Selective Oxidation of Methane to Methanol via In Situ H₂O₂ Synthesis.

ABSTRACT: The selective oxidation of methane to methanol, using H₂O₂ generated in situ from the elements, has been investigated using a series of ZSM-5-supported AuPd catalysts of varying elemental composition, prepared via a deposition precipitation protocol. The alloying of Pd with Au was found to offer significantly improved efficacy, compared to that observed over monometallic analogues. Complementary studies into catalytic performance toward the direct synthesis and subsequent degradation of H₂O₂, under idealized conditions, indicate that methane oxidation efficacy is not directly related to H₂O₂ production rates, and it is considered that the known ability of Au to promote the release of reactive oxygen species is the underlying cause for the improved performance of the bimetallic catalysts.

Water-promoted selective photocatalytic methane oxidation for methanol production.

Project description:Converting relatively inert methane into active chemical fuels such as methanol with high selectivity through an energy-saving strategy has remained a grand challenge. Photocatalytic technology consuming solar energy is an appealing alternative for methane reforming. However, the low efficiency and the undesirable formation of low-value products, such as carbon dioxide and ethane, limit the commercial application of photocatalytic technology. Herein, we find a facile and practical water-promoted pathway for photocatalytic methane reforming into methanol, enabling methanol production from methane and oxygen with a high selectivity (>93%) and production rate (21.4 μmol cm-2 h-1 or 45.5 mmol g-1 h-1) on metallic Ag nanoparticle-loaded InGaN nanowires (Ag/InGaN). The experimental XPS and theoretical PDOS analyses reveal that water molecules adsorbed on Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) can promote the electron transfer from InGaN to AgNPs, which enables the formation of partial Ag species with a lower oxidation state in AgNPs. Through the in situ IR spectrum and the reaction pathway simulation studies, these newly formed Ag species induced by water adsorption were demonstrated to be responsible for the highly selective methanol production due to the effective formation of a C-O bond and the optimal desorption of the formed methanol from the surface indium site of the InGaN photocatalyst. This unique water promotion effect leads to a 55-fold higher catalytic rate and 9-fold higher selectivity for methanol production compared to photocatalytic methane reforming without water addition. This finding offers a new pathway for achieving clean solar fuels by photocatalysis-based methane reforming.

Direct oxidation of methane to methanol using CuMoO4.

Project description:Upgrading methane into methanol or other high value-added chemicals is not only beneficial to mitigate the greenhouse effect, but also provides basic raw materials for industrial production. Nowadays, most research is limited to zeolite systems, and it is a considerable challenge to extend the support to metal oxides while achieving a high yield of methanol. In this paper, we take advantage of impregnation methods to synthesise a novel Cu/MoO3 catalyst, which can convert methane to methanol in the gaseous phase. At 600 °C, the Cu(2)/MoO3 catalyst can achieve a maximum STYCH3OH of 47.2 μmol (g-1 h-1) with a molar ratio CH4 : O2 : H2O = 5 : 1.4 : 10. Consequences of SEM, TEM, HRTEM and XRD substantiate that Cu is incorporated into the lattice of MoO3 to form CuMoO4. And transmission infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy together with XPS characterization techniques confirm the generation of CuMoO4, which is the main active site provider. This work provides a new support platform for Cu-based catalyst research in the methane-to-methanol system.

Sub-nanometer Copper Clusters as Alternative Catalysts for the Selective Oxidation of Methane to Methanol with Molecular O2.

Project description:The partial oxidation of methane to methanol with molecular O2 at mild reaction conditions is a challenging process, which is efficiently catalyzed in nature by enzymes. As an alternative to the extensively studied Cu-exchanged zeolites, small copper clusters composed by just a few atoms appear as potential specific catalysts for this transformation. Following previous work in our group that established that the reactivity of oxygen atoms adsorbed on copper clusters is closely linked to cluster size and morphology, we explore by means of DFT calculations the ability of bidimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) Cu5 and Cu7 clusters to oxidize partially methane to methanol. A highly selective Eley-Rideal pathway involving homolytic C-H bond dissociation and a non-adsorbed radical-like methyl intermediate is favored when bicoordinated oxygen atoms, preferentially stabilized at the edges of 2D clusters, are available. Cluster morphology arises as a key parameter determining the nature and reactivity of adsorbed oxygen atoms, opening the possibility to design efficient catalysts for partial methane oxidation based on copper clusters.

