Project description:The transformation of biowaste into products with added value offers a lucrative role in nation-building. The current work describes the synthesis of highly water-soluble, luminous carbon quantum dots (CQDs) in the size range of 5-10 nm from discarded rice straw. The small spherical CQDs that were formed had outstanding optical and luminescent qualities as well as good photostabilities. By performing quantitative multi-assay tests that included antioxidant activities, in vitro stability and colloidal assay investigations as a function of different CQD concentrations, the biocompatibility of CQDs was evaluated. To clearly visualize the type of surface defects and emissive states in produced CQDs, excitation-dependent fluorescence emission experiments have also been carried out. The "waste-to-wealth" strategy that has been devised is a successful step toward the quick and accurate detection of Cu2+ ion in aqueous conditions. The fluorescence-quenching behavior has specified the concentration dependency of the developed sensor in the range of 50 μM to 10 nM, with detection limit value of 0.31 nM. The main advantage of the current research is that it offers a more environmentally friendly, economically viable and scaled-up synthesis of toxicologically screened CQDs for the quick fluorescence detection of Cu2+ ions and opens up new possibilities in wastewater management.

Project description:Di(cyclopentadienecarboxylic acid) dimethyl ester (DCPDME) is a potential dynamic covalent system. When such molecules are used as dynamic crosslinkers in polymers, understanding the reversibility of cyclopentadiene dimerization is crucial to determine optimal melt processing conditions. To this end, we synthesized DCPDME, which consists of three regioisomers with different physicochemical properties, which were investigated by isolating them and further characterizing them using 1H NMR, FTIR and DSC. There have been many attempts to improve the synthesis process to increase the reaction yield and purity of isomer 3, and this goal remains a challenge today. In this work, we show that pure isomers 1 and 2 irreversibly convert to the more stable DCPDME isomer 3 at temperatures between 120 and 140 °C in N2. This shows that isolation of the pure isomer 3 from the DCPDME isomer mixture is not necessary. The DCPDME isomer 3 is reversibly cleaved to the monomeric cyclopentadienecarboxylic acid methyl ester (CPME), as confirmed with GC-MS and the resulting mass spectrum. The conversion of DCPDME isomers 1 and 2 to isomer 3 was confirmed by heating the synthesized mixture of DCPDME isomers at 135 °C for 5 min in N2, producing an almost pure isomer 3 which increased its synthesis yield by 35%.

Project description:A simple condensation of chitosan (from shrimp shells) and 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde was performed to yield bio-lubricant additive comprised of azomethine functional groups to be used with paraffin lube oil in industries. The synthesized Schiff base derivative of chitosan (SBC) additive was characterized using a CHN analyzer and FT-IR spectroscopy, and the thermal stability was explored using thermogravimetry. The rheological properties of SBC additives in paraffin oil were studied and are discussed herein. The tribological properties of SBC were tested in paraffin as the base oil employing a four-ball tester with different experimental conditions (viz. the concentration of the additive, applied load, speed and time duration), following ASTM D4172A standards. The optimum concentration of the additive in the base oil was found to be 150 ppm, exhibiting minimum coefficient of friction, but with higher concentrations of additive in base oils, the coefficient of friction increased. UV-Vis spectroscopy studies were also performed to confirm the formation of SBC and dispersion stability. The determined tribological parameters, such as the coefficient of friction, mean wear scar diameters and mean wear scar volumes, were found to significantly reduce the coefficient of friction of paraffin oil upon the addition of SBC. The state of steel balls upon exposure to various experimental conditions was analyzed and explained based on outcomes from FESEM, EDX, ferrography and AFM spectroscopy. The insights into interactions of the synthesized SBC with the metal surface were explored using ab initio density functional theory, Fukui indices, molecular dynamics simulation and radial distribution function.

Project description:Vegetable oils, whose hydrocarbon structure is very similar to that of petroleum products, are ideal renewable and sustainable alternatives to petroleum lubricants. Bio-lubricants are commonly synthesized by modifying the chemical structure of vegetable oils. In this study, microwave irradiation was applied to intensify the mass-transfer-limited transesterification reaction to produce trimethylolpropane triester (bio-lubricant) from camelina oil as a promising local energy crop. A rotatable RSM-BBD method was applied to find the optimal levels of experimental factors, namely reaction time (67.8 min), the catalyst concentration (1.4 wt%) and the molar ratio (3.5). In these optimal levels, the reaction yield of 94.3% was obtained with desirability of 0.975. The quadratic statistical model with a determination coefficient of 97.97%, a standard deviation of 0.91 and a variation coefficient of 1% was suggested as the most appropriate model by Design-Expert software. Finally, the physicochemical properties of the purified product were in accordance with the requirements of the ISO-VG22 base oil standard.

