Magnetosheath jets at Mars.

ABSTRACT: Plasma entities, known as magnetosheath jets, with higher dynamic pressure than the surrounding plasma, are often seen at Earth. They generate waves and contribute to energy transfer in the magnetosheath. Affecting the magnetopause, they cause surface waves and transfer energy into the magnetosphere, causing throat auroras and magnetic signatures detectable on the ground. We show that jets exist also beyond Earth's environment in the magnetosheath of Mars, using data obtained by the MAVEN spacecraft. Thus, jets can be created also at Mars, which differs from Earth by its smaller bow shock, and they are associated with an increased level of magnetic field fluctuations. Jets couple large and small scales in magnetosheaths in the solar system and can play a similar part in astrophysical plasmas.

Magnetosheath Jets Over Solar Cycle 24: An Empirical Model.

Project description:Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) spacecraft have been sampling the subsolar magnetosheath since the first dayside science phase in 2008, and we finally have observations over a solar cycle. However, we show that the solar wind coverage during these magnetosheath intervals is not always consistent with the solar wind conditions throughout the same year. This has implications for studying phenomena whose occurrence depends strongly on solar wind parameters. We demonstrate this with magnetosheath jets-flows of enhanced earthward dynamic pressure in the magnetosheath. Jets emerge from the bow shock, and some of them can go on and collide into the magnetopause. Their occurrence is highly linked to solar wind conditions, particularly the orientation of the interplanetary magnetic field, as jets are mostly observed downstream of the quasi-parallel shock. We study the yearly occurrence rates of jets recorded by THEMIS over solar cycle 24 (2008-2019) and find that they are biased due to differences in spacecraft orbits and uneven sampling of solar wind conditions during the different years. Thus, we instead use the THEMIS observations and their corresponding solar wind conditions to develop a model of how jet occurrence varies as a function of solar wind conditions. We then use OMNI data of the whole solar cycle to estimate the unbiased yearly jet occurrence rates. For comparison, we also estimate jet occurrence rates during solar cycle 23 (1996-2008). Our results suggest that there is no strong solar cycle dependency in jet formation.

Magnetosheath jets at Jupiter and across the solar system.

Project description:The study of jets in the Earth's magnetosheath has been a subject of extensive investigation for over a decade due to their profound impact on the geomagnetic environment and their close connection with shock dynamics. While the variability of the solar wind and its interaction with Earth's magnetosphere provide valuable insights into jets across a range of parameters, a broader parameter space can be explored by examining the magnetosheath of other planets. Here we report the existence of anti-sunward and sunward jets in the Jovian magnetosheath and show their close association with magnetic discontinuities. The anti-sunward jets are possibly generated by a shock-discontinuity interaction. Finally, through a comparative analysis of jets observed at Earth, Mars, and Jupiter, we show that the size of jets scales with the size of bow shock.

Kinetic Generation of Whistler Waves in the Turbulent Magnetosheath.

Project description:The Earth's magnetosheath (MSH) is governed by numerous physical processes which shape the particle velocity distributions and contribute to the heating of the plasma. Among them are whistler waves which can interact with electrons. We investigate whistler waves detected in the quasi-parallel MSH by NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale mission. We find that the whistler waves occur even in regions that are predicted stable to wave growth by electron temperature anisotropy. Whistlers are observed in ion-scale magnetic minima and are associated with electrons having butterfly-shaped pitch-angle distributions. We investigate in detail one example and, with the support of modeling by the linear numerical dispersion solver Waves in Homogeneous, Anisotropic, Multicomponent Plasmas, we demonstrate that the butterfly distribution is unstable to the observed whistler waves. We conclude that the observed waves are generated locally. The result emphasizes the importance of considering complete 3D particle distribution functions, and not only the temperature anisotropy, when studying plasma wave instabilities.

Observation and modelling of solar jets.

Project description:The solar atmosphere is full of complicated transients manifesting the reconfiguration of the solar magnetic field and plasma. Solar jets represent collimated, beam-like plasma ejections; they are ubiquitous in the solar atmosphere and important for our understanding of solar activities at different scales, the magnetic reconnection process, particle acceleration, coronal heating, solar wind acceleration, as well as other related phenomena. Recent high-spatio-temporal-resolution, wide-temperature coverage and spectroscopic and stereoscopic observations taken by ground-based and space-borne solar telescopes have revealed many valuable new clues to restrict the development of theoretical models. This review aims at providing the reader with the main observational characteristics of solar jets, physical interpretations and models, as well as unsolved outstanding questions in future studies.

