surface charge accumulation, prolonging charge lifetime or facilitating charge transfer. How the overall effect depends on these individual possible mechanisms has been difficult to study previously. Aiming at advancing knowledge about this important interface, we applied first-order serial reactions to elucidate the charge excitation, separation and recombination kinetics on the semiconductor|electrocatalyst interfaces in air. The study platform for the present work was prepared using a two-step Mo-doped BiVO4 film modified with an ultrathin Fe-doped NiO nanosheet, which was derived from an Fe-doped α-Ni(OH)2 nanosheet by a convenient precipitation and ion-exchange method. The simulation results of the transient surface photovoltage (TSPV) data showed that the surface charge accumulation was significantly enhanced, even at an extremely low coverage (0.12-120 ppm) using ultra-thin Fe-NiO nanosheets. Interestingly, no improvement in the charge separation rate constants or reduction of recombination rate constants was observed under our experimental conditions. Instead, the ultra-thin Fe-NiO nanosheets served as a charge storage layer to facilitate the catalytic process for enhanced performance.

One-step synthesis of ZnO nanosheets: a blue-white fluorophore.

Project description:Zinc oxide is synthesised at low temperature (80°C) in nanosheet geometry using a substrate-free, single-step, wet-chemical method and is found to act as a blue-white fluorophore. Investigation by atomic force microscopy, electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction confirms zinc oxide material of nanosheet morphology where the individual nanosheets are polycrystalline in nature with the crystalline structure being of wurtzite character. Raman spectroscopy indicates the presence of various defects, while photoluminescence measurements show intense green (centre wavelength approximately 515 nm) blue (approximately 450 nm), and less dominant red (approximately 640 nm) emissions due to a variety of vacancy and interstitial defects, mostly associated with surfaces or grain boundaries. The resulting colour coordinate on the CIE-1931 standard is (0.23, 0.33), demonstrating potential for use as a blue-white fluorescent coating in conjunction with ultraviolet emitting LEDs. Although the defects are often treated as draw-backs of ZnO, here we demonstrate useful broadband visible fluorescence properties in as-prepared ZnO.

Advanced Ultrathin RuPdM (M = Ni, Co, Fe) Nanosheets Electrocatalyst Boosts Hydrogen Evolution.

Project description:The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is one of the most significant reactions in the electrolysis water process, and electrocatalysts which possess high mass activity and excellent stability are the most important driving factors to improve the efficiency of HER. As for the efficient commercially electrocatalyst, Pt/C is limited in development because of its high cost. Therefore, the study of non-Pt high-efficiency catalysts is particularly important at this moment. Here, we creatively report for the first time a kind of RuPdM (M= Ni, Co, Fe) ultrathin nanosheets (NSs), which exhibit extraordinary electrochemical properties for HER under alkaline conditions. The overpotential of optimized trimetallic Ru38Pd34Ni28 ultrathin NSs is only 20 mV (10 mA cm-2), and the mass activity reaches 6.15 A mg-1 noble metal at -0.07 V vs RHE. It can be compared to Pt-based electrocatalysts, which have the highest mass activity currently reported. The durability tests also prove that the stability of the electrocatalyst is outstanding. DFT calculations disclose that the flexible modulation of electronic structures of RuPd ultrathin NSs is achieved by utilizing the additional 3d transition metals Fe, Co, and Ni. In particular, the Ni-3d bands act as the continuous electron-supply center for Ru to ensure an efficient electron transfer toward the adsorbates. Meanwhile, the stable Pd sites are critical for coupling the O-2pπ orbital in the initial H2O splitting with a facile barrier. This work will open up a new era of non-Pt materials for alkaline hydrogen evolution toward practical application.

Colloidal Synthesis of NbS2 Nanosheets: From Large-Area Ultrathin Nanosheets to Hierarchical Structures.

