Project description:One strategy for mitigating the indoor transmission of airborne pathogens, including the SARS-CoV-2 virus, is irradiation by germicidal UV light (GUV). A particularly promising approach is 222 nm light from KrCl excimer lamps (GUV222); this inactivates airborne pathogens and is thought to be relatively safe for human skin and eye exposure. However, the impact of GUV222 on the composition of indoor air has received little experimental study. Here, we conduct laboratory experiments in a 150 L Teflon chamber to examine the formation of secondary species by GUV222. We show that GUV222 generates ozone (O3) and hydroxyl radicals (OH), both of which can react with volatile organic compounds to form oxidized volatile organic compounds and secondary organic aerosol particles. Results are consistent with a box model based on the known photochemistry. We use this model to simulate GUV222 irradiation under more realistic indoor air scenarios and demonstrate that under some conditions, GUV222 irradiation can lead to levels of O3, OH, and secondary organic products that are substantially elevated relative to normal indoor conditions. The results suggest that GUV222 should be used at low intensities and in concert with ventilation, decreasing levels of airborne pathogens while mitigating the formation of air pollutants.

Project description:Ambulances are frequently contaminated with infectious microorganisms shed by patients during transport that can be transferred to subsequent patients and emergency medical service workers. Manual decontamination is tedious and time-consuming, and persistent contamination is common even after cleaning. Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) has been proposed as a terminal disinfection method for ambulance patient compartments. However, no published studies have tested the use of UVGI in ambulances. The objectives of this study were to investigate the efficacy of a UVGI system in an ambulance patient compartment and to examine the impact of UVGI fixture position and the UV reflectivity of interior surfaces on the time required for disinfection. A UVGI fixture was placed in the front, middle, or back of an ambulance patient compartment, and the UV irradiance was measured at 49 locations. Aluminum sheets and UV-reflective paint were added to examine the effects of increasing surface reflectivity on disinfection time. Disinfection tests were conducted using Bacillus subtilis spores as a surrogate for pathogens. Our results showed that the UV irradiance varied considerably depending upon the surface location. For example, with the UVGI fixture in the back position and without the addition of UV-reflective surfaces, the most irradiated location received a dose of UVGI sufficient for disinfection in 16 s, but the least irradiated location required 15 hr. Because the overall time required to disinfect all of the interior surfaces is determined by the time required to disinfect the surfaces receiving the lowest irradiation levels, the patient compartment disinfection times for different UVGI configurations ranged from 16.5 hr to 59 min depending upon the UVGI fixture position and the interior surface reflectivity. These results indicate that UVGI systems can reduce microbial surface contamination in ambulance compartments, but the systems must be rigorously validated before deployment. Optimizing the UVGI fixture position and increasing the UV reflectivity of the interior surfaces can substantially improve the performance of a UVGI system and reduce the time required for disinfection.

Project description:Germicidal ultraviolet lamps with a peak emission at 222 nm (GUV222) are gaining prominence as a safe and effective solution to reduce disease transmission in occupied indoor environments. While previous studies have reported O3 production from GUV222, less is known about their impact on other indoor constituents affecting indoor air quality, especially in real occupied environments. In this study, the effects of GUV222 on the levels of ozone (O3), ultrafine particles (UFPs), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were investigated across multiple offices with varying occupancies. O3 from the GUV222 operation was observed to increase linearly (∼300 μg h-1 m-1) with a UV light path length from 0 to 3 m beyond which it stabilized. When applied in offices, the O3 production models based on continuous measurements revealed O3 production rates of 1040 ± 87 μg h-1. The resulting increases in steady-state concentrations of 5-21 μg m-3 were highly dependent on the number of office occupants. UFP production occurred during both unoccupied and occupied conditions but predominantly in newly renovated offices. Time-resolved measurements with a proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PTR-TOF-MS) revealed clear alterations in office VOC concentrations. Unsurprisingly, O3 oxidation chemistry was observed, including monoterpene deprivation and 4-oxopentanal (4-OPA) production. But additionally, significant alterations from unidentified mechanisms occurred, causing increased levels of various PTR-TOF-MS signals including C2H5O2+ and C4H9+ hypothesized to arise from photoinduced formation or off-gassing during the GUV222 lamp operation.

Project description:The rapid increase in global cases of COVID-19 illness and death requires the implementation of appropriate and efficient engineering controls to improve indoor air quality. This paper focuses on the use of the ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) air purification technology in HVAC ducts, which is particularly applicable to buildings where fully shutting down air recirculation is not feasible. Given the poor understanding of the in-duct UVGI system regarding its working mechanisms, designs, and applications, this review has the following key research objectives:•Identifying the critical parameters for designing a UVGI system, including the characterization of lamp output, behavior of the target microbial UV dose-response, and evaluation of the inactivation performance and energy consumption.•Elucidating the effects of environmental factors (air velocity, air temperature, and humidity) on the UVGI system design parameters and optimization of the in-duct UVGI design.•Summarizing existing UVGI system designs in the literature and illustrating their germicidal and energy performance in light of COVID-19 mitigation.