Thunderstorm charge structures producing gigantic jets.

Project description:Gigantic jets are atmospheric electrical discharges that propagate from the top of thunderclouds to the lower ionosphere. They begin as lightning leaders inside the thundercloud, and the thundercloud charge structure primarily determines if the leader is able to escape upward and form a gigantic jet. No observationally verified studies have been reported on the thundercloud charge structures of the parent storms of gigantic jets. Here we present meteorological observations and lightning simulation results to identify a probable thundercloud charge structure of those storms. The charge structure features a narrow upper charge region that forms near the end of an intense convective pulse. The convective pulse produces strong storm top divergence and turbulence, as indicated by large values of storm top radial velocity differentials and spectrum width. The simulations show the charge structure produces leader trees closely matching observations. This charge structure may occur at brief intervals during a thunderstorm's evolution due to the brief nature of convective pulses, which may explain the rarity of gigantic jets compared to other forms of atmospheric electrical discharges.

Electron scale coherent structure as micro accelerator in the Earth's magnetosheath.

Project description:Turbulent energy dissipation is a fundamental process in plasma physics that has not been settled. It is generally believed that the turbulent energy is dissipated at electron scales leading to electron energization in magnetized plasmas. Here, we propose a micro accelerator which could transform electrons from isotropic distribution to trapped, and then to stream (Strahl) distribution. From the MMS observations of an electron-scale coherent structure in the dayside magnetosheath, we identify an electron flux enhancement region in this structure collocated with an increase of magnetic field strength, which is also closely associated with a non-zero parallel electric field. We propose a trapping model considering a field-aligned electric potential together with the mirror force. The results are consistent with the observed electron fluxes from ~50 eV to ~200 eV. It further demonstrates that bidirectional electron jets can be formed by the hourglass-like magnetic configuration of the structure.

Direct observation of ion cyclotron damping of turbulence in Earth's magnetosheath plasma.

Project description:Plasma turbulence plays a key role in space and astrophysical plasma systems, enabling the energy of magnetic fields and plasma flows to be transported to particle kinetic scales at which the turbulence dissipates and heats the plasma. Identifying the physical mechanisms responsible for the dissipation of the turbulent energy is a critical step in developing the predictive capability for the turbulent heating needed by global models. In this work, spacecraft measurements of the electromagnetic fields and ion velocity distributions by the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission are used to generate velocity-space signatures that identify ion cyclotron damping in Earth's turbulent magnetosheath, in agreement with analytical modeling. Furthermore, the rate of ion energization is directly quantified and combined with a previous analysis of the electron energization to identify the dominant channels of turbulent dissipation and determine the partitioning of energy among species in this interval.

Hierarchical TiO2 Layers Prepared by Plasma Jets.

Project description:Heterogeneous photocatalysis of TiO2 is one of the most efficient advanced oxidation processes for water and air purification. Here, we prepared hierarchical TiO2 layers (Spikelets) by hollow-cathode discharge sputtering and tested their photocatalytic performance in the abatement of inorganic (NO, NO2) and organic (4-chlorophenol) pollutant dispersed in air and water, respectively. The structural-textural properties of the photocatalysts were determined via variety of physico-chemical techniques (XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, FE-SEM. DF-TEM, EDAX and DC measurements). The photocatalysis was carried out under conditions similar to real environment conditions. Although the abatement of NO and NO2 was comparable with that of industrial benchmark Aeroxide® TiO2 P25, the formation of harmful nitrous acid (HONO) product on the Spikelet TiO2 layers was suppressed. Similarly, in the decontamination of water by organics, the mineralization of 4-chlorophenol on Spikelet layers was interestingly the same, although their reaction rate constant was three-times lower. The possible explanation may be the more than half-magnitude order higher external quantum efficacy (EQE) compared to that of the reference TiO2 P25 layer. Therefore, such favorable kinetics and reaction selectivity, together with feasible scale-up, make the hierarchical TiO2 layers very promising photocatalyst which can be used for environmental remediation.
