Project description:An eco-friendly and sustainable salt-templating approach was proposed for the production of anode materials with a 3D sponge-like structure for sodium-ion capacitors using gluconic acid as carbon precursor and sodium carbonate as water-removable template. The optimized carbon material combined porous thin walls that provided short diffusional paths, a highly disordered microstructure with dilated interlayer spacing, and a large oxygen content, all of which facilitated Na ion transport and provided plenty of active sites for Na adsorption. This material provided a capacity of 314 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 and 130 mAh g-1 at 10 A g-1 . When combined with a 3D highly porous carbon cathode (SBET ≈2300 m2 g-1 ) synthesized from the same precursor, the Na-ion capacitor showed high specific energy/power, that is 110 Wh kg-1 at low power and still 71 Wh kg-1 at approximately 26 kW kg-1 , and a good capacity retention of 70 % over 10000 cycles.

Project description:Lithium-ion capacitors (LICs) are emerging as one of the most advanced hybrid energy storage devices, however, their development is limited by the imbalance of the dynamics and capacity between the anode and cathode electrodes. Herein, anthracite was proposed as the raw material to prepare coal-based, nitrogen-doped porous carbon materials (CNPCs), together with being employed as a cathode and anode used for dual-carbon lithium-ion capacitors (DC-LICs). The prepared CNPCs exhibited a folded carbon nanosheet structure and the pores could be well regulated by changing the additional amount of g-C3N4, showing a high conductivity, abundant heteroatoms, and a large specific surface area. As expected, the optimized CNPCs (CTK-1.0) delivered a superior lithium storage capacity, which exhibited a high specific capacity of 750 mAh g-1 and maintained an excellent capacity retention rate of 97% after 800 cycles. Furthermore, DC-LICs (CTK-1.0//CTK-1.0) were assembled using the CTK-1.0 as both cathode and anode electrodes to match well in terms of internal kinetics and capacity simultaneously, which displayed a maximum energy density of 137.6 Wh kg-1 and a protracted lifetime of 3000 cycles. This work demonstrates the great potential of coal-based carbon materials for electrochemical energy storage devices and also provides a new way for the high value-added utilization of coal materials.

Project description:Lithium-ion hybrid capacitors (LICs) are regarded as one of the most promising next generation energy storage devices. Commercial activated carbon materials with low cost and excellent cycling stability are widely used as cathode materials for LICs, however, their low energy density remains a significant challenge for the practical applications of LICs. Herein, Na0.76V6O15 nanobelts (NaVO) were prepared and combined with commercial activated carbon YP50D to form hybrid cathode materials. Credit to the synergism of its capacitive effect and diffusion-controlled faradaic effect, NaVO/C hybrid cathode displays both superior cyclability and enhanced capacity. LICs were assembled with the as-prepared NaVO/C hybrid cathode and artificial graphite anode which was pre-lithiated. Furthermore, 10-NaVO/C//AG LIC delivers a high energy density of 118.9 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 220.6 W kg-1 and retains 43.7 Wh kg-1 even at a high power density of 21,793.0 W kg-1. The LIC can also maintain long-term cycling stability with capacitance retention of approximately 70% after 5000 cycles at 1 A g-1. Accordingly, hybrid cathodes composed of commercial activated carbon and a small amount of high energy battery-type materials are expected to be a candidate for low-cost advanced LICs with both high energy density and power density.

Project description:Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) Fe3O4@C composite with hollow porous structure is prepared by simple solution method and calcination treatment with biomass waste rape pollen (RP) as a carbon source, which is served as an anode of Li-ion capacitor (LIC). The 3D interconnected porous structure and conductive networks facilitate the transfer of ion/electron and accommodate the volume changes of Fe3O4 during the electrochemical reaction process, which leads to the excellent performance of the Fe3O4@C composite electrode. The electrochemical analysis demonstrates that the hybrid LIC fabricated with Fe3O4@C as the anode and activated carbon (AC) as the cathode can operate at a voltage of 4.0 V and exhibit a high energy density of 140.6 Wh kg-1 at 200 W kg-1 (52.8 Wh kg-1 at 10 kW kg-1), along with excellent cycling stability, with a capacity retention of 83.3% over 6000 cycles. Hence, these encouraging results indicate that Fe3O4@C has great potential in developing advanced LICs electrode materials for the next generation of energy storage systems.

Project description:Lithium-ion capacitors (LICs) combine the advantages of both batteries and supercapacitors; they have attracted intensive attention among energy conversion and storage fields, and one of the key points of their research is the exploration of suitable battery-type electrode materials. Herein, a simple and low-cost strategy is proposed, in which SnO2 particles are anchored on the conductive porous carbon nano-sheets (PCN) derived from coffee grounds. This method can inhibit the grain coarsening of Sn and the volume change of SnO2 effectively, thus improving the electrochemical reversibility of the materials. In the lithium half cell (0-3.0 V vs. Li/Li+), the as-prepared SnO2/PCN electrode yields a reversible capacity of 799 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 and decent long-term cyclability of 313 mA h g-1 at 1 A g-1 after 500 cycles. The excellent Li+ storage performance of SnO2/PCN is beneficial from the hierarchical structure as well as the robust carbonaceous buffer layer. Besides, a LIC hybrid device with the as-prepared SnO2/PCN anode exhibits outstanding energy and power density of 138 W h kg-1 and 53 kW kg-1 at a voltage window of 1.0-4.0 V. These promising results open up a new way to develop advanced anode materials with high rate and long life.