Project description:Devices using 222 nm germicidal ultraviolet light (GUV222) have been marketed to reduce virus transmission indoors with low risk of occupant harm from direct UV exposure. GUV222 generates ozone, an indoor air pollutant and oxidant, under constrained laboratory conditions, but the chemistry byproducts of GUV222-generated ozone in real indoor spaces is uncharacterized. We deployed GUV222 in a public restroom, with an air change rate of 1 h-1 one weekend and 2 h-1 the next, to measure ozone formation and byproducts generated from ozone chemistry indoors. Ozone from GUV222 increased background concentrations by 5 ppb on average for both weekends and reacted rapidly (e.g., at rates of 3.7 h-1 for the first weekend and 2.0 h-1 for the second) with gas-phase precursors emitted by urinal screens and on surfaces. These ozone reactions generated volatile organic compound and aerosol byproducts (e.g., up to 2.6 μg m-3 of aerosol mass). We find that GUV222 is enhancing indoor chemistry by at least a factor of two for this restroom. The extent of this enhanced chemistry will likely be different for different indoor spaces and is dependent upon ventilation rates, species and concentrations of precursor VOCs, and surface reactivity. Informed by our measurements of ozone reactivity and background aerosol concentrations, we present a framework for predicting aerosol byproduct formation from GUV222 that can be extended to other indoor spaces. Further research is needed to understand how typical uses of GUV222 could impact air quality in chemically diverse indoor spaces and generate indoor air chemistry byproducts that can affect human health.

Project description:Many New Zealand residential dwellings suffer from dampness and fungi during the winter, which can cause respiratory health problems. This can be due to poor insulation and ventilation, and the situation worsens when residents cannot afford to heat the dwelling. The main aim of this paper is to modify an existing dehumidifier so that it can remove moisture, heat the living space and reduce fungi growth and bacteria. To achieve that, we installed ultraviolet germicidal lights (UVGI) in an existing dehumidifier with a total cost of USD $150.7 (NZD $213.76). The UVGI lights are known to be efficient in destroying the DNA of fungi and bacteria. The results show that the device reduced the fungi growth and did increase the room temperature because the dehumidifier captured two litres of water over 24 h of testing. The proposed device did achieve a reduction in particulate matters, from 0.9 μg/m3 to 0.14 μg/m3 and an acceptable range of relative humidity below 50%, which reduces the favourable conditions for fungi growth. Therefore, our proposed low-cost device does improve the indoor air quality (IAQ) in the living space.

Project description:Since the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been persistent emphasis on the importance of indoor air disinfection and ventilation in isolation units in the hospital environment. Nevertheless, no optimal and concrete disinfection protocol has been proposed to inactivate the viruses as quickly as possible. In this study, we experimentally evaluated various ventilation and disinfection protocols based on the combination of negative-pressure ventilation, ultraviolet (UV) light illumination, and Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) spray against three active virus species in a 3.5 cubic meters isolation unit. This small-size unit has gained attention during the pandemic due to the high demand for compact mobile laboratory systems capable of rapid disease diagnosis. In accordance with the WHO laboratory biosafety guidance, which states that all enclosed units where diagnostic work is conducted must ensure proper ventilation and disinfection activities, we aim to propose virus removal protocols for units compact enough to be installed within a van or deployed outdoor. The results confirmed the superiority (in terms of virus removal rate and time required) of the virus removal methods in the order of UV light, ventilation, and HOCl spray. Ultimately, we propose two optimal protocols: (i) UV light alone for three minutes, and (ii) UV light with ventilation for three minutes, followed by one-minute ventilation only. The time span of three minutes in the latter protocol is based on the clinical practice such that the medical staffs have a sufficient time to process the samples taken in transition to next patient to care.

Project description:Interrupting the transmission of airborne (<≈5 µm) respiratory pathogens indoors is not a new challenge, but it has attracted unprecedented interest due to the COVID-19 pandemic during 2020-2021. However, bacterial respiratory pathogens with known or potential airborne transmission account for an appreciable proportion of the communicable disease burden globally. We aimed to systematically review quantitative, laboratory-based studies of air disinfection techniques for airborne respiratory bacteria. Three databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus) were searched, following PRISMA guidelines. A total of 9596 articles were identified, of which 517 were assessed in detail and of which 26 met the inclusion and quality assessment criteria. Seven air disinfection techniques, including UV-C light, filtration, and face masks, among others, were applied to 13 different bacterial pathogens. More than 80% of studies suggested that air disinfection techniques were more effective at inactivating or killing bacteria than the comparator or baseline condition. However, it was not possible to compare these techniques because of methodological heterogeneity and the relatively small number of the studies. Laboratory studies are useful for demonstrating proof-of-concept and performance under controlled conditions. However, the generalisability of their findings to person-to-person transmission in real-world settings is unclear for most of the pathogens and techniques we assessed.

Project description:Ultraviolet C (UVC), or ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI), is known for its effective air, water, and surface disinfectant properties. With the rise of global awareness about public sanitation and personal hygiene due to the emergence of the current coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, several applications of UVC were introduced to the commercial market. The present experimental study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of commercial household UVC germicidal devices for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) inactivation. Ten UVC devices were included in the study comprising of 7 low-pressure mercury lamps (LPMLs) and 3 UVC- light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Considering applications, 3 were handheld UVGI surface disinfection equipment, 4 were UVGI disinfection chambers, and 3 were movable UVGI air and surface purifiers. To determine SARS-CoV-2 inactivation performance, UVC irradiance (mW/cm2) was measured 3 times repeatedly at distance and duration corresponding to manufacturers' usage instructions. The required UVC dosage could not be achieved by either of UVC-LED devices (1 handheld UVGI surface disinfection equipment and 2 UVGI disinfection chambers). Five of seven LPMLs can sufficiently emit UVC irradiance for SARS-CoV-2-inactivation. A lack of standardization in the distance and cycle duration for each UVC application was observed. Standard usage guidelines for UVC devices are required to improve the effectiveness of UVC irradiance for SARS-CoV-2 inactivation as well as to minimize the potential side effects of UVC.
