Reversible and irreversible stimuli-responsive chromism of a square-planar platinum(ii) salt.

ABSTRACT: A new simple Pt(ii) terpyridyl salt that shows reversible response towards acetonitrile and irreversible response towards methanol has been reported, accompanied with the colorimetric/luminescent changing from red to yellow. Experimentally and theoretically, the spectroscopic change derives from the hydrogen bonds between crystal water in the Pt(ii) terpyridyl salt and external organic molecules, and the different strength of hydrogen bond leads either reversible or irreversible stimuli-response. Furthermore, this Pt(ii) terpyridyl salt has been on one hand applied as a probe for sensing acetonitrile in water solution, with high selectivity, good reversibility, proper sensitivity and fast response rate, and on the other hand as advanced anticounterfeiting materials. The current study provides a new approach to acquire and design either reversible or irreversible stimuli-responsive luminescent materials.

Synthesis and Characterization of Dimethylbis(2-pyridyl)borate Nickel(II) Complexes: Unimolecular Square-Planar to Square-Planar Rotation around Nickel(II).

Project description:The syntheses of novel dimethylbis(2-pyridyl)borate nickel(II) complexes 4 and 6 are reported. These complexes were unambiguously characterized by X-ray analysis. In dichloromethane solvent, complex 4 undergoes a unique square-planar to square-planar rotation around the nickel(II) center, for which activation parameters of ΔH⧧ = 12.2(1) kcal mol-1 and ΔS⧧ = 0.8(5) eu were measured via NMR inversion recovery experiments. Complex 4 was also observed to isomerize via a relatively slow ring flip: ΔH⧧ = 15.0(2) kcal mol-1; and ΔS⧧ = -4.2(7) eu. DFT studies support the experimentally measured rotation activation energy (cf. calculated ΔH⧧ = 11.1 kcal mol-1) as well as the presence of a high-energy triplet intermediate (ΔH = 8.8 kcal mol-1).

Enhancement of Chiroptical Responses of trans-Bis[(β-iminomethyl)naphthoxy]platinum(II) Complexes with Distorted Square Planar Coordination Geometry.

Project description:The relationship between the coordination geometry and photophysical properties of trans-bis[(β-iminomethyl)naphthoxy]platinum(II) was investigated both experimentally and theoretically. A series of platinum(II) complexes with differently substituted iminomethyl groups were synthesized, and their photophysical properties were examined in solution, in the crystalline, and in the PMMA film-dispersed state, respectively (PMMA=poly(methyl methacrylate)). These complexes showed structure-dependent emission spectra, in which the color of the luminescence in the crystalline state varied over a range of about 40 nm depending on the specific bowl-shaped molecular structure. The chiral complexes with (R,R)- and (S,S)-configurations were found to have structure-dependent chiroptical properties both in solution and the PMMA film-dispersed state such that the intensity of circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) were enhanced with bulky cyclic substituents at the nitrogen atoms. A theoretical study using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TD)-DFT calculations revealed that the enhancement of chiroptical responses is due to the amplification of the magnetic dipole moment caused by the distortion of the square planar geometry.

Unravelling the anticancer potential of a square planar copper complex: toward non-platinum chemotherapy.

Project description:Coordination compounds from simple transition metals are robust substitutes for platinum-based complexes due to their remarkable anticancer properties. In a quest to find new metal complexes that could substitute or augment the platinum based chemotherapy we synthesized three transition metal complexes C1-C3 with Cu(ii), Ni(ii), and Co(ii) as the central metal ions, respectively, and evaluated them for their anticancer activity against the human keratinocyte (HaCaT) cell line and human cervical cancer (HeLa) cell lines. These complexes showed different activity profiles with the square planar copper complex C1 being the most active with IC50 values lower than those of the widely used anticancer drug cisplatin. Assessment of the morphological changes by DAPI staining and ROS generation by DCFH-DA assay exposed that the cell death occurred by caspase-3 mediated apoptosis. C1 displayed interesting interactions with Ct-DNA, evidenced by absorption spectroscopy and validated by docking studies. Together, our results suggest that binding of the ligand to the DNA-binding domain of the p53 tumor suppressor (p53DBD) protein and the induction of the apoptotic hallmark protein, caspase-3, upon treatment with the metal complex could be positively attributed to a higher level of ROS and the subsequent DNA damage (oxidation), generated by the complex C1, that could well explain the interesting anticancer activity observed for this complex.