Project description:Constructing flexible hybrid supercapacitors is a feasible way to achieve devices with high energy density, high power density and flexibility at the same time. Herein, flexible asymmetric hybrid supercapacitors are fabricated with blow spun activated carbon fibers. Owing to the highly effective conductive network, abundant nitrogen doping, optimized pore-structure and surface chemical properties of the carbon fibers, the as-prepared flexible hybrid supercapacitor shows outstanding energy and power performance (98 W h kg-1 (0.3 mW h cm-2) @ 400 W kg-1, 9 W h kg-1 @ 34 kW kg-1), as well as excellent cycle stability with 93% capacitance retention after 4000 cycles.

Project description:Na-ion batteries (NIBs) have attracted considerable attention in recent years owing to the high abundance and low cost of Na. It is well known that S doping can improve the electrochemical performance of carbon materials for NIBs. However, the current methods for S doping in carbons normally involve toxic precursors or rigorous conditions. In this work, we report a creative and facile strategy for preparing S-doped porous carbons (SCs) via the pyrolysis of conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs). Briefly, thiophene-based CMPs served as the precursors and doping sources simultaneously. Simple direct carbonization of CMPs produced S-doped carbon materials with highly porous structures. When used as an anode for NIBs, the SCs exhibited a high reversible capacity of 440 mAh g-1 at 50 mA g-1 after 100 cycles, superior rate capability, and excellent cycling stability (297 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles at 500 mA g-1), outperforming most S-doped carbon materials reported thus far. The excellent performance of the SCs is attributed to the expanded lattice distance after S doping. Furthermore, we employed ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to investigate the electrochemical reaction mechanism of the SCs during sodiation-desodiation, which can highlight the role of doped S for Na-ion storage.

Project description:Lithium-ion capacitors (LICs) have attracted intense attention due to their high energy/power densities and good stability. However, their performance is severely limited by the imbalance in reaction kinetics and electrochemical capacity between the faradaic battery-like anodes and non-faradic capacitive cathodes. Here, we propose an all alginate-derived LIC assembled with a three-dimensional porous orthorhombic phase Nb2O5/C hybrid as the anode, seaweed-derived carbon as the cathode and sodium alginate (SA) as the electrode binder. The increase in the rate performance of the anode and the capacity of the cathode efficiently mitigates the mismatch between the counter electrodes, and the SA binder provides facilitated access for Li ions to the surfaces of electrode materials. The all alginate-derived LIC exhibits high energy (143.9 W h kg-1 at 87.6 W kg-1) and power (17.5 kW kg-1 at 75.1 W h kg-1) densities with a superior cyclability (84.6% capacity retention after 3000 charge-discharge cycles), surpassing those of previous Nb2O5-based LICs. This work provides a novel design strategy for the electrodes of next-generation high-performance LICs.

Project description:To circumvent the imbalances of electrochemical kinetics and charge-storage capacity between Li+ ion battery anodes and capacitive cathodes in lithium-ion capacitors (LICs), dual carbon based LICs are constructed and investigated extensively. Herein, S, O dual-doped 3D net-like porous carbon (S-NPC) is prepared using waste paper as the carbon source through a facile solvothermal treatment and chemical activation. Benefiting from the combination effect of the rich S,O-doping (about 2.1 at% for S, and 9.0 at% for O), high surface area (2262 m2 g-1) and interconnected porous network structure, the S-NPC-40 material exhibits excellent electrochemical performance as both cathode material and anode material for LICs. S, O doping not only increases the pseudocapacity but also improves the electronic conductivity, which is beneficial to reduce the mismatch between the two electrodes. The S-NPC-40//S-NPC-40 LIC delivers high energy densities of 176.1 and 77.8 W h kg-1 at power densities of 400 and 20 kW kg-1, respectively, as well as superior cycling stability with 82% capacitance retention after 20 000 cycles at 2 A g-1. This research provides an efficient method to convert waste paper to porous carbon electrode materials for high performance LIC devices.

Project description:Heteroatom doping is considered to be an efficient strategy to improve the electrochemical performance of carbon-based anode materials for Na-ion batteries (SIBs), due to the introduction of an unbalanced electron atmosphere and increased electrochemical reactive sites of carbon. However, developing green and low-cost approaches to synthesize heteroatom dual-doped carbon with an appropriate porous structure, is still challenging. Here, N/S-co-doped porous carbon sheets, with a main pore size, in the range 1.8-10 nm, has been fabricated through a simple thermal treatment method, using KOH-treated waste bagasse, as a carbon source, and thiourea, as the N and S precursor. The N/S-co-doped carbon sheet electrodes possess significant defects, high specific surface area, enhanced electronic conductivity, improved sodium storage capacity, and long-term cyclability, thereby delivering a high capacity of 223 mA h g-1 at 0.2 A g-1 after 500 cycles and retaining 155 mA h g-1 at 1 A g-1 for 2000 cycles. This work provides a low-cost route to fabricate high-performance dual-doped porous carbonaceous anode materials for SIBs.