Economically viable co-production of methanol and sulfuric acid via direct methane oxidation.

Project description:The direct oxidation of methane to methanol has been spotlighted research for decades, but has never been commercialized. This study introduces cost-effective process for co-producing methanol and sulfuric acid through a direct oxidation of methane. In the initial phase, methane oxidation forms methyl bisulfate (CH3OSO3H), then transformed into methyl trifluoroacetate (CF3CO2CH3) via esterification, and hydrolyzed into methanol. This approach eliminates the need for energy-intensive separation of methyl bisulfate from sulfuric acid by replacing the former with methyl trifluoroacetate. Through the superstructure optimization, our sequential process reduces the levelized cost of methanol to nearly two-fold reduction from the current market price. Importantly, this process demonstrates adaptability to smaller gas fields, assuring its economical operation across a broad range of gas fields. The broader application of this process could substantially mitigate global warming by utilizing methane, leading to a significantly more sustainable and economically beneficial methanol industry.

Electro-assisted methane oxidation to formic acid via in-situ cathodically generated H2O2 under ambient conditions.

Project description:Direct partial oxidation of methane to liquid oxygenates has been regarded as a potential route to valorize methane. However, CH4 activation usually requires a high temperature and pressure, which lowers the feasibility of the reaction. Here, we propose an electro-assisted approach for the partial oxidation of methane, using in-situ cathodically generated reactive oxygen species, at ambient temperature and pressure. Upon using acid-treated carbon as the electrocatalyst, the electro-assisted system enables the partial oxidation of methane in an acidic electrolyte to produce oxygenated liquid products. We also demonstrate a high production rate of oxygenates (18.9 μmol h-1) with selective HCOOH production. Mechanistic analysis reveals that reactive oxygen species such as ∙OH and ∙OOH radicals are produced and activate CH4 and CH3OH. In addition, unstable CH3OOH generated from methane partial oxidation can be additionally reduced to CH3OH on the cathode, and so-produced CH3OH is further oxidized to HCOOH, allowing selective methane partial oxidation.

From Methane to Methanol: Pd-iC-CeO2 Catalysts Engineered for High Selectivity via Mechanochemical Synthesis.

Project description:In the pursuit of selective conversion of methane directly to methanol in the liquid-phase, a common challenge is the concurrent formation of undesirable liquid oxygenates or combustion byproducts. However, we demonstrate that monometallic Pd-CeO2 catalysts, modified by carbon, created by a simple mechanochemical synthesis method exhibit 100% selectivity toward methanol at 75 °C, using hydrogen peroxide as oxidizing agent. The solvent free synthesis yields a distinctive Pd-iC-CeO2 interface, where interfacial carbon (iC) modulates metal-oxide interactions and facilitates tandem methane activation and peroxide decomposition, thus resulting in an exclusive methanol selectivity of 100% with a yield of 117 μmol/gcat at 75 °C. Notably, solvent interactions of H2O2 (aq) were found to be critical for methanol selectivity through a density functional theory (DFT)-simulated Eley-Rideal-like mechanism. This mechanism uniquely enables the direct conversion of methane into methanol via a solid-liquid-gas process.

Selective CO2 electroreduction to methanol via enhanced oxygen bonding.