The Reversible Electron Transfer Within Stimuli-Responsive Hydrochromic Supramolecular Material Containing Pyridinium Oxime and Hexacyanoferrate (II) Ions.

Project description:The structural and electronic features of the stimuli-responsive supramolecular inter-ionic charge-transfer material containing electron accepting N-benzylyridinium-4-oxime cation (BPA4+) and electron donating hexacyanoferrate (II) are reported. The study of reversible stimuli-induced transformation between hydrated reddish-brown (BPA4)4[Fe(CN)6]·10H2O and anhydrous blue (BPA4)4[Fe(CN)6] revealed the origin of observed hydrochromic behavior. The comparison of the crystal structures of decahydrate and anhydrous phase showed that subsequent exclusion/inclusion of lattice water molecules induces structural relocation of one BPA4+ that alter the donor-to-acceptor charge-transfer states, resulting in chromotropism seen as reversible reddish-brown to blue color changes. The decreased donor-acceptor distance in (BPA4)4[Fe(CN)6] enhanced charge-transfer interaction allowing charge separation via one-electron transfer, as evidenced by in-situ ESR and FTIR spectroscopies. The reversibility of hydrochromic behavior was demonstrated by in-situ HT-XRPD, hot-stage microscopic and in situ diffuse-reflectance spectroscopic analyses. The insight into electronic structural features was obtained with density functional theory calculations, employed to elucidate electronic structure for both compounds. The electrical properties of the phases during dehydration process were investigated by temperature-dependent impedance spectroscopy.

Dual stimuli-responsive rotaxane-branched dendrimers with reversible dimension modulation.

Project description:With the aim of mimicking biological machines, in which the delicate arrangement of nanomechanical units lead to the output of specific functions upon the external stimulus, the construction of dual stimuli-responsive rotaxane-branched dendrimers was realized in this study. Starting from a switchable organometallic [2]rotaxane precursor, the employment of a controllable divergent approach allowed for the successful synthesis of a family of rotaxane-branched dendrimers up to the third generation with 21 switchable rotaxane moieties located on each branch. More importantly, upon the addition and removal of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) molecule or acetate anion as the external stimulus, the amplified responsiveness of the switchable rotaxane units endowed the resultant rotaxane-branched dendrimers the solvent- or anion-controlled molecular motions, thus leading to the dimension modulation. Therefore, we successfully constructed a family of rotaxane-branched dendrimers with dual stimuli-responsiveness that will be a privileged platform for the construction of dynamic supramolecular materials.

3D Printed Reversible Shape Changing Components with Stimuli Responsive Materials.

Project description:The creation of reversibly-actuating components that alter their shapes in a controllable manner in response to environmental stimuli is a grand challenge in active materials, structures, and robotics. Here we demonstrate a new reversible shape-changing component design concept enabled by 3D printing two stimuli responsive polymers-shape memory polymers and hydrogels-in prescribed 3D architectures. This approach uses the swelling of a hydrogel as the driving force for the shape change, and the temperature-dependent modulus of a shape memory polymer to regulate the time of such shape change. Controlling the temperature and aqueous environment allows switching between two stable configurations - the structures are relatively stiff and can carry load in each - without any mechanical loading and unloading. Specific shape changing scenarios, e.g., based on bending, or twisting in prescribed directions, are enabled via the controlled interplay between the active materials and the 3D printed architectures. The physical phenomena are complex and nonintuitive, and so to help understand the interplay of geometric, material, and environmental stimuli parameters we develop 3D nonlinear finite element models. Finally, we create several 2D and 3D shape changing components that demonstrate the role of key parameters and illustrate the broad application potential of the proposed approach.

Reversible multicolor chromism in layered formamidinium metal halide perovskites.

Project description:Metal halide perovskites feature crystalline-like electronic band structures and liquid-like physical properties. The crystal-liquid duality enables optoelectronic devices with unprecedented performance and a unique opportunity to chemically manipulate the structure with low energy input. In this work, we leverage the low formation energy of metal halide perovskites to demonstrate multicolor reversible chromism. We synthesized layered Ruddlesden-Popper FAn+1PbnX3n+1 (FA = formamidinium, X = I, Br; n = number of layers = 1, 2, 3 … ∞) and reversibly tune the dimensionality (n) by modulating the strength and number of H-bonds in the system. H-bonding was controlled by exposure to solvent vapor (solvatochromism) or temperature change (thermochromism), which shuttles FAX salt pairs between the FAn+1PbnX3n+1 domains and adjacent FAX "reservoir" domains. Unlike traditional chromic materials that only offer a single-color transition, FAn+1PbnX3n+1 films reversibly switch between multiple colors including yellow, orange, red, brown, and white/colorless. Each colored phase exhibits distinct optoelectronic properties characteristic of 2D superlattice materials with tunable quantum well thickness.

