Thioetherification via Photoredox/Nickel Dual Catalysis.

Project description:Hypervalent alkylsilicates represent new and readily accessible precursors for the generation of alkyl radicals under photoredox conditions. Alkyl radicals generated from such silicates serve as effective hydrogen atom abstractors from thiols, furnishing thiyl radicals. The reactive sulfur species generated in this manner can be funneled into a nickel-mediated cross-coupling cycle employing aromatic bromides to furnish thioethers. The serendipitous discovery of this reaction and its utilization for the thioetherification of various aryl and heteroaryl bromides with a diverse array of thiols is described. The S-H selective H atom abstraction event enables a wide range of functional groups, including those bearing protic moieties, to be tolerated.

A π-Conjugated, Covalent Phosphinine Framework.

Project description:Structural modularity of polymer frameworks is a key advantage of covalent organic polymers, however, only C, N, O, Si, and S have found their way into their building blocks so far. Here, the toolbox available to polymer and materials chemists is expanded by one additional nonmetal, phosphorus. Starting with a building block that contains a λ5 -phosphinine (C5 P) moiety, a number of polymerization protocols are evaluated, finally obtaining a π-conjugated, covalent phosphinine-based framework (CPF-1) through Suzuki-Miyaura coupling. CPF-1 is a weakly porous polymer glass (72.4 m2 g-1 BET at 77 K) with green fluorescence (λmax =546 nm) and extremely high thermal stability. The polymer catalyzes hydrogen evolution from water under UV and visible light irradiation without the need for additional co-catalyst at a rate of 33.3 μmol h-1 g-1 . These results demonstrate for the first time the incorporation of the phosphinine motif into a complex polymer framework. Phosphinine-based frameworks show promising electronic and optical properties, which might spark future interest in their applications in light-emitting devices and heterogeneous catalysis.

Photoredox Heterobimetallic Dual Catalysis Using Engineered Covalent Organic Frameworks.

Project description:The functionalization of an imine-based layered covalent organic framework (COF), containing phenanthroline units as ligands, has allowed the obtention of a heterobimetallated material. Photoactive Ir and Ni fragments were immobilized within the porous structure of the COF, enabling heterogeneous light-mediated Csp3-Csp2 cross-couplings. As radical precursors, potassium benzyl- and alkoxy-trifluoroborates, organic silicates, and proline derivatives were employed, which brings out the good versatility of Ir,Ni@Phen-COF. Moreover, in all the studied cases, an enhanced activity and stability have been observed in comparison with analogous homogenous systems.

Highly Regioselective Indoline Synthesis under Nickel/Photoredox Dual Catalysis.

Project description:Nickel/photoredox catalysis is used to synthesize indolines in one step from iodoacetanilides and alkenes. Very high regioselectivity for 3-substituted indoline products is obtained for both aliphatic and styrenyl olefins. Mechanistic investigations indicate that oxidation to Ni(III) is necessary to perform the difficult C-N bond-forming reductive elimination, producing a Ni(I) complex, which in turn is reduced to Ni(0). This process serves to further demonstrate the utility of photoredox catalysts as controlled single electron transfer agents in multioxidation state nickel catalysis.

Photoredox Catalysis Enables Access to N-Functionalized 2,1-Borazaronaphthalenes.

Project description:The synthesis and utilization of a class of 2,1-borazaronaphthyltrifluoroborate reagents that provide a general solution to the challenge of N-functionalization of the 2,1-borazaronaphthalene core is described. By adorning the nitrogen of this core with a trifluoroboratomethyl unit, a suite of odd-electron processes can be executed, installing motifs that would otherwise be inaccessible using a two-electron approach. In addition, this process enables rapid annulation, furnishing a heretofore unknown polycyclic B-N species.

Three-Component Olefin Dicarbofunctionalization Enabled by Nickel/Photoredox Dual Catalysis.

Project description:An intermolecular, photocatalytic dicarbofunctionalization (DCF) of olefins enabled by the merger of Giese-type addition with Ni/photoredox dual catalysis has been realized. Capitalizing on the rapid addition of 3° radicals to alkenes and their reluctance toward single electron metalation to Ni complexes, regioselective alkylation and arylation of olefins is possible. This dual catalytic method not only permits elaborate species to be assembled from commodity materials, but also allows quaternary and tertiary centers to be installed in a singular, chemoselective olefin difunctionalization. This multicomponent process occurs under exceptionally mild conditions, compatible with a diverse range of functional groups and synthetic handles such as pinacolboronate esters. This technology was directly applied to the synthesis of an intermediate to a preclinical candidate (TK-666) and its derivatives.

Cascade Cross-Coupling of Dienes: Photoredox and Nickel Dual Catalysis.

Project description:Chemical transformations based on cascade reactions have the potential to simplify the preparation of diverse and architecturally complex molecules dramatically. Herein, we disclose an unprecedented and efficient method for the cross-coupling of radical precursors, dienes, and electrophilic coupling partners via a photoredox- and nickel-enabled cascade cross-coupling process. The cascade reaction furnishes a diverse array of saturated carbo- and heterocyclic scaffolds, thus providing access to a quick gain in C-C bond saturation.

Transition metal photoredox catalysis of radical thiol-ene reactions.

Project description:We describe the anti-Markovnikov hydrothiolation of olefins using visible-light-absorbing transition metal photocatalysts. The key thiyl radical intermediates are generated upon quenching of photoexcited Ru*(bpz)3(2) with a variety of thiols. The adducts of a wide variety of olefins and thiols are formed in excellent yield (73-99%).
