Entanglement propagation and dynamics in non-additive quantum systems.

ABSTRACT: The prominent collective character of long-range interacting quantum systems makes them promising candidates for quantum technological applications. Yet, lack of additivity overthrows the traditional picture for entanglement scaling and transport, due to the breakdown of the common mechanism based on excitations propagation and confinement. Here, we describe the dynamics of the entanglement entropy in many-body quantum systems with a diverging contribution to the internal energy from the long-range two body potential. While in the strict thermodynamic limit entanglement dynamics is shown to be suppressed, a rich mosaic of novel scaling regimes is observed at intermediate system sizes, due to the possibility to trigger multiple resonant modes in the global dynamics. Quantitative predictions on the shape and timescales of entanglement propagation are made, paving the way to the observation of these phases in current quantum simulators. This picture is connected and contrasted with the case of local many body systems subject to Floquet driving.

Classical synchronization indicates persistent entanglement in isolated quantum systems.

Project description:Synchronization and entanglement constitute fundamental collective phenomena in multi-unit classical and quantum systems, respectively, both equally implying coordinated system states. Here, we present a direct link for a class of isolated quantum many-body systems, demonstrating that synchronization emerges as an intrinsic system feature. Intriguingly, quantum coherence and entanglement arise persistently through the same transition as synchronization. This direct link between classical and quantum cooperative phenomena may further our understanding of strongly correlated quantum systems and can be readily observed in state-of-the-art experiments, for example, with ultracold atoms.

Energy cost of entanglement extraction in complex quantum systems.

Project description:What is the energy cost of extracting entanglement from complex quantum systems? Operationally, we may wish to actually extract entanglement. Conceptually, we may wish to physically understand the entanglement distribution as a function of energy. This is important, especially for quantum field theory vacua, which are extremely entangled. Here we build a theory to understand the energy cost of entanglement extraction. First, we consider a toy model, and then we define the entanglement temperature, relating energy cost to extracted entanglement. Next, we give a physical argument quantifying the energy cost of entanglement extraction in some quantum field vacua. There the energy cost depends on the spatial dimension: in one dimension, for example, it grows exponentially with extracted entanglement. Next, we provide approaches to bound the energy cost of extracting entanglement more generally. Finally, we look at spin chain models numerically to calculate the entanglement temperature using matrix product states.

Confinement and entanglement dynamics on a digital quantum computer.

Project description:Confinement describes the phenomenon when the attraction between two particles grows with their distance, most prominently found in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) between quarks. In condensed matter physics, confinement can appear in quantum spin chains, for example, in the one dimensional transverse field Ising model (TFIM) with an additional longitudinal field, famously observed in the quantum material cobalt niobate or in optical lattices. Here, we establish that state-of-the-art quantum computers have reached capabilities to simulate confinement physics in spin chains. We report quantitative confinement signatures of the TFIM on an IBM quantum computer observed via two distinct velocities for information propagation from domain walls and their mesonic bound states. We also find the confinement induced slow down of entanglement spreading by implementing randomized measurement protocols for the second order Rényi entanglement entropy. Our results are a crucial step for probing non-perturbative interacting quantum phenomena on digital quantum computers beyond the capabilities of classical hardware.

Quantum Entanglement in Double Quantum Systems and Jaynes-Cummings Model.

Project description:In the paper, we proposed a new approach to producing the qubits in electron transport in low-dimensional structures such as double quantum wells or double quantum wires (DQW). The qubit could arise as a result of quantum entanglement of two specific states of electrons in DQW structure. These two specific states are the symmetric and antisymmetric (with respect to inversion symmetry) states arising due to tunneling across the structure, while entanglement could be produced and controlled by means of the source of nonclassical light. We examined the possibility to produce quantum entanglement in the framework of Jaynes-Cummings model and have shown that at least in principle, the entanglement can be achieved due to series of "revivals" and "collapses" in the population inversion due to the interaction of a quantized single-mode EM field with a two-level system.

Distinguish between typical non-Hermitian quantum systems by entropy dynamics.

Project description:Non-Hermitian (NH) quantum systems attract research interest increasingly in recent years, among which the PT-symmetric, P-pseudo-Hermitian and their anti-symmetric counterpart systems are focused much more. In this work, we extend the usage of entropy to distinguish time-evolutions of different classes and phases of typical NH-systems. In detail, we investigate the entropy dynamics of two-level NH-systems after quantum decoherence induced by single-qubit projective measurements, finding that it depends on both the initial states and the selection of the computational bases of the measurements. In a general case, we show how to distinguish all the eight phases of the above NH-systems step by step, in which process three different initial states are necessary if the basis of measurement is fixed. We propose how the distinguishing process is realized in quantum simulation, in which quantum tomography is not needed. Our investigations can be applied to judge phase transitions of non-Hermitian systems.

