Effect of ramp slope on intensity thresholds based on correlation properties of heart rate variability during cycling.

ABSTRACT: An index of heart rate variability (HRV), detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA a1) has gathered interest as a surrogate marker of exercise intensity boundaries. The aim of this report was to examine heart rate variability threshold (HRVT) behavior across different ramp incremental (RI) slopes. Seventeen participants completed a series of three RI (15, 30, and 45 W · min^-1 slopes) with monitoring of gas exchange parameters, heart rate (HR) and HRV. HRVT1 was defined as the V̇O₂ or HR at which DFA a1 reached 0.75 and the HRVT2 at which these values reached 0.5. HRVTs were compared by Pearson's r, Bland-Altman analysis, ICC_3,1 , ANOVA, and paired t-testing. An excellent degree of reliability was seen across all three ramps, with an ICC_3,1 of 0.93 and 0.88 for the HRVT1 V̇O₂ and HR, respectively, and 0.90 and 0.92 for the HRVT2 V̇O₂ and HR, respectively. Correlations between HRVT1/2 of the individual ramps were high with r values 0.84-0.95 for both HR and V̇O₂ . Bland-Altman differences ranged between -1.4 and 1.2 mL · kg^-1 · min^-1 and -2 and +2 bpm. Paired t-testing showed no mean differences between any HRVT1/2 ramp comparisons. Cycling ramp slope does not appear to affect either HRVT1 or HRVT2 in terms of HR or V̇O₂ .

Project description:In the absence of a ⩒o2-work-rate plateau, debate continues regarding the best way to verify that the peak ⩒o2 achieved during incremental exercise (⩒o2peak) is the "true ⩒o2max." Oft-used "secondary criteria" have been questioned in conjunction with the contention that a severe-intensity constant-work-rate "verification bout" should be considered the "gold standard." The purpose of this study was to compare the ⩒o2peak during ramp incremental cycling (RAMP-INC) by a heterogeneous (with respect to body composition and sex) cohort of sedentary individuals with the ⩒o2peak during severe-intensity constant-work-rate cycling (CWR) performed after RAMP-INC at the highest work rate achieved. A secondary purpose was to determine the degree to which traditional and newly-proposed age-dependent secondary criteria (RER, HR) identified RAMP-INC which CWR confirmed were characterized by a submaximal ⩒o2peak. Thirty-five healthy male (n = 19: 33.4 ± 6.3 yrs) and female (26.8 ± 3.6 yrs) sedentary participants performed RAMP-INC followed by CWR. The ⩒o2peak values from the two tests were correlated (r = 0.96; p < 0.01; mean CV = 24%); however, ⩒o2peak for CWR was significantly greater (29.6 ± 7.2 v. 28.6 ± 6.8 mL∙min-1∙kg-1; p < 0.01) with a mean bias of 0.98 mL∙min-1∙kg-1 (z = -2.9, p < 0.01). Both traditional and newly-proposed criterion values for RER were achieved during RAMP-INC by 33 of 35 participants (including 21 of 23 who registered a higher ⩒o2peak on CWR). The traditional HR criterion value was achieved on only seven tests (three of which were confirmed to be characterized by a submaximal ⩒o2peak) while use of less stringent newly-proposed criteria resulted in acceptance of an additional seven tests of which five were confirmed to be submaximal. Severe-intensity CWR to limit of tolerance indicates that RAMP-INC underestimates ⩒o2max in sedentary individuals and both traditional and newly-proposed secondary criteria are ineffective for identifying such tests.

Project description:Objective: In two independent study arms, we determine the effects of strength training (ST) and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) overload on cardiac autonomic modulation by measuring heart rate (HR) and vagal heart rate variability (HRV). Methods: In the study, 37 well-trained athletes (ST: 7 female, 12 male; HIIT: 9 female, 9 male) were subjected to orthostatic tests (HR and HRV recordings) each day during a 4-day baseline period, a 6-day overload microcycle, and a 4-day recovery period. Discipline-specific performance was assessed before and 1 and 4 days after training. Results: Following ST overload, supine HR, and vagal HRV (Ln RMSSD) were clearly increased and decreased (small effects), respectively, and the standing recordings remained unchanged. In contrast, HIIT overload resulted in decreased HR and increased Ln RMSSD in the standing position (small effects), whereas supine recordings remained unaltered. During the recovery period, these responses were reversed (ST: small effects, HIIT: trivial to small effects). The correlations between changes in HR, vagal HRV measures, and performance were weak or inconsistent. At the group and individual levels, moderate to strong negative correlations were found between HR and Ln RMSSD when analyzing changes between testing days (ST: supine and standing position, HIIT: standing position) and individual time series, respectively. Use of rolling 2-4-day averages enabled more precise estimation of mean changes with smaller confidence intervals compared to single-day values of HR or Ln RMSSD. However, the use of averaged values displayed unclear effects for evaluating associations between HR, vagal HRV measures, and performance changes, and have the potential to be detrimental for classification of individual short-term responses. Conclusion: Measures of HR and Ln RMSSD during an orthostatic test could reveal different autonomic responses following ST or HIIT which may not be discovered by supine or standing measures alone. However, these autonomic changes were not consistently related to short-term changes in performance and the use of rolling averages may alter these relationships differently on group and individual level.

Project description:BackgroundDetermining thresholds by measuring blood lactate levels (lactate thresholds) or gas exchange (ventilatory thresholds) that delineate the different exercise intensity domains is crucial for training prescription. This systematic review with meta-analyses aims to assess the overall validity of the first and second heart rate variability - derived threshold (HRVT1 and HRVT2, respectively) by computing global effect sizes for agreement and correlation between HRVTs and reference - lactate and ventilatory (LT-VTs) - thresholds. Furthermore, this review aims to assess the impact of subjects' characteristics, HRV methods, and study protocols on the agreement and correlation between LT-VTs and HRVTs.MethodsSystematic computerised searches for studies determining HRVTs during incremental exercise in humans were conducted. The agreements and correlations meta-analyses were conducted using a random-effect model. Causes of heterogeneity were explored by subgroup analysis and meta-regression with subjects' characteristics, incremental exercise protocols, and HRV methods variables. The methodological quality was assessed using QUADAS-2 and STARDHRV tools. The risk of bias was assessed by funnel plots, fail-safe N test, Egger's test of the intercept, and the Begg and Mazumdar rank correlation test.ResultsFifty included studies (1160 subjects) assessed 314 agreements (95 for HRVT1, 219 for HRVT2) and 246 correlations (82 for HRVT1, 164 for HRVT2) between LT-VTs and HRVTs. The standardized mean differences were trivial between HRVT1 and LT1-VT1 (SMD = 0.08, 95% CI -0.04-0.19, n = 22) and between HRVT2 and LT2-VT2 (SMD = -0.06, 95% CI -0.15-0.03, n = 42). The correlations were very strong between HRVT1 and LT1-VT1 (r = 0.85, 95% CI 0.75-0.91, n = 22), and between HRVT2 and LT2-VT2 (r = 0.85, 95% CI 0.80-0.89, n = 41). Moreover, subjects' characteristics, type of ergometer, or initial and incremental workload had no impact on HRVTs determination.ConclusionHRVTs showed trivial differences and very strong correlations with LT-VTs and might thus serve as surrogates. These results emphasize the usefulness of HRVTs as promising, accessible, and cost-effective means for exercise and clinical prescription purposes.