Project description:The reduction of carbon dioxide using electrochemical cells is an appealing technology to store renewable electricity in a chemical form. The preferential adsorption of oxygen over carbon atoms of intermediates could improve the methanol selectivity due to the retention of C-O bond. However, the adsorbent-surface interaction is mainly related to the d states of transition metals in catalysts, thus it is difficult to promote the formation of oxygen-bound intermediates without affecting the carbon affinity. This paper describes the construction of a molybdenum-based metal carbide catalyst that promotes the formation and adsorption of oxygen-bound intermediates, where the sp states in catalyst are enabled to participate in the bonding of intermediates. A high Faradaic efficiency of 80.4% for methanol is achieved at -1.1 V vs. the standard hydrogen electrode.

Mixed Anion Control of the Partial Oxidation of Methane to Methanol on the β-PtO2 Surface.

Project description:Although the C-H bond of methane is very strong, it can be easily dissociated on the (110) surface of β-PtO2. This is because a very stable Pt-C bond is formed between the coordinatively unsaturated Pt atom and CH3 on the surface. Owing to the stable nature of the Pt-C bond, CH3 is strongly bound to the surface. When it comes to methanol synthesis from methane, the Pt-C bond has to be cleaved to form a C-O bond during the reaction process. However, this is unlikely to occur on the β-PtO2 surface: The activation energy of the process is calculated to be so large as 47.9 kcal/mol. If the surface can be modified in such a way that the ability for the C-H bond activation is maintained but the Pt-C bond is weakened, a catalyst combining the functions of C-H bond cleavage and C-O bond formation can be created. For this purpose, analyzing the orbital interactions on the surface is found to be very useful, resulting in a prediction that the Pt-C bond can be weakened by replacing the O atom trans to the C atom with a N atom. This would be a sort of process to make β-PtO2 a mixed anion compound. Density functional theory simulations of catalytic reactions on the β-PtO2 surface show that the activation energy of the rate-limiting step of methanol synthesis can be reduced to 27.7 kcal/mol by doping the surface with N.

Silver and Copper Dual Single Atoms Boosting Direct Oxidation of Methane to Methanol via Synergistic Catalysis.

Project description:Rationally constructing atom-precise active sites is highly important to promote their catalytic performance but still challenging. Herein, this work designs and constructs ZSM-5 supported Cu and Ag dual single atoms as a proof-of-concept catalyst (Ag1 -Cu1 /ZSM-5 hetero-SAC (single-atom catalyst)) to boost direct oxidation of methane (DOM) by H2 O2 . The Ag1 -Cu1 /ZSM-5 hetero-SAC synthesized via a modified co-adsorption strategy yields a methanol productivity of 20,115 µmol gcat -1 with 81% selectivity at 70 °C within 30 min, which surpasses most of the state-of-the-art noble metal catalysts. The characterization results prove that the synergistic interaction between silver and copper facilitates the formation of highly reactive surface hydroxyl species to activate the C-H bond as well as the activity, selectivity, and stability of DOM compared with SACs, which is the key to the enhanced catalytic performance. This work believes the atomic-level design strategy on dual-single-atom active sites should pave the way to designing advanced catalysts for methane conversion.

Selective photocatalytic aerobic oxidation of methane into carbon monoxide over Ag/AgCl@SiO2.

Project description:Design of active catalysts for chemical utilization of methane under mild conditions is of great importance, but remains a challenging task. Here, we prepared a Ag/AgCl with SiO2 coating (Ag/AgCl@SiO2) photocatalyst for methane oxidation to carbon monoxide. High carbon monoxide production (2.3 μmol h-1) and high selectivity (73%) were achieved. SiO2 plays a key role in the superior performance by increasing the lifetime of the photogenerated charge carriers. Based on a set of semi in situ infrared spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, and electronic property characterization studies, it is revealed that CH4 is effectively and selectively oxidized to CO by the in situ formation of singlet 1O2 via the key intermediate of COOH*. Further study showed that the Ag/AgCl@SiO2 catalyst could also drive valuable conversion using real sunlight under ambient conditions. As far we know, this is the first work on the application of SiO2 modified Ag/AgCl in the methane oxidation reaction.