Supercritical entanglement in local systems: Counterexample to the area law for quantum matter.

Project description:Quantum entanglement is the most surprising feature of quantum mechanics. Entanglement is simultaneously responsible for the difficulty of simulating quantum matter on a classical computer and the exponential speedups afforded by quantum computers. Ground states of quantum many-body systems typically satisfy an "area law": The amount of entanglement between a subsystem and the rest of the system is proportional to the area of the boundary. A system that obeys an area law has less entanglement and can be simulated more efficiently than a generic quantum state whose entanglement could be proportional to the total system's size. Moreover, an area law provides useful information about the low-energy physics of the system. It is widely believed that for physically reasonable quantum systems, the area law cannot be violated by more than a logarithmic factor in the system's size. We introduce a class of exactly solvable one-dimensional physical models which we can prove have exponentially more entanglement than suggested by the area law, and violate the area law by a square-root factor. This work suggests that simple quantum matter is richer and can provide much more quantum resources (i.e., entanglement) than expected. In addition to using recent advances in quantum information and condensed matter theory, we have drawn upon various branches of mathematics such as combinatorics of random walks, Brownian excursions, and fractional matching theory. We hope that the techniques developed herein may be useful for other problems in physics as well.

Control of entanglement dynamics in a system of three coupled quantum oscillators.

Project description:Dynamical control of entanglement and its connection with the classical concept of instability is an intriguing matter which deserves accurate investigation for its important role in information processing, cryptography and quantum computing. Here we consider a tripartite quantum system made of three coupled quantum parametric oscillators in equilibrium with a common heat bath. The introduced parametrization consists of a pulse train with adjustable amplitude and duty cycle representing a more general case for the perturbation. From the experimental observation of the instability in the classical system we are able to predict the parameter values for which the entangled states exist. A different amount of entanglement and different onset times emerge when comparing two and three quantum oscillators. The system and the parametrization considered here open new perspectives for manipulating quantum features at high temperatures.

Preservation Macroscopic Entanglement of Optomechanical Systems in non-Markovian Environment.

Project description:We investigate dynamics of an optomechanical system under the non-Markovian environment. In the weak optomechanical single-photon coupling regime, we provide an analytical approach fully taking into account the non-Markovian memory effects. When the cavity-bath coupling strength crosses a certain threshold, an oscillating memory state for the classical cavity field is formed. Due to the existence of the non-decay optical bound state, a nonequilibrium optomechanical thermal entanglement is preserved even without external driving laser. Our results provide a potential usage to generate and protect entanglement via non-Markovian environment.

Entanglement-assisted concatenated quantum codes.

Project description:Entanglement-assisted concatenated quantum codes (EACQCs), constructed by concatenating two quantum codes, are proposed. These EACQCs show significant advantages over standard concatenated quantum codes (CQCs). First, we prove that, unlike standard CQCs, EACQCs can beat the nondegenerate Hamming bound for entanglement-assisted quantum error-correction codes (EAQECCs). Second, we construct families of EACQCs with parameters better than the best-known standard quantum error-correction codes (QECCs) and EAQECCs. Moreover, these EACQCs require very few Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) pairs to begin with. Finally, it is shown that EACQCs make entanglement-assisted quantum communication possible, even if the ebits are noisy. Furthermore, EACQCs can outperform CQCs in entanglement fidelity over depolarizing channels if the ebits are less noisy than the qubits. We show that the error-probability threshold of EACQCs is larger than that of CQCs when the error rate of ebits is sufficiently lower than that of qubits. Specifically, we derive a high threshold of 47% when the error probability of the preshared entanglement is 1% to that of qubits.

Homotopy Phases of FQHE with Long-Range Quantum Entanglement in Monolayer and Bilayer Hall Systems.

Project description:Correlated phases in Hall systems have topological character. Multilayer configurations of planar electron systems create the opportunity to change topological phases on demand using macroscopic factors, such as vertical voltage. We present an analysis of such phenomena in close relation to recent experiments with multilayer Hall setups including GaAs and graphene multi-layers. The consequences of the blocking or not of the inter-layer electron tunneling in stacked Hall configurations are analyzed and presented in detail. Multilayer Hall systems are thus tunable topological composite nanomaterials, in the case of graphene-stacked systems by both intra- and inter-layer voltage.