Project description:Layered NbS2, a member of group-V transition metal dichalcogenides, was synthesized via a colloidal synthesis method and employed as a negative material for a supercapacitor. The morphologies of NbS2 can be tuned from ultrathin nanosheets to hierarchical structures through dynamics controls based on growth mechanisms. Electrochemical energy storage measurements present that the ultrathin NbS2 electrode exhibits the highest rate capability due to having the largest electrochemical surface area and its efficient ion diffusion. Meanwhile, the hierarchical NbS2 shows the highest specific capacitance at low current densities for small charge transfer resistance, displays 221.4 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 and 117.1 F g-1 at 10 A g-1, and cycling stability with 78.9% of the initial specific capacitance after 10,000 cycles. The aggregate or stacking of nanosheets can be suppressed effectively by constructing hierarchical structure NbS2 nanosheets.

Simultaneous detection of l-aspartic acid and glycine using wet-chemically prepared Fe3O4@ZnO nanoparticles: real sample analysis.

Project description:An easy and reliable wet-chemical method was used to synthesize iron oxide doped zinc oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4@ZnO NPs) at a low-temperature under alkaline medium. The electrochemical characteristics of Fe3O4@ZnO NPs were investigated by using different electrochemical techniques such as UV-vis, FTIR, XRD, FESEM, XEDS, and XPS. A sensor was fabricated by deposition of a thin covering of Fe3O4@ZnO NPs onto a flat dried glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with a polymer matrix with conducting characteristics (Nafion, Nf). l-Aspartic acid and glycine were detected simultaneously by using the modified GCE/Fe3O4@ZnO NPs/Nf sensor in enzyme free conditions. Calibration curves were found to be linear for l-aspartic acid (R 2 = 0.9593) and glycine (R 2 = 0.8617) over a broad range of detected bio-molecule concentration (100.0 pM to 100.0 mM). The analytical sensing parameters, for example sensitivity, linear dynamic range (LDR), limit of detection (LOD), and limit of quantification (LOQ), of the proposed sensor (GCE/Fe3O4@ZnO NPs/Nf) were calculated at two potentials (+0.4 V and +0.7 V) from the calibration plot for l-aspartic acid (126.58 pM μM-1 cm2, 100.0 pM to 10.0 μM, ≈97.5 pM, and 325.0 mM) and glycine (316.46 pM μM-1 cm2, 1.0 μM to 1.0 mM, ≈13.5 pM, and 450.0 mM), respectively, by using a reliable current-voltage (I-V) technique. The synthesis of Fe3O4@ZnO NPs by means of a wet-chemical route is a good advancement for the development of doped nanomaterial based sensors from the perspective of enzyme-free detection of biological molecules in health-care areas. This proposed GCE/Fe3O4@ZnO NPs/Nf sensor was used for the particular detection of l-aspartic acid and glycine in real samples (human and rabbit serum and urine) and found to achieve reasonable and accepted results.

Fabrication of Ultrathin Zn(OH)2 Nanosheets as Drug Carriers.

Project description:Ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) porous Zn(OH)2 nanosheets (PNs) have been fabricated by using one-dimensional Cu nanowires as backbones. PNs have thicknesses of about 3.8 nm and pore sizes of 4~10 nm. To form "smart" porous nanosheets, DNA aptamers were covalently conjugated on the surface of PNs. These ultrathin nanosheets show good biocompatibility, efficient cellular uptake, and promising pH-stimulated drug release.

Highly Active Fe Sites in Ultrathin Pyrrhotite Fe7S8 Nanosheets Realizing Efficient Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution.

Project description:Identification of active sites in an electrocatalyst is essential for understanding of the mechanism of electrocatalytic water splitting. To be one of the most active oxygen evolution reaction catalysts in alkaline media, Ni-Fe based compounds have attracted tremendous attention, while the role of Ni and Fe sites played has still come under debate. Herein, by taking the pyrrhotite Fe7S8 nanosheets with mixed-valence states and metallic conductivity for examples, we illustrate that Fe could be a highly active site for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution. It is shown that the delocalized electrons in the ultrathin Fe7S8 nanosheets could facilitate electron transfer processes of the system, where d orbitals of FeII and FeIII would be overlapped with each other during the catalytic reactions, rendering the ultrathin Fe7S8 nanosheets to be the most efficient Fe-based electrocatalyst for water oxidation. As expected, the ultrathin Fe7S8 nanosheets exhibit promising electrocatalytic oxygen evolution activities, with a low overpotential of 0.27 V and a large current density of 300 mA cm-2 at 0.5 V. This work provides solid evidence that Fe could be an efficient active site for electrocatalytic water splitting.