Vangl2, a planar cell polarity molecule, is implicated in irreversible and reversible kidney glomerular injury.

Project description:Planar cell polarity (PCP) pathways control the orientation and alignment of epithelial cells within tissues. Van Gogh-like 2 (Vangl2) is a key PCP protein that is required for the normal differentiation of kidney glomeruli and tubules. Vangl2 has also been implicated in modifying the course of acquired glomerular disease, and here, we further explored how Vangl2 impacts on glomerular pathobiology in this context. Targeted genetic deletion of Vangl2 in mouse glomerular epithelial podocytes enhanced the severity of not only irreversible accelerated nephrotoxic nephritis but also lipopolysaccharide-induced reversible glomerular damage. In each proteinuric model, genetic deletion of Vangl2 in podocytes was associated with an increased ratio of active-MMP9 to inactive MMP9, an enzyme involved in tissue remodelling. In addition, by interrogating microarray data from two cohorts of renal patients, we report increased VANGL2 transcript levels in the glomeruli of individuals with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, suggesting that the molecule may also be involved in certain human glomerular diseases. These observations support the conclusion that Vangl2 modulates glomerular injury, at least in part by acting as a brake on MMP9, a potentially harmful endogenous enzyme. © 2018 The Authors. UV-Triggered On-Demand Temperature-Responsive Reversible and Irreversible Gelation of Cellulose Nanocrystals.

Project description:We show ionically cross-linked, temperature-responsive reversible or irreversible hydrogels of anionic cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and methacrylate terpolymers by mixing them homogeneously in the initially charge-neutral state of the polymer, which was subsequently switched to be cationic by cleaving side groups by UV irradiation. The polymer is a random terpolymer poly(di(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate)-rnd-poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate)-rnd-poly(2-((2-nitrobenzyl)oxycarbonyl)aminoethyl methacrylate), that is, PDEGMA-rnd-POEGMA-rnd-PNBOCAEMA. The PDEGMA and POEGMA repeating units lead to a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior. Initially, homogeneous aqueous mixtures are obtained with CNCs, and no gelation is observed even upon heating to 60 °C. However, upon UV irradiation, the NBOCAEMAs are transformed to cationic 2-aminoethyl methacrylate (AEMA) groups, as 2-nitrobenzaldehyde moieties are cleaved. The resulting mixtures of anionic CNC and cationic PDEGMA-rnd-POEGMA-rnd-PAEMA show gelation for sufficiently high polymer fractions upon heating to 60 °C due to the interplay of ionic interactions and LCST. For short heating times, the gelation is thermoreversible, whereas for long enough heating times, irreversible gels can be obtained, indicating importance of kinetic aspects. The ionic nature of the cross-linking is directly shown by adding NaCl, which leads to gel melting. In conclusion, the optical triggering of the polymer ionic interactions in combination with its LCST phase behavior allows a new way for ionic nanocellulose hydrogel assemblies.

Stimuli Responsive Silylene: Electromerism Induced Reversible Switching Between Mono- and Bis-Silylene.

Project description:Electromerism is a very well-known phenomenon in transition metal chemistry. In main group chemistry, this concept has only started getting attention recently. We report stimuli responsive low-valent silicon compounds exhibiting electromerism. A mixed-valent silaiminyl-silylene 1, [LSi-Si(NDipp)L] (L=PhC(Nt Bu)2 ), was synthesized in a single step from amidinate-chlorosilylene. Compound 1 has two interconnected Si atoms in formally +I and +III oxidation states. Upon treatment with Lewis acidic CuI X (X=mesityl, Cl, Br, I), electron redistribution occurs resulting in the formation of [{LSi(NDipp)Si(L)}-CuX], in which both silicon atoms are in the +II formal oxidation state. Removal of the copper center from [{LSi(NDipp)Si(L)}-CuX] by using a Lewis basic carbene led to reformation of the precursor [LSi-Si(NDipp)L]. Thus, the process is fully reversible. This showcases the first example of Lewis acid/base-induced reversible electromerism in silicon chemistry.
