Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) causes life-threatening human infections. Bacteriophage-encoded endolysins degrade the cell walls of Gram-positive bacteria by selectively hydrolyzing the peptidoglycan layer and thus are promising candidates to combat bacterial infections.