Immobilization of Fe-Doped Ni2P Particles Within Biomass Agarose-Derived Porous N,P-Carbon Nanosheets for Efficient Bifunctional Oxygen Electrocatalysis.

Project description:A feasible and green sol-gel method is proposed to fabricate well-distributed nano-particulate Fe-Ni2P incorporated in N, P-codoped porous carbon nanosheets (Fe-Ni2P@N,P-CNSs) using biomass agarose as a carbon source, and ethylenediamine tetra (methylenephosphonic acid) (EDTMPA) as both the N and P source. The doped Fe in Ni2P is essential for a substantial increase in intrinsic catalytic activity, while the combined N,P-containing porous carbon matrix with a better degree of graphitization endows the prepared Fe-Ni2P@N,P-CNSs catalyst with a high specific surface area and improved electrical conductivity. Benefiting from the specific chemical composition and designed active site structure, the as-synthesized Fe-Ni2P@N,P-CNSs manifests a satisfying catalytic performance toward both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in an alkaline solution, with low overpotential, small Tafel slope and long-term durability, relative to the counterparts (Fe-free Ni12P5/Ni2P2O7@N,P-CNSs and CNSs) with single components and even comparable to Pt/C and RuO2 catalysts. The present work broadens the exploration of efficient bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts using earth abundant biomass as carbon sources based on non-noble metals for low cost renewable energy conversion/storage.

Ultrathin Two-Dimensional Fe-Co Bimetallic Oxide Nanosheets for Separator Modification of Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Project description:The shuttle effect is understood to be the most significant issue that needs to be solved to improve the performance of lithium-sulfur batteries. In this study, ultrathin two-dimensional Fe-Co bimetallic oxide nanosheets were prepared using graphene as a template, which could rapidly catalyze the conversion of polysulfides and inhibit the shuttle effect. Additionally, such ultrathin nanostructures based on graphene provided sufficient active sites and fast diffusion pathways for lithium ions. Taking into account the aforementioned benefits, the ultrathin two-dimensional Fe-Co bimetallic oxide nanosheets modified separator assembled lithium-sulfur batteries delivered an incredible capacity of 1044.2 mAh g-1 at 1 C and retained an excellent reversible capacity of 859.4 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles. Even under high loading, it still achieved high area capacity and good cycle stability (92.6% capacity retention).

Ultrathin 2D Fe-Nanosheets Stabilized by 2D Mesoporous Silica: Synthesis and Application in Ammonia Synthesis.

Project description:Developing high-performance Fe-based ammonia catalysts through simple and cost-efficient methods has received an increased level of attention. Herein, we report for the first time, the synthesis of two-dimensional (2D) FeOOH nanoflakes encapsulated by mesoporous SiO2 (mSiO2) via a simple solution-based method for ammonia synthesis. Due to the sticking of the mSiO2 coating layers and the limited spaces in between, the Fe after reduction retains the 2D morphology, showing high resistance against the sintering in the harsh Haber-Bosch process. Compared to supported Fe particles dispersed on mSiO2 spheres, the coated catalyst shows a significantly improved catalytic activity by 50% at 425 °C. Thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) reveals the existence of a higher density of reactive sites for N2 activation in the 2D Fe catalyst, which is possibly coupled to a larger density of surface defect sites (kinks, steps, point defects) that are generally considered as active centers in ammonia synthesis. Besides the structural impact of the coating on the 2D Fe, the electronic one is elucidated by partially substituting Si with Al in the coating, confirmed by 29Si and 27Al magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR). An increased apparent activation energy (Ea) of the Al-containing catalyst evidences an influence on the nature of the active site. The herein-developed stable 2D Fe nanostructures can serve as an example of a 2D material applied in catalysis, offering the chance of a rational catalyst design based on a stepwise introduction of various promoters, in the coating and on the metal, maintaining the spatial control of the active centers.
