Doctoral Studies as part of an Innovative Training Network (ITN): Early Stage Researcher (ESR) experiences.

ABSTRACT: Background: The Marie-Skłodowska-Curie Actions' (MSCA) Innovative Training Network (ITN) is a doctoral training programme jointly implemented by academic institutions and industries from countries across Europe and beyond. To our knowledge no study has examined the experience of students participating in MSCA-ITNs. This study aims to evaluate and report MSCA-ITN Early Stage Researcher (ESR) experiences. Methods: The Innovative Training Network - Evaluation Questionnaire (ITN-EQ) was developed to assess supervision, training, collaborations and experiences of ESRs and forwarded to two tinnitus-related ITNs and seven ITNs of other disciplines. Results: Key advantages identified included better career prospects, multidisciplinary research opportunities/collaborations, international exposure, personal/professional development, plus generous salaries and research budgets. However, lack of a common EU framework resulted in the experience being largely dependent on the host institution, country and supervisor. Moreover, managing the dual requirements of ITNs and host institutions while completing a three-year PhD seemed challenging for most ESRs. ESR involvement in workshop and training school planning was desirable. More than 80% of ESRs rated the overall ITN experience favourably and 98.3% would recommend the same to prospective PhD students. Conclusions: This report could provide valuable insights in planning and management of future ITNs and could assist prospective students in their decision of joining an ITN for their PhD.

Project description:BackgroundThe Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) aims to transform higher education in Africa. One of its main thrusts is supporting promising university faculty (fellows) to obtain high quality doctoral training. CARTA offers fellows robust support which includes funding of their attendance at Joint Advanced Seminars (JASes) throughout the doctoral training period. An evaluation is critical in improving program outcomes. In this study; we, CARTA fellows who attended the fourth JAS in 2018, appraised the CARTA program from our perspective, specifically focusing on the organization of the program and its influence on the fellows' individual and institutional development.MethodsExploratory Qualitative Study Design was used and data was obtained from three focus group discussions among the fellows in March 2018. The data were analyzed using thematic approach within the framework of good practice elements in doctoral training-Formal Research Training, Activities Driven by Doctoral Candidates, Career Development as well as Concepts and Structures.ResultsIn all, 21 fellows from six African countries participated and all had been in the CARTA program for at least three years. The fellowship has increased fellows research skills and expanded our research capacities. This tremendously improved the quality of our doctoral research and it was also evident in our research outputs, including the number of peer-reviewed publications. The CARTA experience inculcated a multidisciplinary approach to our research and enabled significant improvement in our organizational, teaching, and leadership skills. All these were achieved through the well-organized structures of CARTA and these have transformed us to change agents who are already taking on research and administrative responsibilities in our various home institutions. Unfortunately, during the long break between the second and the third JAS, there was a gap in communication between CARTA and her fellows, which resulted in some transient loss of focus by a few fellows.ConclusionThe CARTA model which builds the research capacity of doctoral fellows through robust support, including intermittent strategic Joint Advanced Seminars has had effective and transformative impacts on our doctoral odyssey. However, there is a need to maintain the momentum through continuous communication between CARTA and the fellows all through this journey.

Project description:BackgroundWhile falls are the leading cause of accidental injury among older people, the current fall prevention strategies have not resulted in a remarkable reduction in fall rates. An alternative novel approach, teaching older adults how to fall safely to prevent injury, has been recently implemented in the FAlling Safely Training (FAST) trial. The current study aimed to explore the views and perceptions of older people about their participation in the safe-falling training program.MethodsFocus groups were conducted with eight community-dwelling older adults (age range: 66 to 76 years, five females) at risk of falling who completed the FAST program. Two focus groups involving four participants each were conducted. Recordings were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using thematic analysis.ResultsThree themes were identified following the analysis: (1) Before the training; with subthemes: Previous fall prevention strategies and Motivation to participate. Motivations to take part in the training included worries about falling, an awareness of an increased risk of falling, and a desire to decrease the chances of sustaining an injury. (2) Training itself; with subthemes: General impressions of the training and Learning the techniques. Older people highlighted that the training was well-designed and executed. (3) Going forward; with subthemes: Training increased confidence, Incorporating in a community setting, and Proposing improvements to the study. It was reported that the training enhanced participants' confidence about falling without injury. Incorporating the training into a community context was discussed, and suggestions for program enhancements were made. The individual nature of the training was valued, but participants also provided suggestions for how they would see the program taking place successfully in small groups.ConclusionsThe results indicated that the safe-falling training was acceptable to older adults. The perceived ability to fall without injury was reported to have increased. Individuals who experienced a fall after the training ended reported being able to use the techniques learned in their daily life.
