The genome sequence of the White-shouldered Marble, Apotomis turbidana (Hubner, 1825).

ABSTRACT: We present a genome assembly from an individual male Apotomis turbidana (the White-shouldered Marble; Arthropoda; Insecta; Lepidoptera; Tortricidae). The genome sequence is 720.5 megabases in span. Most of the assembly is scaffolded into 28 chromosomal pseudomolecules, including the assembled Z sex chromosome. The mitochondrial genome has also been assembled and is 16.8 kilobases in length. Gene annotation of this assembly on Ensembl identified 22,646 protein coding genes.

Complete mitochondrial genome sequence of the northern red-shouldered macaw (Diopsittaca nobilis).

Project description:The northern red-shouldered macaw, Diopsittaca nobilis, is listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora Appendix II. Here, we report for the first time the complete mitochondrial genome of D. nobilis. This new sequence is 16,992 base pairs (bp) in length and includes 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNAs, two ribosomal RNAs, and a single non-coding control region. The overall nucleotide composition of this sequence consists of 30.40% A, 14.00% G, 23.60% T, and 32.00% C. The phylogenetic relationships suggested that the mitogenome of D. nobilis is close to that of three other macaw species. Our results provide useful mitogenomic information to support further studies on the phylogeny and taxonomy of Psittaciformes.

Project description:The Antispila species feeding on Vitaceae from Shandong Peninsula, China are treated. Antispila kunyuensis Liu, sp. n., feeding on Ampelopsis humulifolia, is described as new to science, and A. uenoi Kuroko, 1987, feeding on Vitis amurensis, is recorded as new for China. Vitis amurensis is documented as a new host plant for A. uenoi. The adult male and female, host plant and typical patterns of leaf-mines of both species are illustrated, as are male and female genitalia and venation. The venation and the paired tufts of scales on the 7th abdominal segment in male are illustrated for A. uenoi for the first time. DNA barcodes of both species are also provided, together with a neighbor-joining tree for facilitating species delimitation.

Project description:Conspicuous female signals have recently received substantial scientific attention, but it remains unclear if their evolution is the result of selection acting on females independently of males or if mutual selection facilitates female change. Species that express female, but not male, phenotypic variation among populations represents a useful opportunity to address this knowledge gap. White-shouldered fairywrens (Malurus alboscapulatus) are tropical songbirds with a well-resolved phylogeny where female, but not male, coloration varies allopatrically across subspecies. We explored how four distinct signaling modalities, each putatively associated with increased social selection, are expressed in two populations that vary in competitive pressure on females. Females in a derived subspecies (M. a. moretoni) have evolved more ornamented plumage and have shorter tails (a signal of social dominance) relative to an ancestral subspecies (M. a. lorentzi) with drab females. In response to simulated territorial intrusions broadcasting female song, both sexes of M. a. moretoni are more aggressive and more coordinated with their mates in both movement and vocalizations. Finally, M. a. moretoni songs are more complex than M. a. lorentzi, but song complexity does not vary between sexes in either population. These results suggest that correlated phenotypic shifts in coloration and tail morphology in females as well as song complexity and aggression in both sexes may have occurred in response to changes in the intensity of social selection pressures. This highlights increased competitive pressures in both sexes can facilitate the evolution of complex multimodal signals.

Taxonomic Review of the Genus Caloptilia Hubner, 1825 (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) with Descriptions of Three New Species and Seven Newly Recorded Species from Korea.

Project description:In this study, 29 species of Caloptilia Hübner, 1825, belonging to the family Gracillariidae, were recognized in Korea. Among these, three species, i.e., C. purpureus sp. nov., C. koreana sp. nov., and C. xanthos sp. nov., are described as new to science. In addition, seven species of this genus are reported for the first time in Korea. All known species were enumerated, based on their available information. Adult specimens and genitalia of the new and newly recorded species were examined and described using all available information.