Project description:Digitally-enhanced technologies are set to transform every aspect of manufacturing. Networks of sensors that compute at the edge (streamlining information flow from devices and providing real-time local data analysis), and emerging Cloud Finite Element Analysis technologies yield data at unprecedented scales, both in terms of volume and precision, providing information on complex processes and systems that had previously been impractical. Cloud Finite Element Analysis technologies enable proactive data collection in a supply chain of, for example the metal forming industry, throughout the life cycle of a product or process, which presents revolutionary opportunities for the development and evaluation of digitally-enhanced lubricants, which requires a coherent research agenda involving the merging of tribological knowledge, manufacturing and data science. In the present study, data obtained from a vast number of experimentally verified finite element simulation results is used for a metal forming process to develop a digitally-enhanced lubricant evaluation approach, by precisely representing the tribological boundary conditions at the workpiece/tooling interface, i.e., complex loading conditions of contact pressures, sliding speeds and temperatures. The presented approach combines the implementation of digital characteristics of the target forming process, data-guided lubricant testing and mechanism-based accurate theoretical modelling, enabling the development of data-centric lubricant limit diagrams and intuitive and quantitative evaluation of the lubricant performance.

Project description:Self-crosslinking of Tannic acid (TA) was accomplished to obtain poly(tannic acid) (p(TA)) particles in single step, surfactant free media using sodium periodate (NaIO4) as an oxidizing agent. Almost monodisperse p(TA) particles with 981 ± 76 nm sizes and -22 ± 4 mV zeta potential value with ellipsoidal shape was obtained. Only slight degradation of p(TA) particles with 6.8 ± 0.2% was observed at pH 7.4 in PBS up to 15 days because of the irreversible covalent formation between TA units, suggesting that hydrolytic degradation is independent from the used amounts of oxidation agents. p(TA) particles were found to be non-hemolytic up to 0.5 mg/mL concentration and found not to affect blood clotting mechanism up to 2 mg/mL concentration. Antioxidant activity of p(TA) particles was investigated by total phenol content (TPC), ferric reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP), trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), total flavanoid content (TFC), and Fe (II) chelating activity. p(TA) particles showed strong antioxidant capability in comparison to TA molecules, except FRAP assay. The antibacterial activity of p(TA) particles was investigated by micro-dilution technique on E. coli as Gram‑negative and S. aureus as Gram-positive bacteria and found that p(TA) particles are more effective on S. aureus with over 50% inhibition at 20 mg/mL concentration attained.

Project description:Nucleic acid amphiphiles, referring to nucleic acids modified with large hydrophobic groups, have been widely used in programmable bioengineering. Since nucleic acids are intrinsically hydrophilic, the hydrophobic groups endow nucleic acid amphiphiles with unique properties, such as self-assembling, interactions with artificial or biological membranes, and transmembrane transport. Importantly, the hybridization or target binding capability of oligonucleotide itself supplies nucleic acid amphiphiles with excellent programmability. As a result, this type of molecule has attracted considerable attention in academic studies and has enormous potential for further applications. For a comprehensive understanding of nucleic acid amphiphiles, we review the reported research on nucleic acid amphiphiles from their molecular design to final applications, in which we summarize the synthetic strategies for nucleic acid amphiphiles and draw much attention to their unique properties in different contexts. Finally, a summary of the applications of nucleic acid amphiphiles in drug development, bioengineering, and bioanalysis are critically discussed.

Project description:The construction of covalent organic frameworks with special geometery and optical properties is of high interest, due to their unique physicochemical and biological properties. In this work, we report on a new method for the construction of triazine frameworks with defined topologies using coordination chemistry. Ball milling and wet chemical reactions between cyanuric chloride and melamine were directed in spatial arrangements and opposite optical activity. Cobalt was used as a directing agent to drive reactions into special morphologies, optical properties and biological activity. The enantiorecognition ability of triazine frameworks that was manifested in their activities against bacteria, demonstrated a new way for the construction of materials with specific interactions at biointerfaces.

Project description:Gelatin (G) was extracted from the skin of Atlantic cod at different pH of the aqueous phase (pH 3, 4, 5, 8 and 9) and at a temperature of 50 ± 1 °C. The yield of gelatin (G3, G4, G5, G8, and G9, respectively) was 49-55% of the dry raw material. The influence of extraction pH on the physicochemical and functional properties of gelatin was studied. Sample G5 was characterized by higher protein content (92.8%) while lower protein content was obtained for sample G3 (86.5%) extracted under more aggressive conditions. Analysis of the molecular weight distribution showed the presence of α- and β-chains as major components; the molecular weight of the samples ranged between 130 and 150 kDa, with sample G5 having the highest molecular weight. IR spectra of all samples had absorption bands characteristic of fish gelatin. The study of the secondary structure demonstrated higher amounts of ordered triple collagen-like helices for G5 extracted under mild conditions. Accordingly, sample G5 formed gels with high values for the storage modulus and gelling and melting temperatures, which decrease as pH changes into acidic or alkaline regions. In addition, the differential scanning calorimetry data showed that G5 had a higher glass transition temperature and melting enthalpy. Thus, cod skin is an excellent source of gelatin with the necessary physicochemical and functional properties, depending on the appropriate choice of aqueous phase pH for the extraction.
